Noah fidgeted quietly in his seat as the transport shuttle dropped out of warp in the Risa system. A mixture of excitement and nerves kept the young man from sitting still, prompting a smirk from several other passengers and a glance back from the pilot. Noticing the attention he was attracting brought a flush of red to the young man’s pale complexion, which stood out in stark contrast to his dark hair and deep green eyes.“Something wrong with your seat, Ensign?” the officer asked, not bothering to hide his annoyance.
“Uh no sir, I’m sorry,” Noah responded, sitting on his hands in an attempt to keep the peace for the rest of the trip.
The pilot muttered something under his breath about running a space day care and quickly brought the shuttle into orbit around the planet within range of the Wolverine. He checked a few controls and then gestured silently toward the shuttle’s small transport platform. “Time to go Ensign, sounds like you’re in for some excitement over there.”
Noah grabbed his small travel bag and stepped up onto the pad. He flashed a bright smile toward the pilot and was just opening his mouth to thank him when the environment dematerialized around him, and just like that he found himself standing in the transporter room on the Wolverine. Shaking off a bit of disorientation at the abrupt transport, he stepped down from the transporter platform and nodded to the chief as he headed out into the corridor.
There definitely seemed to be a bit of a buzz about the ship as he made his way quickly toward his assigned quarters. He had already memorized the layout of the small ship and had probably checked his assignment details a million times on the trip over. Arriving at his assigned lodging, and not wanting to waste any time, he thumbed the door open, threw his bag on the bunk and rushed off to sickbay.
Several moments later the young doctor found himself arriving at the place where he would be spending much of his time. He stopped short of the doors to sickbay and took a moment to collect himself. Taking a few deep, calming breaths he glanced down at his uniform checking for any stains or embarrassing wrinkles. He definitely wanted to make a great first impression. With one final smoothing motion with his hands along the front of his uniform he stepped forward and through the doors of sickbay. A smile slowly crept onto his face as he took in the sounds and sights of the department and much of the anxiety he had been feeling faded away. Noah stepped forward toward the middle of the department and quietly waited to be acknowledged by one of the staff.

A nurse wearing medical blues stepped from the storage room, arms full of supplies. She looked up and was startled to see a crew member standing there. She juggled the containers and tried desparately to regain control of them.
“Oh,” she began, “I didn’t know anybody was still here. I thought everyone had left for leave by now.”
NE Nurse Forman (nurse)
Noah jumped forward to help the nurse with her supplies, grabbing a few to keep the pile from toppling to the ground.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said with a reassuring smile, “I actually just arrived on board. I’m Ensign Astor and it’s my first day… first day anywhere actually. I was hoping to get my boarding physical out of the way and check in with the CMO. I’m gathering that she must have gone down to the surface with everyone else?”
He arranged the supplies that he had taken from the nurse and waited for further direction to see where wanted him to put them.
“By the way, it seemed like something was going on when I beamed aboard. Is it just shore leave people are excited about?”

“Hello,” Lily said seemingly out of nowhere strolling in with a smile. “Sorry I am late. Your Noah right? I knew a Noah once. Met him on Altaire VI,” Lily extended her hand. “I am Lily Locksley. Welcome to the Wolverine. I am a new arrival myself. Wanna grab a cup of coffee come into my office? It’s so much more comfortable and then after we can do your medical check in,” she suggested with a smile.

“Yes ma’am,” Noah replied, accepting her hand shake. “I suppose there are a few Noahs roaming about the galaxy. I have to admit I haven’t done much roaming myself. My family tended to stay close to home on Earth, so I’m fairly excited to be here.”
“I haven’t seen home in years,” Lily laughed. It was a full-bodied one that shook her body. “I mean yeah I have popped in and out a few times for the holidays and visit but as to staying long enough to get main that is a noooooo,” she drew out her words. “But before you ask,” she held up a finger. “One, I love my family. Typically that is the reason people avoid home but we are close. Two,” she held up a second finger, “is because I have a huge bucket list so I had to start now to even have a hope of doing most of it. Now let’s get that coffee huh,” she made a circular motion for him to follow her.
He wondered briefly about some of the rumors he had heard about the Wolverine and how a sickbay staffed with Ensign medical officers would meet those challenges. On the other hand, perhaps nobody else wanted the positions.
“Coffee sounds great,” he returned a polite smile. “It was a long trip over here and our pilot was exactly an expert in hospitality.”

“Yeah Starfleet can be so rule-oriented,” she moved to the replicator and got two cups of coffee. She also replicated cream and sugar. It was always easier to have someone put it in the way they liked it than just assume it was right. “I just recently joined up. It is way different than I thought. So where do you want to roam. If we could move this ship to the first stop on your bucket list what would it be,” she took a sip of her coffee as she sat down behind the desk.

Noah gratefully reached for the other cup of coffee. He added a small amount of cream and two lumps worth of sugar and then took a very satisfying sip, barely stifling the urge to let out a sigh of relief. Since the shuttle had dropped him off he had been running on pure adrenaline and hadn’t noticed how low on energy he had become. Of course the coffee wasn’t really fixing the underlying issue but it would get him through the rest of the day.
Looking back at his new boss he briefly pondered her question. “I’m actually not really sure. The goal has always been to just get through the Academy and onto a ship. At the risk of sounding like an inspirational quote I think so far it has been much more about the journey than the destination. But… I guess it might be interesting to visit Betazed and live there for awhile. Telepathic races fascinate me and it would definitely be something to experience living among a whole world where everything is so open.”

“People might run in terror if they could see into my head,” Lily laughed, “and I might be equally scared of scaring them off if they got a peek of my inner musings.” Taking a long sip of her coffee she thought about what Astor had said. “Besides I had a Betazed boyfriend once and I swear I gave him an anxiety complex. I am not sure if he was reading my mind, reading my emotions, or just darn good at reading body language but it got to the point when we were planning dates he would pepper me with questions like does it involved heights, death, bodily injury, or possible jail time.” Shaking her head she rolled her eyes with a happy expression. “He was a great guy but I think I was more adventurous than him. After me, he settled down with a librarian.”

Noah chuckled at her story as he continued with his coffee, noticing that he had been drinking it a little faster than normal. He decided to slow down before heart palpitations added to the underlying excitement of his situation.
“I’ve only met one Betazoid that I’m aware of. It was a joint project in the Academy with a group of psych students. He was polite enough, I suppose, but he insisted on assembling the presentation himself. The rest of us didn’t do much talking, he would just go along nodding his head and writing down things as he picked up on them. I thought it was pretty hilarious, as we all just stared at each other. Hope he made it through,” he sighed with another sip of coffee. “So… jail time? Is there a story behind that?”
