OOC: Just providing a few medical record notes here:
- He’d suffered a deep wound to the upper abdomen that had been sutured.
- Hypovolemic shock due to blood loss
- Given two units of Betazoid type Z blood along with plasma during surgery
- Kayolane 175 ml for sedation and pain had no effect
- Drechtal Beams were used to cut nerve signals and prevent pain sensation
- Blood worked showed echtallin poisoning. It was made to cause nerve damage and hyperactivity, fever but no infection… the body created a crusty residue at the wound from the immune system the nerves, it increased pain, prevented loss of consciousness. It interacted with typical medications, making symptoms worse rather than relieve them. The poison itself was like nervous system acid, damaging and burning the nerves, causing central nervous system dysfunction, which explained his body’s temperature fluctuations. There was the potential for long term nerve damage and organ damage both from the poison itself and the effects of the central nervous system dysfunction. It would cause pain too. It was intended to be a slow, agonizing death as the poison slowly dissolved the nerves and the central nervous system slowly shut down.
Treatment for Echtallin Poisoning:
- hydrolyze treatment - It was a compound that would neutralize the poison, but do it too quickly and it would react with the poison instead and kill him. It had to be given in multiple doses per day for several days.
- Pain medication that blocked pain signals should work, but it had to block the pain signals, because the pain was directly from the nerves. Side effects of the treatment were liver or kidney toxicity, heart problems, numbness, and a whole list of other things. The dosing information was there, describing how to decide how much to give, when, and how.
- and only a specific type of sedative would be able to put him to sleep, because the way it acted to put him to sleep was different than most others.
- Even with the antidote treatment - survival was only 20%
- Given Bromocriptine to help regulate body temperature and hormone functions.
- restraining field used to keep him still and ease the misfires of the nervous systemEns. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil nodded. He squeezed her hand, but it was so weak there wasn’t much of a difference. He remained stable, but he was obviously in a lot of pain. The antidote was working though, and after some time, he was able to sit up a little and do small things for himself.
That was when it became more apparent something was wrong. Even when Dee had brought a PaDD, he kept having her do everything with it. He had bumped his hand into a cup of water and knocked it over. Little things like that.
~ Zoi
The bumped cup didn’t phase her. Sisnil was weak and his muscles damaged. It was the lack of infuriating independence that concerned her. Even when he was in more pain and delirious from it, Sisnil had insisted on having a PaDD to try and forge his records.
Following her instincts she began to run several scans. “How are you feeling?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“I’m not worse than I was. I’m fine, Dee,” Sisnil said. “Why?” Her scans showed the poison wasn’t damaging his heart, everything looked about the same. Except… there was damage in the occipital lobe of his brain and damage to the optic nerves.
~ Zoi
“Well, you were singularly focused on getting a PaDD and being allowed to work. Now, you have barely looked at it and haven’t asked for any files or to talk to Morris.” She patted his hand, “I know you’re exhausted, I just want to make sure that’s all it is.”
Readying over the results she understood. She sent a quiet message from the console to Tessan along with the scan results.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“You found something,” Sisnil said. It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. He could sense it in her emotions.
~ Zoi
“Damage from the Echtallin,” she began to explain when Tessan approached.
Tealor walked in PaDD in hand. He looked at Zoi’s readings a second time. “I see you are awake, tired still?” he asked. “So couple things, you need to not use your gifts , you will heal faster. ” he did not wait for him to respond. “The poison has done some damage to the optic never in your eye, Dradvia lets get a deep scan.”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“Yes Sir.” Dradvia stepped away long enough to grab the neural scanner. She lowered the bed and then began the scan.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“I’m fine,” Sisnil said, but he always said that. He was going to say something, but Tessan didn’t give him the chance. The news didn’t seem to surprise him. He’d been hiding the vision loss.
The scan showed extensive damage to the optic nerves. The poison had done what it did, sat on and essentially dissolved them. It was throughout his brain, but the worst damage was in the occipital region.
