Alita guided Remy to one of the comfortable long couches in the front room as Donnie made his way further into the kitchen. As Alita sat down she patted the cushion next to her and smiled at Remy.

“You’re doing fine. I’m so glad you decided to come. I would have understood if you decided not to.” she said in a whisper.

As Alita finished speaking she began to hear light foot falls on the floor above them and two sets of foot steps on the stairs above them. The two older women passed through the kitchen and out into the living room. The taller one was a dark haired Betazoid with a kind face and a sprinkling of gray at the temples. She looked at Alita and Remy critically before smiling and making her way to a comfortable chair next to the recliner.

The other woman was a slight blonde with heavy streaks of gray and intelligent green eyes, the same lovely shade as Alita’s and Bre’s. She made her way around the low coffee table and hugged Alita tightly.

The same green, Remy realized. For a moment, the woman’s advanced age slipped away and Bre appeared before hm. The night from long ago and Remy almost spoke her name.

“Oh I’m so glad you’ve come home. None of us get together like we should anymore. Space is too big.” she said.

As Alita returned Anna’s hug she could tell the older woman had lost some weight and would have to speak with Liza later.

“I’m glad to be home too. Although I can really only stay a few days it would really be a crime to come to Earth and not see you.”

Alita smiled and turned slightly.

“Professor Anna Jameson, I’d like to introduce Remy.”

Remy smiled, bowed and began to speak, “It is a pleas----“

Alita took in a breath as if to finish the introduction but was interrupted by Anna who had stood straight up and looked the newcomer in the eyes.

“Oh I know exactly who you are. Who else would my sweet grand daughter bring to this house but her fiance?” she asked happily.

  • Alita/Anna/Donnie

His smile dropped for just a moment and then turned into a laugh, a somewhat nervous laugh, at that. Remy began to protest when Alita cut him off. “Actually, I am–“

Boudreaux (CO)

As Anna uttered those words Alita’s heart sank realizing just how eccentric her grandmother was becoming. Luckily Liza came to the rescue.

Remy was about to correct her, but not knowing what the consequences might be, decided to remain silent, and only smiled.

“You’re so perceptive today. What would make you think that dear Anna?” Liza said.

Alita could see the pleading look in Liza’s eyes and decided to wait before interrupting.

“It’s the way they look sitting there on that couch together.” Anna said. Anna seemed to look at them again as if seeing them for the first time.

“Well Remy, I guess she’s found us out. I’m sorry we didn’t tell you earlier. Some things need to be done in person. You see, we’ll only be here a few days and then we’re going to New Orleans.” Alita said.

As Alita explained this, she made herself sit back in the couch and relax.

  • Alita

Hoping it didn’t get too weird, Remy put his arm around Alita and pulled her close to play along.

“Oui, my family is from de bayou country. Dis is de first time we ‘ave been to Earth sine we . . . . became a couple. So we wanted to do dis de right way, in person. Isn’ dat right, cher?”

He turned and stared into Alita’s eyes. Might as well make it believable, he thought. Hopefully, no would draw any conclusion on the resemblance between he and Donnie.

Boudreaux (CO)

Alita sighed gratefully which might have been taken as a loving reaction to Remy’s words. Smiling, she returned his gaze.

“It just seemed like the right thing to do. We haven’t even actually told Donnie yet.” she explained.

The room was silent for several seconds as Anna looked form one to the other, a serene smile on her face. Liza hadn’t seen her that pleased in months. They could hear Donnie coming from the kitchen with a full service of coffee.

“What haven’t you told me yet sis?” he asked setting everything down on the table.

“Oh Donnie, pour your brother in law a cup of coffee.” Anna interrupted.

For Donnie’s part, he hid his surprise well but Alita noticed it and she had a hunch Remy might also. Leaning forward, she moved to our her, and her fiance, large cups from the pot.

“Wow sissy, that’s great. I… I think this calls for something special.” Donnie said, “Grand-mère, would you please help your fumble fingered grandson in the kitchen?”

His word were directed at Anna but he managed to shoot a quick wink at Alita before Anna turned to walk with him.

Once Liza was certain they had left the room she moved tot he other side of the couch and brought a small ottoman over so she could sit close and they could speak quietly.

“Thank you Captain Boudreaux and I am so sorry to put you on the spot like that. Anna knows who you are, at least she did a few weeks ago. She hasn’t been the same since visiting her husband’s grave this spring. I think she wants to see everyone else with the love and life she lost. That’s why she’s so mad at Alita’s parents for divorcing even though she accepted it three years ago.” Liza paused for a few seconds to collect her thoughts, “I may have to see if S’Vol could come from Vulcan. I can’t put up a block the way a Vulcan can but, you know they’ve never really gotten along. She says he reminds her of her mother.”

bump

Remy breathed a sigh of relief. “So, she knows who I am, but does she really know WHO I am?” His gaze shifted to Alita, looking for help or clarification. “Dere is more to dis, dan a CO an’ ‘is security chief.”

Boudreaux (CO)

Liza took a slow look between Remy and Alita.

“Yes, I’m sure there is more to this than a good Captain and his lovely Security Chief but, who you are beyond that might not be any concern of mine unless it affects Anna’s health.” Liza looked again from one to the other stopping on Alita, “Child, I will speak with you alone before we leave.”

That remark caught Alita by surprise. She had known Liza most of her life and considered her to be almost a second grandmother. But maybe Liza was pi9cking up on more things than Alita had said.

