Mwezi stood in front of a display of the Wolverine’s schematics, examining the layout of the ship. There was a slight furrow to his brow as he looked across the display.

Seems like a familiar scene, a soft voice spoke, as Kula stepped up to put her head against his shoulder. He felt her coming closer, but was too focused on his study to respond. She spoke in the somewhat obscure moon dialect of Lalevɪn, the ancestral language of their species. It was mostly replaced in common speech by Galvɪn, the ‘words of unity’, but the moon dialect in particular and Lalevɪn in general had the benefit of not being translated by Starfleet’s universal translators, making it more intimate for the mates, knowing the words they spoke were for themselves alone.

Mwezi nodded thoughtfully. Much like our time on the Levi. Although this map is a little less… redacted.

Kula laughed. I remember being so focused back then, on anything and everything I could learn about this place, how different it was from our childhood. It’s not so different, in the end. Not for us.

I was a shuttle pilot, Mwezi retorted, leaning over just enough to kiss her forehead.

And is there something wrong with being a shuttle pilot? Shilo asked, stepping over to stand on Mwezi’s opposite side.

No, it’s just not what I am, Mwezi snorted.

Shilo stuck out their tongue. I miss it. Moya hates being stuck as a paperweight. She wants a body again.

I can talk to the Senior Officers, but it’s a hard sell. Ships like this don’t have the infrastructure to support a living shuttle, Mwezi shrugged.

Their playful banter was interrupted by someone approaching in the corridor.

[enter someone else’s character. I just wanted to kinda establish Mwezi was standing around and got carried away]

T’Pris was just heading to the lounge on her break when she noticed Mwezi standing as if unconscious, staring at the ship’s navigational display. She glanced at him, a bit concerned.
OOC: Can she see who’s speaking to you or is that in your mind?

~Dr. T’Pris

[OOC: All three speakers are present in the scene! Mwezi and his two partners. Kula and Shilo. They’re just speaking in an alien language, it is a soft language, with a lot of vowels]

Mwezi noticed the science chief and turned towards her, giving a small wave. Kula and Shilo also waved, as Mwezi began speaking in Federation Standard. “Greetings… Lt,” he paused for a moment to check the pips on her collar. “I don’t know if we’ve met. I’m Mwezi, I’ve just joined the security team. This is Kula,” he gestured to the black and white laleri to his right, “And Shilo,” he gestured to the white and pale reddish-orange laleri to his left, “my fiancee’s.”

T’Pris nodded in response to the waves and made her way over. “A pleasure, no I do not believe that we have actually had time to meet. I have been involved in away missions since coming aboard.”

“And we only arrived a few days ago,” Mwezi replied with a small nod.

“Are you a scientist? I know the science and medical teams wear blue,” Kula interrupted, a gleam in her eyes. “I’ve been meaning to schedule a meeting, to see if I can take on some civilian duties helping out in science. I have a doctorate in theoretical and warp physics, although it’s a little out of date. It’s been a while.”

“I am. I was a civilian Scientist when I was first boarded but Captain Morris reinstated my commission when in need of a Chief Science Officer. By all means, I am sure we could find a project for you in your spare time. Have you ever served as a science officer?”

“Not… exactly?” Kula responded. “I spent the majority of my career in research and development in the civilian sector, before the incident that forced me to… retire.” She seemed unsure for a moment, glancing at Mwezi, who shrugged in response to her glance. “Mwezi served some time on a Federation starship afterwards, and I assisted in some things there, but much of it was classified and I spent a lot of time in our quarters, reading history and catching up on all the science.”

“Nothing wrong with that. I served several years in the private sector myself.” T’Pris said.

Shilo remained silent, simply wagging his tail a little.

“A pleasure to meet you both, Shilo and Kula. I must admit that I had heard of your presence on ship and have been curious.”

“We’re happy to be here,” Shilo replied with a soft smile. “We’re very happy to finally be able to live with Mewzi again. It seems he always ends up on the ships with a lot of … covert things going on. From the Levi to the Asimov, and now the Wolverine. It is odd to me, how many ships have missions in intelligence and spying, while the Federation puts on such a front of being open and… they were much more honest in our time.”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Mwezi
Security Officer USS Wolverine

“In your time?” Asked T’Pris, that statement catching her off guard.