~ Zoi
Teasan looked at Zoi, he had been maintaining a barrier around his mind for some time now, he had to have been feeling this since he woke. There was no point in hiding any of it. “Forgive my bedside manner, but you know what we found is bad. We have to find a way to stop the decay in the brain or he’s going to lose more than his eyes. ” he was at a lose at this point he may need new eyes. =^= ” Computer, given the patients current scans and results, and current rate of never degeneration what are the recommended treatment options. ” =^=
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine=^=Treatment options include neurotegenrative therapy, gentrification replication, Psilosynine (ooc: neurotransmitter reponsible for Betazoid telepathy) injection, and cybernetic replacements. No treatment is recommended until Echtallin poisoning has been neutralized.=^=
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Tealor’s lips shifted sideways as he chewed on his cheek. “Well that was not helpful, Ensign we have to figure out a way to slow this stuff down, does it follow any kind of pattern?” he said looking how the poison has progressed so far.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“The more active the person is, the faster it spreads and the more intense its effect.” The end was horrible. “Eventually, it settles in the brain, taking over control the entire nervous system.” She didn’t have any experience with the antidote. “All the cases I read said as the antidote takes effect the Echtallin amasses in one area, as if trying to do the most intense damage before it can be stopped. One of the doctors, Bonpiele, thought injecting the antidote into the brainstem would help slow the progress, but his patient died before he could try.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical OfficerTealor looked at her and then to Zoi. “That’s very risky, ” he said trying to think through other options. “We don’t have much time to make a call before things get much much worse, we could put him in a coma and hope that slows things down enough, or we can try the antidote in the brainstem. Maybe we do both?”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“I don’t want to be in a coma,” Sisnil interjected quickly. “Dee?” He asked, hoping for another answer.
~ Zoi
“Coma is risky. With the current damage… he might not wake up.” Induced coma was much different to sedation. Dradvia racked her brain. “What about medical nantes? Loading them with the antidote and allowing them to create a barrier to the affected areas. Have them send out neural impulse signals to attract the poison? They aren’t attached to Sisnil or his system. The poison would be stuck in the nanite.” In theory.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Tealor smiled, he enjoyed having Dradvia on his staff, she kept this up she would be promoted soon. “I agree on the coma is very high risk, ” he responded, “I am liking the Nanite idea, run a few simulations feel free to enlist help from engineering if you need. ” he said thinking through the idea.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineTessan felt a spike of paranoia in Sisnil’s emotions. “No,” he said. “Not engineering. No.”
~ Zoi
Tealor looked at him confused, “If you insist, but I would like to know why?” he said looking at him with concern, he wanted to use telepathy but he did not want Zoi to exert him self. He gave a concerned look to Dradvia.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineTessan could tell she wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of Engineering either. She knew Sisnil’s objection was either his mistrust of the crew and need for privacy or it was because of Stevens.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
It was both for Sisnil. He distrusted everyone, but the fact Stevens had already threatened or suggested harm, made him an active threat. In no position to protect himself, Sisnil couldn’t let the man near anything that had anything to do with him. “I don’t trust them,” was all he said.
~ Zoi
He looked at Dradvia he would tell she was aware of his distrust before he mentioned it. “Ensign please run some simulations and give Mr Zoi and I a moment.” he ordered.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia actually hesitated. She had given Sisnil her word she wouldn’t leave him alone in Sickbay unless it was Morris. Her word meant everything to her. She couldn’t defy a direct order though. With his vision gone, she wouldn’t be in his line of sight. He could sense her though, right? Yes, that part of his brain wasn’t damaged. He would know how close she was.
Dradvia bit her lip. “Yes, Sir.” She sounded as torn as she felt and meek. She gently squeezed Sisnil’s hand. “I’ll just be at the computer.” It was just across from the side of his bed. She immediately got to work on the simulations Tessan asked for.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Okay. It’s okay, Dee.” He said softly. He could sense where she was. He focused on that. Irrational depictions of Tessan doing something unthinkable flashed through his head.
