“So you’re going to give us a fever?” The Commander asked as the pair ventured closer to him and the Counselor. The XO didn’t know much about medicine beyond the basic first aid, but he wondered what would happen if the body wasn’t able to beat off the fever either.

XO

“Yes. Don’t worry, we will be monitoring you very closely for any changes in your vitals, beyond what is normal.” She smiled, reassuringly to the man, in hopes of keeping him calm. “Trust me, Commander.” It was hard saying those words when she was uncertain of the outcome, but this was the patient and she had to make him feel as safe as possible.

Ayla had assumed as much so mentally she was prepared. Mostly.

As Dr. Shaidi would discover, applying the medicine resulted in the expected fever and eliminating the bacteria and viral combination. Now it was to see if the fever would reduce itself over time.

GM

“Shall we?” She turned to Ahearn, once the scans had been run. Her back turned to the patients, her gaze seemed now apprehensive and uncertain. However, she would not let either of the others see that.

Dr. Shaidi
CMO

“Let’s.” Ahearn replied, a smile sweeping across his emerald green features even though he shared the CMO’s trepidation. “Perhaps, and hear me out for a second before telling me to stay in my lane Doctor,” he said with a wink, “… a rapid cooling of the patient would induce a faster and larger production of cortisol? At least in human patients? I ask because that is sometimes used on live subjects in biological experimentation.”

Ahearn, CSO

Shaidi responded with a perturbed laugh, stealing a leisure glance to the patients, who were depending more on the success of this treatment than either Shaidi or Ahearn were. “Hmm..” Greve muled over the thought, nodding slowly. “Yes, that would work. However, it would be best to wait until the fever has reached the temperature it needs to kill off any of the remaining virus, that way we aren’t risking any rebound from the nasty thing.” She countered, “The Commander is Human, however the Counselor is Napean. We know for certain it will react well to Erin’s body. With that being said, we must tread carefully with Sharise’s. Her physiology does not differ greatly from humans, but it is enough to be of concern.”

“Besides the point, let’s get these people out of their suffering.” Turning, she quickly made her way back to the patients. “Commander Erin, Counselor Sharise; science has been able to synthesize a medicine capable of attacking the bacterial agent. To put it simply, they have created a viral casing for the antibacterial, intended to fool your attacker into believing it is an irrelevant pathogen in the body. Needless to say, along with the fever, which will destroy the virus after its finished with the bacterial agent, you should be experiencing a gradual decrease in your symptoms. Seeing as this is an experimental medication, we cannot be certain of how long it will take.” If it works, she thought to herself. “Any questions for Lt. Ahearn or I, before we begin?”

Dr. Shaidi

“I’m ready. But what I have is not so much a question, but a note,” Ayla said weakly. “Watch my paracortical readings. Sometimes high fevers can induce other odd neurological symptoms in psi-positive people, but not always. If I start seeming beyond the normal scope of hallucinating or anything else, just sedate me and use a neural blocker. It’ll be a kindness,” she said simply. Basically, let her sleep through any induced insanity.

Lt. Sharise, CNS

“Thank you for the information, Counselor. We will do everything in our power to make you comfortable,” She glanced around their humble surroundings. “As possible.”

The Commander didn’t like the idea of being another guinea pig, but found no other option for them. “If I survive this thing, you’ll find me walking the corridors carrying hand sanitizer.” The XO said, only half jokingly. At this point, all he could do is sit patiently while the medical (and now science) staff worked to cure them.

Erin (XO)

“This Sickbay is already lathered in enough sanitation, it could last you a life time– but we have a few extra bottles in inventory, if you need one.” Shaidi smiled, running with the joke.

“Alright. Since we don’t know what impact this medication will have, I want you both to be vocal about anything you feel. Please lay back,” She gestured for them to lean back, just in case they got light headed or passed out. This was all new, and she wasn’t risking ANYTHING.

Shaidi
CMO

Ahearn prepped the first dose and handed it to Shaidi. “When this works, everyone here will owe me and the good doctor a bottle of whiskey. And none of the synthahol garbage. Only the finest Irish will do. Understood? Good. Now let’s get to work.”

Ahearn, CSO

“I can agree to those terms,” She muttered under her breath, filling the first vile with the vaccination, before attaching it to a hyprospray. Since they weren’t too certain of how Sharise might respond to the medication, she made her way to Erin. “Ready?”

The XO merely nodded as he laid back on the bio bed. He didn’t know what he’d be feeling exactly, but wouldn’t hold back speaking up if he felt out of the ordinary.

XO

Once she received his confirmation, she injected the hypospray into his neck, stepping back to watch his vitals.

Lt. Shaidi
CMO

The reaction produced a high fever, as intended… but a little too high… at 41.8 C. The XO fainted from the extremely high fever.
