Darklis considered this and put on her problem solving hat. That was what she was supposed to do, right? Stellar cartography. Astrometrics. Those were good. And Counseling and psychobiology. High Psi? And Romulan specialization. That was daunting, at least to Darklis. Considered ‘brilliant’ by some, she didn’t hold a candle to the experience T’Pris had. Better start learning, girl, she thought to herself!

“I’ve never heard of psychobiology. What is that? Is that related to Psi ratings? And, in that context, do Romulans have that? I’ve only read a very little but it seemed that that aspect of the Romulan Vulcan natures were night and day, that the Romulans didn’t possess it. Or, perhaps, are they latent, unnoticed and hence unused?”>>>

“Psychobiology is the study of the biological basis of behaviour and mental phenomena. Yes, the Romulans do have a psi quotient to some extent. They still carry the same DNA as Vulcans though it has been radically evolved due to so many generations being on Romulus. In the majority of Romulans the psi skills are now latent through multi generational disuse.”T’Pris paused a moment then added, “It has been theorized that gene manipulation may have been involved as well though there is no proof of that.”

“Gene manipulation to reduce psi ability?” she asked. “Why would they do that?” Her brain took another leap. “I understand the disuse. I mean, use it or lose it. There is a lot that can be forgotten from one generation to another, but really? Can something like that just be evolved in the span of so few generations compared to the typical evolutionary process? What would bring the latency to life?” She waved her hand. “Yeah, I just spit questions out. Feel free to cherry pick any of them to answer.” She was quite aware of the nature of loss - even taking such as simple thing as a recipe that is not passed down, much less valuable familial information or history. So much lost that way, but still, how does one glean what is important through a lifetime of accumulating memories and knowledge? Mentally Darklis tried to shrug that off. But so too how many secrets were knowingly passed on, that family black sheep, or forgotten or passed into family legend?

“I am sorry, I was imprecise. I did not mean that they specifically manipulated the psi latency out though that may have been a side effect. It is just that we are pretty sure there was some gene manipulation given the new physical attributes that they seem to have that we do not. Such as brow ridges in some. I know that with Ambassador’s Spock’s work with the Reunification Sect on Romulas that he reported that he was able to work with many of the followers in regards to re awakening some of their psi abilities through meditation, etc. So it is evident that it is a latency that can re-awoken in some Romulans.”

Darklis had heard something about Ambassador Spock, and surely she had heard a ‘lot’ about his time in the sciences. Between him and Kirk there were volumes of material and references. It seemed outlandish what she read. One science log from a fleet ship would read ‘logged fauna and flora on the beaches of Ceti Omega 3. Mild sunburn.’ Spock’s log would read ‘encountered a massive space amoeba that was able to swallow whole systems’. He was associated with few places but the man seemed to be everywhere! “It seems like a lot of races tinkered with gene manipulation at some time,” she commented. “Do you think that more races have the psi talent but are simply ignorant of it?”

“In my studies I have found that, yes. Even humans have a lot of latent psi ability. That sixth sense or Deja vu feeling.”

<<< She considered T’Pris’ experience with the Romulans. She would be quite valuable in what was coming. “When we get data on the mission and this rogue group, I’ll definitely be leaning on you and your experience.” Glancing over she saw the others but as yet didn’t know enough to say what they knew about anything. “All I know is that two people have been kidnapped by this rogue Romulan group. We’re to track them down and rescue them.” There were some small other details that she brought to mind. “They are part of what is knows as the Sabre Group. All that they had was a brief registering of a Romulan signature. I’m hoping there is more on a coming data pack. Your eyes would be good on that data too when it comes.”

T’Pris pondered this for a moment before she said, “Saber group… it is not uncommon for the Romulans to have splinter groups whether sanctioned or unsanctioned. I would be interested in studying what ever data we have about them.”

“I’ll call you when the data comes in,” DC promised. “Are the Romulans that .. chaotic .. that they have all these groups? Are they based on ideal? Clan? Pursuit of power?”

T’Pris actually smiled wryly. “The Romulans are a contradiction. Their first loyalty is to their clan and they will do anything to further their House gains, their next loyalty is to the Romulan people, though not really the people, but the government and military. Everything created or produced is to further the governments aims for Romulas as a whole. Their sense of honor is very strong though, both for House and government. But if a House’s aims are not with the current government they have no trouble working against it. That is where these splinter groups can come in, they are usually particular Romulan Houses or military factions that do not subscribe to the current government’s agenda or aims and have the power or money to further their own.”

Darklis felt herself flushing at what T’Pris was saying. It was like she was reading her own mail, at least to a degree. “I .. I think I can understand their thinking.” She tapped at the tabletop with a nail. “I .. my family left the mid eastern area of Europe not too long after colonies started forming past our system. We have pretty strong gypsy roots and are highly clannish. Family is everything and family loyalty is paramount.” >>>

T’Pris nodded but refrained from commenting, easily catching on to the other woman’s unease by her body language.

How do Vulcan's get a 'feel' for one another and how they are doing with everyone so .. level all the time? "Would they have their own, um, patrons in this case? Someone more powerful funding them? Can the Romulan houses support themselves in such a venture as ships and equipment?">>>

“Possibly, it depends on the size of the group and how much resources and ships they have. If it is large enough then it will more then likely be government funded.”
