Sisnil closed his eyes and hugged her tight as he could. “How much longer will this last for you?”

Dradvia sniffed again and then drew in a shaky but deep breath. “Ummm…” She looked around for the chronometer trying to think. “The worst should be over in a couple hours, I think.” She’d had a very small dose. “I… usually feel dizzy and can’t eat the next day.”

“At least I think.” Shebwas warming up, the shivering slowing and she was able to relax more. “When… when I first rescued I went through detox. But we were all really hysterical and scared, so the doctors sedated us. Worried we would hurt ourselves. They didn’t realize we were addicted to those too. Every time they gave it to me, I was sick for days after. I took a really small dose. It doesn’t take much anymore.”

Sisnil hugged her again. “I’ll be right next to you ‘till you’re better, okay?”

Could he feel how those words rocked her precarious foundation. The one that stood poorly built and all alone, that already threatened to fall every other day? That everything shifted but became a little more steady. Did he know what he was doing?

She sighed, but it wasn’t sad. More happy and a bit frustrated. “I’m supposed to be taking care of you. How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine,” Sisnil reassured her, “Even the headache is going away.”

“Are you sure? Maybe… maybe I should take a scan,” she pushed up with her hands, but as soon as she did a wave of dizziness hit her and her stomach cramped in agony. She whimpered as she but her lip to stop from being sick again.

Sisnil hugged her to him. “Come on- I’d carry you, but I can’t,” he said softly, and tugged on her. “You’re going to lay down on a bed, okay?”
