Focusing her attention on McGarvey, the empath was aware of his shifting emotional state and smiled softly at here. “Thank you for inviting me here,” she said softly before moving over to the fireplace to join him.

“Tell me about this place.”

Lt. Sharise, CNS

As he finished getting comfortable he motioned to the seat opposite him, inviting her with the gesture to have a seat.

It was a simple thing, the invitation but it spoke volumes to Ayla. She sat without any fuss.

“This was my own personal escape. Growing up my friend Jacob and myself grew up at the Refuge. We were both outcasts for different reasons. We fixed a holosuite and he would program different environments for us, this was one that I asked for and helped design. It’s based on an Irish coast. My family has heritage from Ireland and Scotland and I designed this place when I was learning as much as I could about my family. It became my sanctuary. Later it would also become a place that I could think and strategize without distraction. I had thought this place would help make me more comfortable.” He knew that she was empathic and so saw no reason to lie to her about his feelings. He had been impressed thus far with her bearing and poise as the few times that he had invited people into this place only one or two seemed to be able to relax in the dark ambience of the castle room.

Looking around, Sharise could appreciate the room with the new perspective he had just given her. When her hazel gaze returned to him, she smiled softly. “It does have a certain enchantment to it, doesn’t it. Like stepping back in time, even if on some worlds such a place would be perfectly average and everyday.”

“What brings you to the Wolverine, Peter? As I’m sure you’re aware, the Wolverine has a… unique crew and everyone has a different story that doesn’t always fit the mold or expectation. What’s yours?”

Lt. Sharise, CNS

He chuckled. Before Catherine that wouldn’t have been possible but now he could reveal at least that much. Considering the situation as a whole some would think he was crazy for even a chuckle but the irony wasn’t lost on him.

“I don’t follow orders well. Not in a typical way I’m not beligerant, I’m accurate. I also do what is right or at least what I consider to be right no matter the consequences. There are several people in Star Fleet that knew that about me before I joined the first time. However, a few of those people wanted to put me here to give me another chance after I went AWOL… several others also advocated for my placement on this ship when they realized they couldn’t block my reentry. They hope I take a phaser beam to the chest doing something that can never have a full report so I disappear just like my call sign.” The strange thing for an empath would be how McGarvey got strangely cold as he described these unknown people, no fear, no regret, only a strong forged will to persevere.

“And what is it that you want now that you are here with us?” Ayla said. Her words were all chosen very intentionally. They were all in this together, whether some of them liked it or not. For the most part, she wouldn’t dig into his past unless he brought it up or it became necessary. Her job in this moment was to assess the man before her who would serve on this ship to help protect and defend his vessel and crew. And that is exactly what she would do.

Lt. Sharise, CNS

“I want to keep other people safe. That is why I joined Star Fleet and why I hope that I’m here on the Wolverine, because my skill set can best be utilized here to make sure that those that Star Fleet protects are kept from harm.” He wanted that to be the only reason of course, but he knew that he had made more than a few enemies in Star Fleet as well; he wasn’t unaware of the double reason that he had been placed on the Wolverine after returning to Star Fleet.

The threads of conversations like this one could weave themselves into very different outcomes and Ayla had asked many different versions of the question she was about to ask Peter. What his response would be would tell her a lot but at the same time she hoped it would open up more conversation with him. “What does safe mean to you? What equals harm? And I ask this as a person who worked at a medium-security prison as a rehabilitation specialist, so don’t worry about socially acceptable answers or treating this like it’s a test you have to pass. I’m not giving grades on your answers,” she said with a gently smile.

Lt. Sharise, CNS

Peter sat back in his chair and pondered her question. On one side this seemed like an easy question but he had seen so much harm done in the name of keeping people safe. He stood up and walked to the fire place. He kept himself in side profile purposefully, he didn’t want to project to the counselor that he was ending the conversation but as he looked at the flames he was able to concentrate on his past and consider the question in full.

After sometime he finally spoke, “Safe means having the freedom to make their own decisions. Freedom is safety. I understand that some people will abuse that freedom and inside of that you may have another set of harms. In that we must also try and keep people safe; because those that enable freedom to be present must also make sure it is not abused. Harm, means taking that freedom away. As much as is possible sentient beings should be allowed to walk their own path. Sometimes these concepts can come into conflict obviously, like how a Klingon should be able to pursue his warrior heritage but at the same time those non-warriors around him shouldn’t be made into combatants. Everything takes balance. In the end, making sure that those who have power are not subjugating the weak only to further their own ends, in that is I think the best way for someone like me to ensure that people are kept safe from harm.”

“My parents lived to help others, and gave of themselves so that others might live. I was one of those others. I lived because they sacrificed, that sacrifice shouldn’t have needed to happen, not if others had stepped in and stopped that group of pirates from being able to gain power for themselves in that section of space, if the freedom that was present had been protected from abuse, our ship all those years ago wouldn’t have been attacked.”