Tealor watched here move to the console, he lowered his voice. “What is going on? I’ve heard rumors about some hmm poor interactions with an engineer and one of my medical staff.” he said very quietly. “Did someone threaten you?” he asked.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“No,” Sisnil claimed. Normally he’d be capable of pulling off lying to a telepath. Right now he could not maintain that kind of mental fortitude. “I’m fine.”
~ Zoi
“If someone is causing you problems or threatening you it needs to be dealt with.” he said knowing that Zoi was not telling the truth. Tealor was not going to make the man argue, he was too fragile and his feeble attempts to block tealor out would only make him worse, he interrupted. “We’ll talk more about this later, since you don’t want to be honest now. ” he said “And stop using your gifts or I’ll inhibit them, it’s killing you”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“I can-” Sisnil started, but Tealor interrupted him. “Don’t inhibit them.” He said, almost pleading. The pitch of his voice was sure to grab Dee’s attention. Tessan could sense the fear of an all encompassing loneliness.
~ Zoi
Dradvia was purposely not listening to their conversation which was hard given the small size of sickbay. The tone in Sisnil’s voice caught her ear and she turned to look at him. Something was wrong. If he got upset his body could go into fight or flight and then the Echtallin would spread faster.
He looked at the man with compassion, “Look if I wanted to invade your mind I would have done it already, I’m also keeping you mind shielded and have been this entire time” he noted.
“I know,” he said softly. But too many times, he’d seen people seem just fine until the moment of betrayal came. That was what made it hard to trust him.
“Please for your own sake, relax and stop using them, otherwise i might not have a choice. ” he reached out with his mind. ‘I give you my word someone will be with you at all times, Dravida won’t leave you nor do I want her too it’s better you have someone with you’. he then paused. ’ I will keep your mind safe until you can do so on your own. I give you my word on that as well’ he said “Now rest please and stop using your abilities before it kills you”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineThere was a sincerity to his words that seemed to help Sisnil relax. He let out a tired breath. “I can’t see, it’s the only way I can feel safe.”
~ Zoi
Tealor stayed connected, “Ensign, pause what your doing and watch Mr Zoi a moment” he asked.
“Yes Dr. Tessan.” She paused her simulation and stepped back over to the bed. She set her hand against Sisnil’s. She watched Tessan walk away, worried and uncertain what was going on.
He did not wait for her to respond and moved to the back of sickbay, he pulled out one of the mobile terminals gave it access to to sickbays database. Moments later he came back and rolled the computer next to Zoi’s bed. “Ensign you can work on the nanites from here, so Mr. Zoi has some company,” he said ” please let me know when you are done with the simulations.” he requested.
“Yes, Sir.” It sounded more like a question. She sat down on the stool that she had placed by the bed. She transferred her simulations over.
As he turned to leave ‘Trust, Mr Zoi, goes both ways, please don’t make me regret my decision.’ he thought as he worked is way back to his office.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia wanted to ask what had happened, but she was unsure if she should. “Do you need anything?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil squeezed her hand gently. It seemed it was difficult for him not to use his telepathic abilities. “He asked me to trust him, Dee.” He said. “To not use my abilities because it’s accelerating the poison in my brain.”
~ Zoi
She turned to look at him. “I know you can’t trust him but trust me. He’s a good doctor. He won’t harm you. I won’t let him, but I won’t need to do anything. I promise.” She rubbed her hand over his. “I know it’s instinct, but try to not use your abilities. I’m working as fast as I can.”
She was watching the simulations while they talked.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“I know,” he said softly, “I trust you, Dee.” He desperately wanted to see the screen. “Any results?”
~ Zoi
“Ummm, not yet. I put a lot of factors in. I didn’t want to miss anything.” There were a lot of factors to consider. They didn’t have any Echtallin to experiment with, and there wasn’t a lot known about it.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
In a majority of the simulations, the nanites would cause movement within the brain, which would cause the poison to break down the nerves within the brain more quickly. No matter how they did it, it seemed there was a slim chance it would help, and a much greater chance their presence would accelerate the poison.
Sisnil’s body jerked painfully and he groaned softly. “How much longer of this?”
~ Zoi
“Another day before the antidote treatment is finished.” Then they would have to see how much damage there was.
