David sat as the door closed behind the last of his senior officers. “Everyone’s here, Admiral, when you’re ready.”

Admiral Nelson stood up and crossed over to the display. “Good afternoon,” he began. “For the past several months, Starfleet Intelligence has been investigating a group calling themselves the Romulan Imperial Saber - an imperialist faction who believes themselves the true inheritors to the Empire. They’re aggressive, but small, and we didn’t consider them a particularly large threat. Until this week.”

The admiral paused for a moment, keying up an image of a Bajoran Commodore, dressed in an Intel uniform. “Three days ago, the Ragnar experienced a brief loss of main power and a slightly longer sensor failure. Upon bringing systems back online, they found that Commodore Oper Keme, the head of the project, was nowhere to be found. An investigation of their sensor logs from immediately before the incident showed a short flash of something with a Romulan signature, but not enough to identify it.”

He turned off the monitor and returned to the table, sitting immediately to David’s left. “Your mission is to pick up the trail from what we have so far, find Commodore Oper, and return her to Black Rock. All the data we have on this group and their potential whereabouts has been transmitted to Captain Boudreaux, as well as Commander Morris. Be discreet - we don’t want any word of this incident getting out - but be effective. Not only is the Commodore a personal friend, she has top-level clearance and has been briefed on things most of the fleet hasn’t even theorized about. Accordingly, I’ve assigned you a Marine detachment to accompany your new refit, as well as a civilian scientist with extensive experience with Romulans. They should be aboard within the hour, and then you are to make best possible speed to the Ragnar’s position when Commodore Oper went missing. Are there any questions?” He looked around the room at the assembled senior staff, the frown beginning to return.

Well, if no one is going to ask, Darklis thought. She held up her hand. “Admiral, what are their assets, this Sabre Group?” It wasn’t like the Wolverine was big. Sure, by a scan of her abilities, she did punch above her weight class, but that still didn’t mean they could face down a couple of war birds even with a handful of marines. “Where do they operate from?” Surely if SI had been on them for several months they must have some bread crumbs more than go here and sniff around.

“Good question, Lieutenant. Everything we know is in the data pack, but the summary version is that we have a few planets they’re known to frequent, one with a confirmed base and a couple others with suspected bases. As far as we knew, they only had a few, out-of-date ships, but evidently they either had more advanced ships we didn’t find, or they have developed some sort of new tech to boost those ships’ power. Be on your guard - they’ll probably be expecting reprisal, but hopefully we catch them off guard.”

“No offense Admiral.” Cel said, narrowing his eyes, as he had some experience here. “How do we know that Commodore Oper isn’t a part of this group?” He asked, looking at him.

David chuckled quietly as the admiral replied, “I like you, Lieutenant. Of course there is an element of uncertainty, but as a high-ranking intelligence officer, she has of course been subject to numerous background checks and as far as we can tell, would have no reason to aid them. If you discover this to be untrue, I expect you all to use your best discretion in addressing the issue.”

Was not to much to be done by a doctor at this point however his skills as a psychologist could come in handy. He was not a profiler by trade, but years of reading people both figuratively and literally made him a good one.

“With your permission commander I would like to go through the files we have and put together a deep profile on the people we know about.” he suggested. Having good information on their likely behavior and habits, could help them get ahead of the game and find them faster.

Alita liked that idea and figured any leg up was a good one.

“I like that idea, let me know if you need any assistance.”

“Agreed,” David said. “Captain Boudreaux, I want either you or Mr. Zoi to work with Dr. Tessan on that. The other one of you should sit down with Lt. Akanar and go over their tech. I want us to know what we’re dealing with.” He looked around at the assembled officers. “Anyone else have a question for the Admiral?”

Meanwhile Commander Johnson was in his Office working away on the Starbase. This whole business with the Commodore being kidnapped has been keeping busy. He was an attaché to Admiral Nelson and had been tasked with putting together the pack for the Wolverine. He yawned, he had been up for at least 24 hours, leaning back in his chair he rubbed his eyes and his computer beeped urgently....if a computer can beep urgently.
He leant forward and the computer flashed an urgent message on a secure Intel channel. Johnson frowned and opened it. He took a moment to take the message in.
“Ohhh sh....” He said leaping up to his feet and running out the door sprinting towards the Wolverine.

Minutes later a slightly out of breath Johnson arrived at the conference room door. He took a second to gather himself and get his breath back and entered. Admiral Nelson frowned at the sound of the doors opening and then, when he recognised Johnson, he beckoned him over. Johnson sped over to the Admiral and whispered into his ear. Nelson nodded and frowned again his face sombre. When Johnson was done he looked around the room.
“It appears the situation is more urgent and dire than we thought. Commander Johnson has just informed me that Fleet Captain Mary Mayfield has also been captured. It is believed the same group are involved. She was… is Second to Commodore Oper. We need this sorted. Now. If there are no further questions I’ll leave you all to it. I’ll also get that squad of Marines arranged now. Johnson, I trust you’ll sort that now.” Johnson nodded and left the room. Nelson looked around questioningly and impatiently.

“What do those two officers have in common? Are they apart of some project or operation?” Cel asked, his hands folding into a diamond in his lap, he leaned back his face hard, but deep in thought.
