Mikel went to the Science Lab with Rhoades. He however had decided that Rhoades would have to be the lead on the XO’s little project.

“By all means. Take the lead. You are after all a scientist I presume?” Petrov chided the CSO.

“Oh good,” Duncan replied as the doors to the lab slid open to admit the two of them, “you can identify colours and associate them with roles. I suppose that helps in Engineering at times as well.” The CSO’s tone was level and polite in the annoying way that English accented sarcasm tended to be. The man for all appearances was calm and collected as the box with the car inside it was placed on one of the benches. “This car was previously examined by Engineering and found to be normal, correct? Nothing at all was found to raise any eyebrows?”

Lt Rhodes, CSO

“Other than the obvious and why it was inside a box with a low level containment field.” Nothing more than the composite material it was designed from. We did a molecular scan with nothing.” Petrov answered ignoring or missing the snide English remark.

Since the CSO was experiencing bandwidth lag and was frozen in place like a bad Zoom meeting the CE took control of the box and placed it on the advanced molecular scanner in the science lab. He then began a scan and waited for the results.

Petrov CE

The molecular scanner indicated that the device was a toy, though it’s power signature was unusually high for a toy of its size. It seemed to have several microchips indicating that it possibly had a computer, but it seemed unusual… again, for a toy of that size, to have such a high processing computer. There were indications it had a receiver for remote operation. Then something weird happened, before the molecular scanner could complete its scan, the device shutoff completely. It was drained out of all power.

=^=Computer scan for an access port or virtual connection access to this device. Also confirm the power level of this device and see if it is the source of why the molecular scanner is out of power or shutdown? Do so by remote access and offline. If you detect an attempt to access power from your network disconnect immediately=^=

Petrov was sure this device, because it was not really a toy, was behind power failures. Even though his initial research indicated it was not.

Petrov CE

“No access port or virtual connection access has been discovered. Power levels for indicated object has increased by approximately 250 kilowatts (OOC: making this number up based on an actual MRI device). Unknown if object is responsible for molecular scanner failure,” chirpped the computer.

The power increase was only half of the power loss from the molecular scanner.

=/\= Computer, also scan for any correlation between loss of power in the molecular scanner and corresponding power increase in the device. =/\= Duncan looked at Petrov, “I think we can assume without much further testing that the device is the cause of the power disruptions, but why? Is it absorbing our power or creating its own leading to the disruptions?”

“There is a 56.58% probability that object is related to the power loss in molecular scanner. Method of power transfer is unknown. Method of power increase is unknown,” replied the computer.

“When in doubt open it up.” Petrov said. “Or blow it up. Jettison it into space and target it. Why are we overthinking this?”

Petrov CE

“Please re-clarify inquiry,” chirped the computer back at Petrov.

GM

Since the CSO did not seem to take an action Petrov did.

“What do you have in here that we can isolate it, and cut it open with a laser? Keeping in mind to lock onto it and beam it out if we think its going to blow.” He asked and told the CSO.