With the results complete, Dradvia paged Dr. Tessan.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Tealor walked back in he was visibly tired, he moved to the bedside look at Zoi’s numbers. “You have news Ensign?” he asked
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia turned the console towards him and shook her head. The results weren’t good. “The simulations only show a 15% success rate at best. Average is 7%.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Tealor for the first time showed concern on his face. “That is not goodnews, We’ll have to go with the antidote only then it’s too high a risk” he noted. “Do you think we should, keep him awake during the procedure take him under” he asked.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineSisnil sensed his concern and frowned. “Is this a good idea? …I mean, I don’t want to not wake up.”
~ Zoi
Tealor looked at him. “We can do the Antidote in the brain stem, or do what we are doing both have risks” he said and looked to Dradivia to see what she thinks. There were not good options just different bad ones.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“If we put you to sleep it would just be the safe sedative we’ve been giving you.” Dradvia thought over it. “The antidote is working. Your last blood count was 56% to 44%. My concern with directly injecting it to the brainstem is that the Echtallin reacts aggressively to the antidote in large doses. That is why it’s incremental dosaging.”
“What,” she paused thinking. “What if we put 1/4th if the dose in the internal carotid arteries and another fourth in the vertebral arteries? That way it is filtered and dispersed more naturally than into the brain fluid. We put the last half of the dose into the jugular vein, that way it spreads through the rest of his system to attack any Echtallin not in his brain.” It would also allow the antidote to be continually dispersed where needed over time.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Dradvia was a good doctor she he was always impressed by her ability to push through noise, even under high pressure. He thought for a long moment. “I like the idea so far” he noted a hint of doubt in his mind. “If we risk smaller more sensitive never clusters? I suppose anything other than the brain or the heart is a better risk, and we can replace the heart and many of the other system of the body,” he noted. “The brain on the other hand”
“Will it destroy my heart if you do that?” Sisnil asked, alarmed.
“I don’t think so. The Echtallin has moved away from your heart. There is damage, but it’s repairable right now,” Dradvia told him.
Tealor looked at Zoi, “You are healing, we just don’t know if it will be fast enough for there not to be irreversible damage to your brain. Ensign Dradvia plan is sound it separates the antidote in equal amounts around your body so the poison can not attach to one area.” he looked at her, “In tactical terms we are making the Echtallin fight a war on multiple fronts.”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineHe seemed legitimately overwhelmed and scared. Tessan felt his mind reach out to Dee for answers and support.
~ Zoi
She set her hand on his. “I think we should give you the sedative so your body can relax as much as possible, and then let us try giving you the antidote in three different locations.” She didn’t allow doubt or worry to enter her thoughts. She was confident and sure.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil took her hand. “Okay.” He said. Tessan could feel his trust in her as he relaxed some. “Let’s do that.”
~ Zoi
Tealor had been on the fence prior to Zoi getting poisoned, it was now clear to him that there was far more than a friendship budding here. “I’ll prepare the sedative,” he finished did not look a Dradvia, blocking Zoi from hearing the thoughts. ‘Don’t protest, this could be the last time you get to speak with him. Hope for the best but’ he paused. ‘Say what you need to say to him’ he thought to her as he left to the lab.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia didn’t flinch, her posture, expression didn’t change. There was no outward sign that Tessan had spoken directly to her mind.
Internally there was no surprise or shock. Apparently she was used to telepaths communicating with her. However, Tessan’s words swelled a fierce denial inside her, like a righteous fire.
Yes, there was a bond there and pain at the idea of losing Sisnil specifically, bit that fire had more to do with her passion as a healer. She would NOT lose anyone else to that (insert colorful poignant Risan blasphemous curses) Echtallin. Not when she had the medical magic of Star Fleet at her finger tips.
Dradvia sat down on the stool and took a damp cloth and bathed his skin with it. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. The antidote is working. Doing the dosing this way will hopefully mitigate further damage. I love you, I won’t let anything happen to you.” She rewet the cloth and continued to soothe him. “I wish there was a way to completely stop the damage, but there isn’t.” They had known that from the beginning. “When your levels get below 50% I’ll bring Simon to visit. He misses you.”
