Ayla let silence fill the space between them as she mused over his explanation. She had no doubt of his sincerity and could easily tell how important it was to him- she didn’t need to be an empath to know that- but it was easy to get tunnel-vision when you assumed you were on the ‘right’ side. “What happens when you have few options and aren’t in control of a situation, but are still expected to do your duty?”

The question was one that he had experienced before. Too many times; both before Star Fleet and since.

“Duty, follow orders. Obey the chain of command. At the end of the day there are a handful of lessons that I’ve learned. One, we are rarely in control of a situation. Take me on the ship, I’ve studied every conduit of this ship, every blueprint, even pulled a few strings to get a holoprogram of it before arriving. I’ve studied as much of the crew manifest as I could, and have tried to learn as much about those that I work and serve with as I can. No matter how much knowldege I have though, someone will surprise me. Someone will do something that was planned for or expected. None of us are truly in control, we can only prepare ourselves as much as we can and hope that it’s good enough when darkness falls.”

He paused for a moment, almost as if he was collecting his thoughts.

“The second thing I’ve learned is that the most important thing you can prepare isn’t the logistics, it isn’t your combat skills, your espionage skills, your interpersonal communication. No, as important as all that is, the most important thing to develop is your inner morals, your code of ethics, your standards for right and wrong.”

He was empathic, that was for sure. But Ayla just watched him with her hazel eyes, listening to not just his words but the way he said them. His body language, his energy. All told her a story that could either reinforce his words or counter them. Or even more common still, be a strange mix of the two.

“No matter what if you have developed that properly and thoroughly then you can face any situation, whether in or out of Star Fleet. So to answer your question, in honesty, I can’t answer it. Because too many factors may change my course of action. Which duty? Star Fleet, I have never promised Star Fleet that I would follow them with unfettered loyalty, I believe in the mission of Star Fleet and I’m willing to do what is necessary to procure the mission of Star Fleet and the Federation, however, I would not hesitate to question an order, to disobey an order, or to counterman an order that went against my inner compass. That said, I would also not hesitate to do what needs to be done for the greater good.”

The pain that emotionally racked through his psyche when he said that last phrase would have discernible to anyone but to an empath it would have had the possibility of being painful.

Ayla actually had to pause in her observance in order to take a moment to recognize the pit of feeling that had been dropped into her body, wrap it up gently and tuck it away. People didn’t quite understand that emotions carried weight and that when a psi-positive person took them on, they had to be physically dealt with one way or another. In her case, it would likely mean some meditation or a martial arts workout.

He had turned towards her, if there was any sign of the pain that his emotions had caused her Wraith would be capable of seeing them, he remembered as she spoke that she was empathic.

“Tell me about this greater good. What does that look like for you in everyday life?” Sharise said once she had quietly composed herself.

“It means discipline, training, always being alert. I do my job, and I do my duty: the duty of keeping people safe; on this ship, in my circle of people I care about… my family. In the everyday it simply means preparation. In the moments of action, it means unfettered instant and appropriate reactions.” He paused as he considered the situation. Rather than address the weight he must have placed on her psyche he instead walked over to his mini bar by the desk. On it was a collection of both alcoholic beverages such as whiskey and andorian ale, but also a kettle of hot water and several varieties of teas and coffees.

“Would you like something to drink while continue?” He asked as he stood by the collection.