“Honestly Liza, I brought Remy here because I wanted him to meet Anna before…” she paused, “Well I’m not certain what comes next but, I don’t even know if I can follow through now…”

Alita would have continued to explain but sounds could be heard coming from the kitchen door. Donnie and Anna would be back any second. Liza quickly stood and moved back to where she had been sitting before. Alita settled back into the couch trying to return to her calm demeanor.

The kitchen door swung open easily for Donnie and Anna as they walked to the table, Anna stopped and looked straight at Remy as if the fragile woman had seen a ghost.

“No, no. This is wrong. Who the hell are you?” Anna asked with surprising strength.

  • Alita/Liza/Anna/Donnie

Remy stood up and raised his hands in an open gesture. He wasn’t sure how to continue. Alita’s fiancee? Her captain? Anna’s grandfather??? Best to keep it as neutral as possible, he thought.

“Pardon, mam’selle. I am Remy. . . Boudreaux. I serve in Starfleet, on de USS Wolverine. . . .wit’ Alita.”

As badly as he wanted to meet his granddaughter, he was beginning to wonder if this was such a good idea. Anna was obviously, in a very fragile state. The last thing he wanted to do was send her over the edge.

Boudrreaux (CO)

Anna stopped and seemed to look far away for several long seconds. Liza, Alita, and Donnie had seen her do this before. It was a Vulcan centering technique that S’Val had taught her years ago but she seemed to be trying extra hard this time.

Sighing, she shook herself out of it and smiled at them.

“Oh my dears, I am sorry. You probably think I’ve lost it completely this time but no, not quite yet. It’s true I have a hard time with things. My memories get all jumbled and some of them are just so painful.” Anna paused for a few seconds looking from Donnie to Remy trying to make some connection

“There’s still just some things I don’t understand. Donnie, get me the large ring of keys from the case in the back bedroom.” Anna kindly commanded her grandson.

“Gran, I thought those were just for show.” Donnie said in passing as he left to fetch the keys.

Anna shook her head as he left.

“Alita dear, I think it’s time we go to the red room. There’s something there I think everybody needs to see, especially you Mister Remy.” she finished with a kind smile.

  • ALita/Anna/Liza/Donnie

He watched the goings on in silence. Anna seemed to have recovered fine, but he still was unsure if he should say anything as of yet. He noticed the look she gave him and Donnie as it almost seemed she had made the connection. Her last comment almost had him convinced that she knew. The uncertainty was driving him crazy. Did she know? Did she recognize him?

He wanted desperately to reach out and give Anna a hug. Tell her he was sorry. Sorry for what? That he hadn’t been there for her as a grandfather should. Sorry that he had missed watching her grow up? Sorry that he wasn’t there for her mother. Sorry that she hadn’t gotten the chance to know and love her real father?

Remy knew that it was impossible for him to have known about this side of his family, but the guilt was still there. Maybe he should’ve looked further into Bre’s record and saw that she had had children after their brief encounter. Even then, would he have been able to put two and two together. Would any of them have believed him.? The record of the Merrimacks trip to the future was highly classified. He wondered if Bre had ever mentioned to any of them what happened between.

So many questions were swirling around in his head at this moment, he was having a hard time keeping them straight. For a man that had spent a lifetime doing things under the table, doing Section 31’s dirty work, Remy was feeling more pressure than ever for the first time in his life.

Boudreaux (normally Capt. Cool)

Alita could sense Remy’s swirling emotions. Stepping close to him she smiled and put her hand on his, they were family after all, and it just seemed to be the right thing to do.

Feeling Alita’s touch was reassuring to say the least. He hadn’t realized he was holding his breath, but with Alita’s hand now firmly on his, he slowly exhaled.

By then, Donnie had come back with the keys and handed them to Anna.

“Do you know which one you’re looking for? I could never find the keys to that room Gran.” Donnie said.

Anna took the keys and fumbled with them for a few seconds before picking one out of the dozen or so that was there.

“Yes Donnie, this one. I know, it looks quite similar to all the rest but that all right. Now, who’s coming with me?” Anna asked cheerily.

Liza had resigned herself to going with Anna. The caregiver was terribly worried about Anna’s state of mind but sensed clarity in Anna that she hadn’t noted for quite some time.

“I don’t think I’d miss this for the world Grandmother.” Alita said.

Donnie merely nodded and rummaged in a cabinet tucking a small flask in his back pocket.

  • Alita/Anna/Liza/Donnie

Remy stood up slowly, for fear of losing his balance and falling back onto the couch. When he was sure he was stable, he raised his hands in supplication and said, “I assume I am invited as well?”

Boudreaux (CO)

Anna half turned and looked at Remy again.

“You have to come. I think you may be the only one that will understand exactly what I think I’m showing you.”

With that, Anna turned and slowly made her way through the house.

Into the large kitchen and down a short hallway where they came to an old staircase. Anna stopped and put her hand on it.

“I know this looks older than me but we do use it quite often. It has been refurbished, not replaced.”

With that, she motioned that everybody should go up before her.

As Alita approached, she gave her grandmother a questioning look.

“Why don’t you want to go up first Gran?” Alita asked.

“I am slow my dears and I will take my time if I need to. Perhaps one of these fine young men will offer to assist me.” she said feeling rather chipper.

Liza had the strong sense that Anna was enjoying this moment but couldn’t quite understand why.