She leaned closer, her voice soft, “The sooner you get better the sooner you can hug me again. I miss that.” There was so much she wanted to say, but she didn’t want to scare him. He had to keep fighting.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“I wanna see Simon,” Sisnil said. “I miss that too.” He looked up at her and squeezed her hand. “I love you. If… If I don’t wake up, Dee. I love you. Tell Noril what happened to me.”
~ Zoi
Dradvia leaned closer. “None of that. You will tell him yourself. You will wake up, Cap’n Zoi. You understand me?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil nodded, but she could tell he wasn’t sure. He squeezed her hand as Tessan re-entered the room.
Dradvia gave him her sternest stare. He couldn’t see it, but he could feel it. That stubborn bossiness that came out sometimes. She squeezed his hand back. “I love you ” she whispered before Tessan reached them.
“Well,” he said walking into the room, less gloomy than before. He wanted the two of them to have a moment to come to what ever terms they needed too, and they would not have been able to do that with him present. “I feel really good about this plan, Ensign, Zoi” he said with a little zest. “Shall we begin?” he said handing two hypo’s to Dradvia, keeping the other two for himself.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineSisnil nodded apprehensively. “Let’s do it.”
~ Zoi
Dradvia took the two hypos and checked them to make sure she knew which ones had been handed to her. Then she picked up a small spray applicator. “I’m going to numb the skin where we’ll give you the hypos.” She sprayed 3 spots on his neck for the internal carotid arteries, the vertebral arteries, and the jugular vein. “Okay, the sedative first.” She gently and firmly pressed the first hypo to his neck and there was a soft pop-hiss as the medicine was delivered. “And now the first half of the antidote.” She pressed that hypo to his jugular and another poo-hiss was heard.
Tealor watched Zoi’s stats closely as she administred the sediative and the first does. He refocused a moment ensuring that both his mind and Zoi’s stayed completed shield from the outside.
That left Tessan with the two quarter doses to administer into the cranial arteries.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
The numbing spray meant he didn’t feel anything as she injected the sedative. Usually, with this poison in his system, the sedative would take a few minutes to put him to sleep. Not this time. Almost as soon as she injected it, his eyes were drifting shut and his hand loosened from hers as he fell asleep.
~ Zoi
Tealor noticed that Zoi was out, “Well now.” Tealor said, “Should not be too hard to find these arteries Mr Zoi, your head is certainly big enough. ” He glanced up at Dradvia, “Just keeping it light Ensign, helps me focus”, he said and then looked back down as he lined up the first hypo, and injected the first hypo, watching his stats for impact, and then applied the last.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia was watching his stats closely as well. When he looked at her to explain there was a hint of a smirk on her face. “I would agree with your original statement, Dr.” The antidote was working, There was just no way to completely stop the damage. They had identified the poison almost immediately. His chances were significantly higher than any other recorded case.
While they waited, Dradvia carefully lined up different medications and tools incase he crashed. She wouldn’t let the Echtallin have him.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Taylor looked at her, “Prioritize brain , we can replace just about everything else.” he noted a medical tricorder in hand, he calabradited it to only detect the echtallin, he wanted to know what it was doing as it was doing it, =^= “Computer display tricorder results on Monitor two. ” =^= he said wanting Dradvia to have access to the information as well. The computer chirped as it acknowledged and information was put it on the screen. Tealor winched, “It’s like the stuff has a mind of it’s own” he he said watching the poison do it’s thing.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia nodded silently, moving things around on her tray. To the first monitor she displayed current neural activity.
She looked up when Tessan spoke and glanced at the screen. It drawing her back in time. “Morlevuim Bastethzel,” Dradvia whispered in Risan. “Hell’s Spite. That’s what we called it. We didn’t know what it was called or its purpose, except to inflict a maximum amount of pain for the longest amount of time possible.”
Tealor thought about it, the name certainly fit but what he was seeing, it behaved more like a parasite than a chemical. He thought, like it was looking for something to consume. He was about to say something but she started speaking again.