~Dr. T’Pris

Mwezi smiled awkwardly. “Yes, uh, we were not born in this century. The incident my beloved speaks of was a…, um, I can never quite remember the explanation,” he paused, looking towards Kula for support.

“There was a dimensional transference which locked us in a sort of stasis for… hmm… nearly a century and a half by human reckoning?”

“That,” Mwezi pointed at Kula with a chuckle. “It split us into two versions of ourselves as well - you can look us up in the history books. Well, you can look up Kula. Kula ‘prime’ made many scientific discoveries in her long and storied career, while Shilo ‘prime’ and I lived much more private lives.”

“Fascinating, I will definitely do that.” T’Pris murmured as she sipped her tea. “Was it just like waking up from sleep and finding time had gone by?” She asked curiously.

~Dr. T’Pris

“There was no sense of sleeping. It was highly disorienting. One moment Shilo and I were in a shuttle, the next there was a dizzying mess of colour and light and shapes and sounds, then we were floating in the endless void with Kula - not space, but a place of nothingness. Then, what seemed like only a few moments later, we were in the corridor of a ship, and over a hundred years had passed.”

“Much the same for me, although my entrance into the sub-dimension was a little more violent and involved fire and explosions - really not a great thing when one is on a space station. I was alone, then Shilo and Mwezi were there.” Kula added.

“I would say that would be very disorientating. I salute the three of if you with re orientating. I imagine that was not easy as well. Did you need to re educate yourselves?”

~Dr. T’Pris

~Dr. T’Pris

“Less re-education, more catching up on all the new science,” Kula grinned, “And history! So much happened. The Alliance joining the Federation, for one thing. Incredible!”

“I can imagine” T’Pris murmured. She shook her head a bit. “I could not imagine all the science innovations that have happened in that time.”

“So many!” Kula agreed

“A little for me. The general idea of a security officer did not change, but I received training in newer forms of weaponry, new tactics developed and learned, and new security codes,” Mwezi nodded.

“Security is very physically oriented, so imagine that you have had to train your automatic movements somewhat.”

“I’m just a simple shuttle pilot. Or at least I was. I was never trained to fly Starfleet shuttles, never even saw a Starfleet ship other than Mwezi’s. I helped at the nursery while they explored our new future. Much changed, but baby ships haven’t changed that much,” Shilo added.

T’Pris looked at Shilo curiously. “Shuttle technology did change that much then?”

~Dr. T’Pris

“Galdori shuttles are very different from Starfleet,” they replied with a chuckle. “And modern Starfleet even more. Living ships haven’t changed too much, although there have been innovations that make the connection smoother and more responsive. I can still pilot Galdori shuttlecraft, but we were not permitted to take one to the Wolverine - it would not do well separated from the mind-scape, and the Wolverine does not have the proper facilities to house and feed it.”

T’Pris blinked and sat forward suddenly. “I am sorry. Did you say living ships?”

~Dr. T’Pris

“Of course,” Shilo responded matter-of-factly, almost surprised that someone didn’t know. “All ships in the Alliance fleet are living. They are part of our communities, and care for their crew as much as the crew cares for them. It is honestly disconcerting to be flying around space in an unthinking, unfeeling lump of cold metal.”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Mwezi
Security Officer USS Wolverine

“Fascinating,” T’Pris said as she sat back. “Did you create them or are they an organic being. Evolving on its own?” It was obvious that T’Pris’ scientific mind was piqued.

~Dr. T’Pris

Shilo furrowed their brow thoughtfully. “More of the first. Okinosian bioengineering is highly complex. All lifeforms on their planet are intrinsically connected in a fungal network, and they have been creating living … constructs for as long as they have been a civilisation. They are able to create new forms of life, and the Living Ships were part of that. If I remember my history right, before the Kalarans joined the Alliance, the living ships were just simple-minded ‘containers’ for space travel - no smarter than a jellyfish - but by the time I became a pilot, they had complex minds able to link to the psionic network. I’d say they’re comparable to a toddler, now. Capable of some limited independent decision-making, but still ultimately dependent on pilots and crew for anything complex.”

T’Pris was leaning forward slightly as she listened avidly. “That is…remarkable. I can say I do not think even my people could make such a claim though we have made great strides in the Medical and Scientific fields, but nothing like that.”
