“Doctor, wait,” said an NE Nurse, “Tricorder readings still show the viral-bacterial agent within the Commander’s body.”

“How high is the fever, right now?” She asked, pausing to look at the Nurse. If it got to high, it would begin to impact his brain, and she couldn’t have that.

Dr. Shaidi

“Holding at 41.5, doctor,” said the nurse, “It is having an immediate effect, doctor. Tricorder indicates the bacterial-viral infection agent has dropped by 12% in the Commander’s body.”

Ahearn leaned in and asked “Any particular areas of concentration?”

“No, the body temperature fever is not concentrated in one particular part of the body, sir,” said the NE Nurse.

“Well, that’s promising,” Ayla said softly, wishing they could just give her injection already. But they were right to be cautious since she could have more adverse affects than Erin. “Let’s try to duplicate it, shall we?”

Ahearn thought for a a few moments and watched the readings. His specialty wasn’t biology… or life sciences at all. But he had the knowledge enough to at least try to ‘think outside of the box’, as he dad had always told him when he got stuck on something. Where he did excel was physics, and it was that field that sparked an idea.

“We have a full genetic model of the foreign agent, correct?” and he lifted the PaDD he carried and began running some calculations. “And we have the chemical model?” he asked to add to his previous question. His mind began reviewing the correlation between chemistry and radiation types. “Alpha radiation can’t penetrate cell walls, but is still lethal to biological material if it gets inside the cell wall. We have a medication that is apparently working at getting into the targeted virus. We can add a Alpha radiation generator to the medication, and it would be released internally to the virus. That would destroy the cell in it’s entirety and prevent any mutations allowing it to adapt to the medication. The radioactive isotope would then either be flushed from the patient naturally; or we can simply use the transporter to move them from one spot to another. It will filter out the isotopes automatically.”

“Doctor, tricorder readings show a 100% viral bacterial elimination, though the Commander is dangerously close to brain damage, due to his fever,” said the nurse.

Ahearn looked at the nurse blankly and then said “Not to overstep my bounds Nurse, but don’t you think maybe a chilling blanket might be in order? At least until the Commander can get some NSAIDs introduced?”

“Yes, of course… good idea,” said the nurse, as the nurse fetched a cooling blanket to throw on the Commander. “I’m not a full doctor, so technically, I’m not authorized to dispense medicine unless ordered.”

“All right, with that bugger out of the way, let’s get the Numinol in his system,” Shaidi wasn’t about to let that fever keep climbing, if she could help it. “Unless there are any more objections that are going to get my patient killed.”

Stepping around the nurse, she went to give the man a dose of the numinol tetramidaphin, knowing the NSAID was capable of treating fevers.. but she could only hope it would have an impact on the Commander’s.

Meanwhile, Ayla had simply closed her eyes and let her mind go elsewhere as the virus continued to make her feel terrible. Instead of in Sickbay, she was on a beach somewhere warm, with pink sand and a large umbrella providing shade over her lounge chair. A book rested open and face down beside her, ready for her to continue delving into its depths. But for now her eyes were happily fixed on the waves crashing onto the beach, providing happy white noise from anything that might distract her fro her peace.

Ahearn watched the scanners as they continued to display the vital signs of those infected. Finally, after a few minutes, he spoke. “Dr. Shaidi, I’d like a blood sample from each patient. that has received the medication. I want to see if we can detect any immunological response. If we can trigger a response, we may be able to inoculate everyone.”

“Go for it. Just try to be gentle,” She nodded, turning to Sharise. “I’d like to get started on your treatment, Counselor, if you are comfortable with that. However,” Shaidi left the room for a few moments, returning with a small, circular device. “I want you to wear this neurocortical monitor, just out of precaution. We don’t know how your body will react to the medication, so any and all efforts to keep you safe will be taken. Okay?”