“The first time I saw it, I had no idea what it was. Puytic came back from the medical bay. It was really more a laboratory. The doctor was allowed to experiment on us when Lokhar was in a good mood. Putic had a shallow cut along his arm. It really wasn’t bad, so it wasn’tsurprising the doctor didn’t heal it. It was mostly hidden under his sleeve. About half an hour later he was screaming. We tried to quiet him because the guards would punish us for being loud. The cut has this sickly sweet odor to it, and it had rhis clear, sticky, crystalized resin all around it. The edges of the cut looked burned. He began seizing.” Her hand found Zoi’s, her fingers soothing over his knuckles. It was uncertain if she was remembering Puytic or making sure Zoi wasn’t struggling.
It was interesting to him, as she told the story, stuff like this had come out in session but it was forced normally by her remembering and reluctantly releasing it to him, this was organic and felt more trusting than normal, it certainly was progress.
“Kryssa begged the guards to get the doctor. I stead of striking her they laughed and summoned him. The doctor threw a meditation at me and told me I could try if I liked. He just watched…” her voice dropped, “he liked it.”
Tealors mind was f illed with venom, ‘vial people’ he thought, ‘it’s no wonder she and Zoi can’t trust anyone, I wouldn’t either’ he wanted to burn these monsters to the ground, but he needed to focus so he listened. He looked at her his black orbs reflecting her image, if he ever got into proximity with them he had half a mind to to trap them in their own sick games within their own minds his, eyes narrowed and then looked back to the monitor.
“I tried to help him. It took me all day to figure out how to clean the wound. Puytic didn’t speak again, except to scream. Eventually his throat tore from the strain. I tried pain medicine, but it made everything worse. Eventually I would learn it prolonged the suffering and I stopped trying to give it to anyone.”
“Eventually the pain was so bad and the Echtallin took over his brain… I could see on the tricorder how the synapses were working all wrong, but I didn’t know how or why. His body lost all control of itself, and still he screamed. It was 6 days before he died. It should have been before that, but the Echtallin,” she paused to swallow, “makes the brain keep working until the body starves or completely dehydrates.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“That Ensign, that is awful, I hope the federation finds them and deals with them,” he said with disgust in his voice not at her but clearly at them, something she had not heard from him before, he was normally so neutral.
The Federation had found them. They had taken some of the slaves when they rescued the ambassador’s daughter. They told her they killed Lokhar.
“It is truly a testament to your and Zoi’s fortitude that you could have endured such things, and now maintain a relatively productive life, I have seen patients crumblem and lock themselves away mentally for much less.” he said looking the the first monitor.
“We didn’t suffer the poison,” she shrugged. “They did, we only had to watch. That wasn’t even the worst thing they did.” She hoped Tessan had no idea how to begin to imagine what they had seen.
“If I’m honest Ensign I would rather not know unless it in some way would help you and Mr Zoi live with less burdon around the events. ” he said very truthfully, “If I knew they full details I might do something. ” he paused a long moment. “Rash”
“Ensign am I seeing what I think I’m seeing?” he said not wanting to say it but it looked like the Echtallin was slowing down and starting to lose ground in the nervous system. But he was not sure enough about the way to worked to know if what he was seeing was that or just a standard thing.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia watched and shook her head, “I think it is too soon to tell, Sir. I’ve never had access to these kinds of detailed scans when treating someone. I don’t know how to interpret it.”
It was, but more because it was gathering where it really wanted to be, his brain. He reacted to Dee’s touch, her story, within his mind, even though he was sedated. His vitals remained steady.
~ Zoi
”@#$3” he swore something that never happened. “Ensign, do you see it, it’s not slowing it’s collecting in his brain, ” he looked at the numbers. “is it going for the antidote ?” he said some nerves now showing in his expression and voice.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia flinched at curse word. More the vehemence than the word. “That’s where it goes eventually. The antidote has sped up the process, sort of. It usually takes 4 to 5 days to get to the brain. The antidote is destroying it, so it has moved up its timeline… I think.” She studied the scans. “No, it’s not going after the antidote. It’s collecting in his occipital lobe, here,” she pointed at where the optic nerves connected to the lobe. “It wants to do as much damage as possible. If it fights the antidote it can’t cause as much damage.” She watched. “It almost seems desperate doesn’t it? Like it’s alive instead if just a chemical.”
