Wells settled back into a science station, next to the Chief Science Officer, and read the status reports of the ship to get up to speed. She had the computer display the transcript of the Bridge crew since she stepped away. When she was caught up, and especially hearing Mr. Ahearn’s comments, she spoke up, “If I recall correctly, Voyager mission reports did indicate that the Vaadwaur had the ability to maintain the Underspace. The lack of any debris could be a contributing factor why the Underspace appears to be so well preserved.”

“Also it means they are well established here and with home field advantage. The better to not try to fake them out and instead out run them. I trust my engines far more than your suspect drives.” Petrov replied.

Petrov CE

“I would not disagree with that point, given that they are on loan from Starfleet Core of Engineers,” replied Wells.

Alita had noticed Wells’ and Mado’s return and, for once, she had to agree with Petrov. His engines were far more preferable to whatever voodoo Wells was attempting.

Leaning forward, Remy was on the edge of his seat. His gaze kept switching from the scree to Ahearn and back to the screen. He needed to remain in the Underspace as long as possible to gather as much Intel as they could. “If ships can be expelled from de Underspace, we should be able to get out on our own, no? Petrov be prepared to give me warp speed as soon as we are out. ‘Elm, can you plot a course back to our origin point of de Delta Quadrant?”

Boudreaux (CO)

“No sir, I don’t know if I can. We can try to reverse course back the way we came, but I’m uncertain if that will return us to our original point in space,” said the helmsman.

“Captain, from what I can tell, I believe the Vaadwaur think that we’re a large asteroid, and theorizing from the lack of debris, intend to just merely eject us out of the Underspace,” said Wells, “However, if you do perform the suggested action of actually moving through the Underspace, our holographic disguise will be rendered mostly useless… or at least even more curious since we become asteroid with means of propulsion. The only problem is if they do attempt to grapple or use a tractor beam on us, the holographic projection will not hold.”

“I suggest we allow the Vaadwaur to simply eject us from the underspace, Captain.” Bryson called out. “We don’t have the resources to come back from a battle with a Vaadwaur ship.” The XO looked over the ship’s sensors to find an exact time before the Vaadwaur reached them.

XO

“Then we would have to figure out how to make a tractor beam hold through the holographic projection,” remarked Wells.

Mado wondered why the Vaadwuar would need two ships if they were simply working to clear debris. Perhaps they were attending to something else, or perhaps the Wolverine’s disguise fooled no one. Admittedly, the agent knew very little about the Vaadwuar. He wasn’t in a good position to make a suggestion, but if a fight was inevitable, perhaps there was some way they could lay a trap. Something to throw the Vaadwaur off guard just long enough to escape.

Observer or not, he decided to speak up. After all, his life was as much on the line as everyone else’s, “If the ejection fails and we are discovered, perhaps we could set a booby trap… some way to give them a jolt if they attempt to grapple our hull.”

• Lt. Mado (FSA)

Commander Erin shrugged at Mado’s idea. “That could buy us some time, but we’d then need to prepare for a possible Vaadwaur fleet encounter.” The XO stated. The FSA had a good idea, but resources were thin already and they might not have enough supplies to allow for a booby trap.

“Do we know what would happen if something explodes inside of the underspace?” Bryson asked Commander Wells.

“The first encounter of the Underspace by Voyager was marked by battle debris. So, presumably, an explosion within the Underspace might damage it slightly, but only a large massive explosion would cause a collapse. I do have the data of the shield harmonics frequencies used to push Voyager out of the Underspace, which is available on the computer part of our mission files,” said Wells.

Remy carefully weighed to the suggestions from those spoke. “I would prefer to avoid any contact or confronta-SHON wit’ de Vaadwaur if at all possible. . . . .pull up de information on de shield ‘armonics. When we leave de Underspace, I wan’ it to be on our terms. Prepare to adjust de shields.”

