Shortly after meeting the Chief Medical Officer Ensign T’Kes went and head back to the turbolift to meet his department head. The turbolift opened up and awaited for his command. “Chief Science Officers office.” The turbolift doors closed. The turbolift took off and headed to the Chief Science Officers office. The doors of the turbolift swung wide open and he stepped off. Once arriving at the office, he stood there and rang the chime.

The chime sounded softly through the office.

Lieutenant T’Pris looked up only briefly from the layered sensor telemetry currently suspended across the LCARS displays built into the curved wall terminal behind her desk. Asteroid density maps, gravimetric variance models, and fragmented spectrographic returns scrolled in organized precision beneath her steady hands. The office itself remained quiet and orderly, illuminated primarily by the cool amber-blue glow of the consoles and the distant muted hum of the Wolverine’s environmental systems.

A single Vulcan meditation lamp burned near the far shelf beside several neatly arranged scientific texts and crystalline mineral samples collected from prior survey assignments. The room carried the restrained simplicity common to Vulcan aesthetics—functional, uncluttered, deliberate.

Evenly, without raising her voice, she said, “Enter.” The doors parted smoothly.

Her eyes settled upon the young Vulcan ensign as he stepped inside. She studied him for a moment in silence, noting the controlled posture, measured movements, and the faint tension that often accompanied newly assigned junior officers reporting aboard a vessel for the first time. Logical.

She rose from behind the desk with composed fluidity, folding her hands neatly behind her back as was her habit.

“Ensign T’Kes,” she said. “You have completed your medical and arrival processing efficiently.”

Though her expression changed little, inwardly she found a small measure of approval in that fact. Efficiency in junior officers often reflected discipline. Discipline could be cultivated into reliability.

“The Wolverine presently faces operational challenges involving degraded sensor performance within a dense metallic asteroid region,” she continued calmly. “Science Department personnel will therefore be expected to adapt quickly, think independently, and maintain analytical precision under imperfect conditions.”

She inclined her head slightly toward the chair opposite her desk.

“You may be seated if you wish.”

Behind her, the main display shifted again as layered scan interference patterns rolled across the screen in red and amber distortions.

“For the moment,” T’Pris said, returning her attention fully to him, “I would prefer to evaluate your specialties directly rather than through personnel summaries alone. Tell me, Ensign… what scientific discipline do you believe is most frequently underestimated aboard a starship?”

The question was delivered without warning, her tone calm and neutral, though the intent behind it was deliberate. Facts could be read in a file. Thought processes could not
