Mwezi walked up to sickbay, giving a little sniff to the air. It didn’t smell bad - pretty normal smell, as far as sickbays went. He stood in a place where he was visible but not in the way. Not difficult to be visible, given his size. Not easy to be out of the way, considering his size.

A male Catian Lt in medical blue walked over, “Hello Lt. How can I help you?”

NL S’Rus, Medical Officer

Mwezi perked up at the approach of the medic, his tail wagging for a moment before he stilled it. “Good afternoon! I have just arrived on the Wolverine. I am here for my boarding physical. Lt j.g. Mwezi.”

“Welcome aboard. I am Lt. S’Rus. I will be doing your physical. Rrrright this way.” He led Mwezi over to a biobed. His hands tapped over the nearby console, “Ah, herre you arrre. Is there anything specific you would like to go overr?”

NL S’Rus, Medical Officer

Mwezi thought for a moment. “I believe it is just a regular physical,” he replied. “I am slightly overdue for my yearly check-up, as my previous ship was rather undercrewed for the last few months.”

S’Rus nodded, “Not a problem. If you will please lay back, I will begin a full scan for yourrr yearrrly physical.”

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

Mwezi nodded and laid back on the biobed, waiting as the scans were made.

The scans revealed that Mwezi was healthy as can be, his two hearts making an unusual rhythm on the Echocardiogram, compared to most beings.

S’Rus was not familiar with Mwezi’s species. So he did a thorough cross reference of Mwezi’s readings with his previous medical records and the Medical database. “Everything looks good, so far.” S’Rus pressed a button and two large buttons descended from the wall. “Cardio test, lay on your back and use the peddles like you are climbing stairs.”

Mwezi followed instructions. As he used the testing equipment, a small discrepancy was flagged by the system, his heartrate rising a little faster and higher than previous tests, and as his heartrate increased, the scans began to pick up higher than normal concentrations of several hormones in his blood.

“Alright, Lt you can stop. Please stay there. I’m showing some discrepancies in your heart rate and above normal hormone levels. I’m going to run a quick blood test.” S’Rus pressed a hypo to his arm and withdrew a blood sample. Then he put it into a scanner to identify the hormones and determine their function within Mwezi’s species.

Mwezi stopped, sitting patiently with a slight furrow of concern on his brow, watching S’Rus as he examined the results. He was a little concerned.

The scanner analysed the hormones and identified them as growth hormones, specifically ones associated with the onset of puberty in Mwezi’s species.

S’Rus came back, “Everything is fine, Lt. Apparently, you have reached puberty and your growth hormones are activating.”

Although S’Rus probably expected the words to bring calm, the nearly eight-foot tall alien instead began to experience a mild panic attack. He put his hands firmly on the biobed in an attempt to steady himself. “Oh. Oh no. No. I didn’t, we didn’t…” he took an unsteady breath, then began to hyperventilate as he failed to calm himself. “The Second Change? We didn’t do the bonding ceremonies..! I’m too young! I…” He paused for a moment, “Oh Lune, I forgot they count years different in the Federation. It’s been, what… nine years since I joined Starfleet? That’d make me…” he furrowed his brow. “Ilos, I’m thirty-three.”

S’Rus set a hand on Mwezi’s shoulder. “This is a significant event in yourrrr culturrrre I take it? Why don’t you tell me about it?” The more information S’Rus had the better he could help. He also set the computer to do a further search on ‘The Second Change’.