Calling back over his should, he asked,” “‘ow goes de data gathering Mr. A’hearn?

Boudreaux (CO)

The science console would read that they gathering 25% more data than Voyager, with better sensors. They were getting a partial map of the Underspace.

“Shield adjustment harmonics ready to activate on your command, Captain” announced Wells, “I do recommend jumping to warp immediately after exiting the Underspace.”

“Engineering is ready to go to maximum warp if that’s what you want.” Petrov answered. It was darn well what he wanted to do.

Petrov CE

Remy’s hands had balled into fists as the tension mounted. Again, it was so very important to get as information as possible. “Acknowledged, Mr. Petroc. Be prepared to jump to warp, on my mark”

“On the plus side, we’ve gathered a lot more data than the previous Starfleet visitors.” Bryson chimed in as he cleared up the ship’s systems so Petrov had more auxiliary power to play with.

“Dat is what I was ‘opine for, Bryson.”

Alita would just be glad to be out of there. Going to maximum warp seemed like an excellent idea.

Mikel was acutely aware he was not the only one who felt that way. Even the COS was agreeing and he was quite sure she would rather jump out the airlock than agree with him.

“‘Elm, as soon as possible, plot a course to Eart’ Engineerine, as soon as de course is confirmed, jump to warp.”

Remy continued to watch the distance get smaller between the Wolverine and Vaadwaur ships. . .closer . . . closer . . .”NOW, activate shield ‘armonics. Let’s go ‘ome!!”

Activating the shield harmonics before the Vaadwaur reached them, the ship was pushed into normal space. A quick determination from the ship’s computer showed they were several sectors away from their original position, practically half way across the Delta Quadrant but nowhere near the Beta Quadrant. Upon immediately exiting, the helmsman laid in a course for Earth as the direction for the ship and engaged maximum warp. As they left the area in post haste, sensors detected the two Vaadwaur ships exiting the Underspace but had no indications that they detected the ship or the supposed asteroid. Thanks to Wells’ quick thinking, she had beamed some replicated asteroid like material in small debris to make it look like the asteroid simply broke apart into tiny pieces. The Wolverine was long out of their sensor range, and there were no signs of pursuit. All that was left was to do a quick analysis of the data to find out if the Underspace exited anywhere near the Beta or Alpha Quadrants.

As soon as the Wolverine jumped to warp and it was confirmed there was no pursuiy, then and olny then, Remy sunk back into his seat and unballed his fists. The captain took a deep breath and looked around the bridge, eyes resting on each crew member in attendance. “Good work, people, but we still ‘ave one mo’ obstacle. . . .gettine back to our time. While we are waitine, let’s analyse de data.”

Boudreaux (CO)

“The calculations for a temporal jump have been already calculated, Captain. Although, the preliminary data we have here is not sufficient to make that Beta Quadrant information that Starfleet wanted, but it looks like it is sufficient enough to detect the Underspace openings. However, staying in the past any longer could damage the timeline further,” said Wells.

“Then what are we waiting for?” Mikel siad shooting a glance at Wells.

Petrov CE

“Unfortunately, the calculation was made with a specific star in the Alpha Quadrant,” said Wells, “Which, we’re nowhere near. With the current power requirements, we can use the experimental drive to get us to that star within a few minutes… or we can attempt to manufacture transwarp coils until we get home, which… might take a couple of weeks.”

“I’m sure Starfleet will be happy with whatever data we bring back at this point.” Commander Bryson stated. “Since our destruction would definitely change the timeline.” The XO was merely stating the obvious, but his attention was more focused on downloading the recent scans into the ship’s archives, then making hard copies in case something was to happen to the Wolverine.

Petrov thought about it.

“Recommend the slower route of creating coils. Safer throwing dice than using the experimental drive, hence its name.” Petrov warned and advised at the same time.

Mikel had a bad feeling others would want the faster path home. Given his mistrust of Well’s he was dubious to say the least of that choice.