“It does” and in a moment, Tealor reached out with his mind to see if it had one. It wasn’t like he expected it to have a mind of it’s own but if it did he could attack it another way. “Lets check” was all he said
“I think it’s working, but he’s going to lose his sight. It’s burning through the nerve.” She turned to look at Sisnil’s face. He didn’t look to be in pain. At least something worked.
“I thought knowing, having the scans, and technology would make it easier to watch. It’s harder. Knowing that at this point his throat would be raw from the screams, he may have even tried to flay himself alive to stop the pain… I thought the quiet would mean I was doing something right. But all I’ve done is managed to make him unaware of the pain… to a point. It’s still destroying him.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
As if to exemplify Dradvia’s point, Sisnil’s body twitched and his monitors picked up an increase in pain as he groaned weakly.
~ Zoi
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia looked at Tessan curiously, “How?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
It did not have a mind advanced enough for Tessan to influence. Sisnil’s heart rate increased slightly, but that was the only change to his vitals.
~ Zoi
Tealor sighed, “Well so much for the mind theory, guess we are going to have to wait for it to run is’ts course?” he said with a slight pause , “What if we now inject the antidote into the area it’s headed?” he asked
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“I don’t know. All the reports say it has to be given in exact increments an exact timing. Too much and it could kill him.” All they really could do was wait.
Dravia set a hand on his arm for a moment, and checked his temperature. The betablockers had been helping regulate that, but she wanted to be sure.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
He felt a little warm, like he had a fever, but he wasn’t so hot his brain was going to melt. Tessan sensed a reaction in him when Dee touched him. Like he relaxed a little.
~ Zoi
Dradvia lowered the ambient temperature of the biobed. Then she picked up the bowl of water and cloth. She slowly wiped the wet cloth over his exposed skin. It was a primitive way to lower a temperature, but it was more about comfort.
Tealor looked at Dradvia, he knew how much Zoi seemed to mean to her, he kept a close eye on his vitals, “Not Bad Mr Zoi hang in there.” Tealor watched his vitals closely and the monitors. “Ensign” he finally said. “Talk to him,”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia looked up at him, not confused but maybe uncertain. “Oh… okay.” About what? What was safe to discuss around listening ears? She told him about Simon. Every minute detail of every visit she had made to the kitten, everything she did, everything the cat did, down to the way his whiskers twitched and he cried.

Her voice and her touch helped him relax. His vitals even looked a little better. Then his pain got worse and he cried in his sleep.
~ Zoi
Tealor looked to the stats again they looked like they dropped a bit while she was talking to him, he then heard the silent pain. “His pain is increasing, what’s going on” he said searching the surface of his mind a little.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineDradvia looked at the scans, “It’s the Echtallin. It’s eating away the optic nerve. The pain is making him burn through the pain blocker.” Dradvia wipped Sisnil’s face again. “You’re going to be okay. Just a little longer.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Come-on son, just a little bit more, hang in there. “he asked, the level of concern on his face suggested that Tealor really was pulling from him, and judging by the look on his face, truly cared about him
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineIt was another half an hour before they saw a significant difference. The antidote had swept his brain and was gathering in the occipital lobe. Slowly it began to break down the Echtallin a little at a time. There wasn’t enough to get rid of it completely, (part of the dose was still circulating the rest of his body) but it was working.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
In another few hours, Sisnil was waking up. The echtallin wasn’t quite fully out of his system. He still seemed weak and a little confused. Then he bolted up, immediately regretting sudden movement. “Dee? Are you here?”
~ Zoi
Her hand were immediately on his shoulders. “Easy, I’m here. Don’t move. I’m right here.” Dradvia nodded to Kgnan to go get Tessan.
