Lieutenant T’Pris entered the Mess Hall with her customary measured stride, her hands folded neatly behind her back. The compartment was neither crowded nor empty, occupied by a scattering of off-duty personnel enjoying meals, conversations, or a brief respite between shifts.

The Mess Hall had been designed to encourage relaxation and social interaction, a concept many species found beneficial during extended deployments. Soft lighting illuminated the space, while several large wall-mounted viewscreens displayed a variety of scenes. One showed a tranquil Vulcan desert sunset, another a forested world with a gently flowing river, and a third cycled through panoramic images of famous Federation landmarks. Near the center of the room, a larger screen displayed the Federation News Service, its anchor delivering the latest reports from across Federation space.

T’Pris paused briefly at the replicator.

“Thai tea. Traditional preparation. Temperature sixty-two degrees Celsius.”

The replicator responded with a familiar hum before materializing a ceramic mug filled with the aromatic beverage. Steam rose gently from its surface, carrying notes of black tea, spices, and sweetened cream. While she generally preferred Vulcan teas, she found the Human beverage’s blend of flavors unexpectedly balanced.

She accepted the mug and turned toward the rear of the Mess Hall.

There, separated somewhat from the primary dining area, was a small lounge-like seating arrangement. A couch faced two upholstered chairs positioned around a low wooden table. Beneath the table rested several storage compartments containing board games and recreational activities frequently used by crew members during off-duty hours.

T’Pris selected one of the chairs and lowered herself into it with controlled precision. Placing her tea upon the table, she briefly observed the assortment of games stored beneath it. Many were based upon strategy and planning, while others appeared to rely heavily upon chance.

The latter remained difficult to justify from a purely logical perspective.

Lifting her mug once more, she took a measured sip before allowing her attention to settle upon the Federation News Service broadcast. The anchor discussed shipping developments along several Federation trade routes while graphics scrolled across the bottom of the screen.

Around her, conversations continued quietly, punctuated occasionally by laughter or the sounds of the replicators in operation. T’Pris simply sat in silence, enjoying the warmth of the tea and the opportunity for uninterrupted contemplation before duty once again demanded her full attention.

“Excuse me,” a quiet little voice squeaked nervously. A young Bajoran Ensign, she was dressed nicely, not quite formal but definitely nicer than her everyday wear “I just saw you sitting there and I was wondering did you want to play a game with me? If-if you don’t that is fine, I just, well um, I was supposed to have a date, but he says he got called into his Security shift early.”

T’Pris turned and looked curiously at the young Bajoran Ensign. “Greetings.” She said as she rose, indicating the seating area. “Please, join me. I am T’Pris.”

“Alice, from Science. I know it’s not a Bajoran name but my Great-Grandmother was human and I’m named after her” NE grinned looking relieved she had someone to talk to, “It’s a pleasure to meet you sir.”

Taking a seat where T’Pris indicated she looked briefly at the games, “Do you play any?”
