It was somewhere in the dead of night. Alita had tried meditating several times. She’d listened to river sounds that reminded her of home and burned a pretty smelling candle one of her cousins on the Genesis had given her, but her mind wouldn’t rest, so she decided to do the one thing that always calmed her.

Getting up, Alita walked to the area that she had designated for cooking and began laying out utensils and cooking supplies. It was going to be one of these nights.

Due to the heat of her ancient oven, she was cooking with her quarter’s door cracked open tonight the smells of cooking drifted through the corridors.

-Alita

Bump

Celador was out for a walk, He wasn’t happy about it but, after spending most of the last 20 years sleeping out of boredom while in prison, he didn’t like to sleep much. It was also the start of his off day and he was feeling very restless. So he decided to go walk the ship. For the last 45 minutes, he had been walking the decks, using the jefferies tubes to go between decks instead of the turbolift.

As he rounded a corner he thought he smelled something good. As he followed his nose to realized it lead to his bosses quarters.

‘She must be be having a rough night too, or could be a date.’ Celador thought as they approached her quarters.

‘Lets find out.’ Squared replied thoughtfully.

Celador saw a crack in the door and knocked.

-Cel

Alita set a platter down and glanced at her door.

“It’s open.” she said willing to share the night with any other night owls out.

Alita

Celador opened the door fully and walked in. “Good Evening, err morning LT, Not sure anymore. I was just out for a walk saw that your door was open and the smell of good food.”

-Cel

Alita was a little surprised to see Cel. Perhaps the ship was full of insomniacs. As she spoke, she placed a large cast iron skillet on a cutting board and slowly slipped a spatula between the rim of the skillet and a large round fluffy looking loaf of bread.

“Well I’m on option three of my ‘Let’s get some sleep.’ plan. As you can tell, it’s not working. Please, sit down, have a seat.”

“Thank you.” Cel replied, taking a seat.

Pausing, she looked down and placed her hand on top of the steaming loaf, slowly slipping the spatula beneath it, bringing it out of the skillet, and setting it on the platter. Alita smiled in satisfaction.

Now that was well seasoned cast iron. she thought.

Taking a sharp knife, she began cutting the bread into wedges.

“When I can’t sleep, I cook. If that doesn’t work, I drink. I don’t feel like drinking tonight. So how’s life aboard the Wolverine been treating you?” she asked conversationally.

Alita

“It been interesting, adjusting. Some of the younger crewmen are confused and concerned when they look at a 40+ year old ensign. Especially one who spent 20 years in prison.” He said, matter of factly. “What are you cooking?” He asked her, trying to get a look at what she was cooking.

-Cel

Alita had finished cutting the fluffy bread in wedges.

“I think there’s a name for it in one of Earth’s old romantic languages but we always just called it onion bread. Do you prefer butter or honey?” she asked.

Laying a wedge on the plate she turned her back to Cel to retrieve a butter dish and honey bowl.

-Alita

“Honey, thank you. So why can’t you sleep, anything on your mind?” He asked her, grabbing a piece of bread.

-Cel

Alita brought the honey and butter to the table, split a piece of bread, and slathered it with butter.

“I am just a restless soul. I used to think it was because my twin and I are quite far apart but I’m certain that’s not the reason anymore. I spend a lot of time going over the day’s events and just sifting through things in my own way. You know, I wouldn’t be overly concerned about what some of the younger NEs think. On a ship like this, I think we all find something to appreciate about the other person, even if you might not get along with them.” she said with a slight frown.

Alita

“Not getting along with someone yourself?” He asked, taking a slice of bread and spreading some honey on it.

-Cel

Alita wasn’t one to gossip and wondered if her issues regarding Petrov were worth discussing at all.

“Well it’s like this, I actually respect and admire someone because of their blind devotion to their job, but that also makes them incredibly hard to get along with. So I had to ask myself, do I feel like playing nice or should I just let it go? I’m actually still wrestling with that decision. As long as I don’t have to raise my voice on the bridge again, I’m just going to call it life.” she said finally sitting down to relax.

Alita

Celador nodded in understanding. He didn’t know who she was talking about, but given the small ship it wouldn’t take long to figure out either.

“Personality conflicts can be hard. I really can’t say much though. I’m still trying to remember how to socialize. Large groups of people still make me uncomfortable. Makes me glad this is a small ship. ” He took a bite of his onion bread.

“Honestly, I’ve been avoiding people where ever I can. That’s why I was out walking in the middle of the night, less people out and about.”

-Cel

The texture of the bread was light and fluffy yet still managed to hold it’s shape. Due to the flour Alita had used it had an underlying nutty quality. The original recipe called for one type of onion, whatever was on hand, but Alita had managed to alter the recipe and this loaf contained three different types of onions.

“Yes, I can understand how socializing might be a challenge for you at the moment but I think you’re doing rather well. Just take it one conversation at a time and don’t be afraid to walk away from something if it makes you uncomfortable.” Alita paused and poured them some tea, “Why do you think I cook after all. Sometimes I’m not that good at expressing myself but, you’ll remember this onion bread a few days from now.” she explained.

Alita

Celador smiled, “Yes I will, this bread is great, I’m loving it.” He took another bite. “I’ve been meaning to ask, what kind of hobbies do you have? Besides cooking I mean.” He asked curiously.

-Cel

Alita laughed and set the bread aside.

“I haven’t had much time for them lately but I enjoy holodeck programming and I started guitar lessons about two weeks before I was assigned to the wolverine. I’ll get back to them someday I guess. Have you found any interests lately?” Alita asked a bit awkwardly. She knew where Cel had been the last twenty years and he didn’t need to be reminded by his boss.

Alita

“I’ve recently started a holodeck program for my model train hobby. It will be a never ending work in progress.” He said, leaning back in his chair. “But, what I’ve always wanted to do and” he laughed a little bit at the thought. “I have always wanted to learn how to play the drums. Now that I don’t have any serious responsibilities, maybe I can take up drum lessons.” He looked at her and smiled.

“What do you think, should we start a band?”

-Cel

Alita was glad to see Cel smile.

“Maybe after I’ve had about twenty more guitar lessons I might just take you up on that.”

Rising, she turned and moved her cast iron onto a small counter. Turning a large ball of dough into it, she shaped it right there in the pan and sprinkled on more onions. Then she set it in the oven which was still hot from last use.

Alita

“That’s ok, I need just as many drum lessons. To bad we only have one holodeck. Not sure how my neighbors will appreciate hearing bad drumming through the walls.” He watched Alita get some more dough.

“Where did you learn how to cook? As I understand it, it’s a dying art.” He asked curiously.

-Cel

Alita sat back down.

“It’s something my family’s always done. I guess someone in the not so distant past believed that nutrients derived from replicated food weren’t as beneficial as organics are. I haven’t really put much thought into that theory though. For me yes, it is an art and a form of self expression.”

Alita drank the last of her tea and continued.

“I cook for people that I care about, and members of the crew, because when it comes to really important subjects, sometimes I stumble over my words. I guess this is how I save face.” she said with a laugh.

Alita

Cel smiled, “Why would someone like you need to save face?” he asked curious.