Sisnil settled back in, relaxing. “Don’t let go, Dee. Please.”
“I’m right here. I was just running your blood test. I’m not leaving.” She slipped her hand into his.
“You’re going to be alright. I just finished your blood test. The Echtallin is down to 47 percent.” That was good news because now they could be more aggressive with the antidote.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Tealor came in, he looked concerned about something but his mood changed when he saw the numbers. “How’s he doing Ensign?” he asked pulling out a pen light. “Look her please?” he said to Zoi.
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“The Echtallin is down to 47%. I was preparing his next round of antidote. He’s awake and aware, but disoriented.”
Sisnil scowled. “I can’t see where you want me to look.” He said.
~ Zoi
Tealor was afraid of that, they were going to have a lot of repair to do. He moved the light close to his eyes. “How about now do you see anything?” he asked

Sisnil squeezed Dee’s hand. “Did you change something?” He asked.
~ Zoi
“No we didn’t change anything.” She rubbed his arm gently. “We couldn’t stop the damage, Sisnil. It attacked your optic nerve. We can repair a lot of it, but we won’t know the full extent until after the Echtallin is eradicated from your system.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Tealor placed a hand lightly on his shoulder, “Not to worry, we’ll get your sight back” he said. “You’re in good hands.” he said, “Those numbers are really good, Ensign, let’s get another does in him.”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S WolverineThe next thing Sisnil said was so quiet, they may not have even heard them. “My telepathy is gone. I can’t sense anything.”
Dradvia squeezed his hand. “Okay let me do a scan.” She guided his hand to her side so she could have both hands free.
When they scanned him, they would find damage in his paracortex. The good news was, it likely wasn’t permanent, psilosynine and advanced medicine would be able to restore his abilities.
~ Zoi
“There is some damage to your paracortex. Nothing that is irrepariable. It will just be uncomfortable for a few days.” She took his hand again. “I need to go get the antidote. Less than a minute I’ll be right back, okay?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil squeezed her hand. He didn’t want to let go. He didn’t know how to explain what he felt and without telepathy he couldn’t show her, either. Finally he nodded. “Less than a minute.”
~ Zoi
“I’ll even talk while I go get it, so you can hear me.” And she did, mostly telling him exactly what she was doing and where she was. She went straight to the locker where they kept the medication, opened it, signed out what she took, grabbed the vial, locked the cabinet and returned. “Back.” She set his hand against her side. “I need both my hands okay.” She ran the calculations for the dosage.
“Dr. Tessan, should we break up the dosage like last time?” She would, it seemed to make a difference, but she wasn’t against a second opinion.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Tealor thought about it traditionally it would be better to just hammer whatever it was, but tactics seemed to work better. “I think we should administer it in, split does like before”. He looked at Dradvia and then at Sisnil. What she did not understand was that batazoids lose their powers, it’s not like losing your hearing. I would be like a human losing all of their senses at once, forcing them into sensory depravation for an unhealthy period of time, all while being in withdrawal internally feeling it but not being able to express it.
‘If it gets bad, Sisnil,’ he stated, a name he never used. ‘I’ll help you, I have your mind secure no one will get in. I can proxy for you and Ensign Dradvia, if you want’ he noted.
“Thanks,” Sisnil said aloud. Tessan would understand better than Dradvia. Dradvia had Kryssa, but it was different when it was yourself.
“Ensign please monitor his Dopamine and Serotonin levels, not having his powers will cause a form of” he paused thinking of a word but could not find one. ” withdrawal, we may have to keep them up artificially.”
Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine“I will,” Dradvia confirmed, adding those readings to the continuous scans. Then she finished prepping the three hypos. She gave two to Tessan. She sprayed Sisnil’s neck with the numbing agent and then gave him the first part of the dosage.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Taelor only waited long enough to see that the last hypo was empty and he then carefully injected the remain two.. “There we are,, all we can do now is wait” he said pulling his gloved off.

“When do you think my telepathy will come back?” Sisnil asked hopefully. It was awful on its own but with his vision also gone, it was incredibly difficult not to feel just… Adrift. In nothing.
