Dradvia stood on the transporter pad of her transport ship and waited as the chief got the approval to send her over to her first posting - Wolverine. From the ports she’d peeked out, it certainly seemed to live up to its name. It looked dangerous. She had shuddered. She hated space flight. She didn’t want to be there. She had not really thought about that when she took the sponsorship to the Academy. That she would have to serve on a star ship. She hadn’t known what to do with herself after she’d been rescued, and the only bright spot in that dark time was her knack for nursing the others. Being able to ease their pain if not her own. It wasn’t like she had any family back on Risa that was waiting for her return.

She hated hurtling through endless space, not knowing where she was going. The sickening feel of a warp drive engaging, the panic of wondering what was next every time the engines stopped. The sound of boots outside her quarters as people walked by, especially if they were silent. She also hated being alone. Being alone in a room was always a prelude to another living horror.

Dradvia mentally shook herself, put on her winning smile and nodded as the chief engaged the transporter and she rematerialized on the Wolverine. “Welcome aboard Ensign. Your quarters are on this deck. Sickbay is two decks down, and the galley is one deck down.” The man checked a PaDD on his console, “Your checkins start in 20 minutes. Would you like me to show you the way?” He smiled at her.

D knew he was trying to be nice, but she couldn’t bring herself to accept the offer. “No thank you. I want to see if I can figure it out.” He nodded, she looked young, just out of the Academy. He remembered wanting to prove himself on his first ship too. He held the PaDD out to her. “Good luck En. You’ll do just fine,” he tried to reassure her. She took the PaDD with a soft thanks, hitched her duffle higher and then stepped out of the room. She glanced at the number for her quarters and matched it to her mental map she had committed to memory. She turned left and headed down the corridor.

As she walked she felt the ship begin to move. She dug her nails into her palm and reminded herself this was a safe ship, but still the feel of the engines seemed very close. She pressed the control to her quarters and stepped in long enough to put her bag down. She sighed. She’d hoped the size of the ship meant she’d have to bunk with someone, but no, it was a single. That was a problem for later. She turned quickly, leaving what was supposed to be her space and headed for the turbolift.

Sisnil felt… fear. There was a new presence on board and each time the ship began to move, that person became afraid. That person hated space flight. Heh, that was pretty funny actually. He knew she was close, probably in her quarters, but he didn’t expect to run into her as he approached the turbolift. “Afraid of space?” He asked as he walked up behind her.

~ Zoi

Dradvia whirled. She had heard someone approaching, but hadn’t expected to be addressed. Most people ignored ensigns. He was…huge, in her perspective. Not physically, but his aura of command, confidence, the rakishness, the rough edges, were huge and threatening to her. “No.” She clipped out. She wasn’t afraid of space, just the travel. But her posture stood erect, solid, daring him to contradict her, even as she wished to avoid a confrontation. Don’t let them see you afraid, don’t give them ammunition, don’t make them angry.

She forced her shoulders to relax, “Nerves. First assignment.”

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

“Uh-huh.” Sisnil looked at her disbelieving me. “I’m a Betazoid, buddy, you can’t fool me.” He looked her over. Risans were famously beautiful, this woman was no exception. But he was not one to be distracted by beauty. He gazed at her, “Afraid of… travel. Don’t like the sounds of the engine.” He watched her for a moment, “Relax, your secret’s safe with me. Not much point, or fun, in bullying little new officers.”

~ Zoi

She had grit that was for sure, but his mention that he was Betazoid caused a ping of care and sadness from some related memory. The lift arrived and she moved out of the way as someone got off and then she stepped on.

She shrugged. It was folly to show fear, it did no good. He didn’t know anything, and it was rude to listen to her thoughts anyway. It is none of my concern what you find amusing, Sir.” He was older than her, not by much she didn’t think. However his comment about little new officers made her think he was probably a higher ranking officer. He certainly carried himself with authority. “Besides, you look too tired to do anything.”

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

“Ugh, please don’t call me sir,” Sisnil complained, stepping onto the lift with her. He gave her a look with her last comment, “True that I’m tired, but don’t think for a second tired will stop someone.”

~ Zoi

That sounded like a warning, and she buried the fact she didn’t like how he was looking at her. She shrugged, “Never said it did. In my experience, tired means all bark and a hot grudge. The danger comes later.” She shrugged again as she glanced at him. “Alright then. Guess it will be ‘hey you’ from now on.” If he was an officer she was going to be in so much trouble.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

“Relax, I’m no threat to you. Can’t be bothered.” Sisnil said, a response to the thoughts he did hear and her verbal words. It was rude to listen, but Sisnil was a pirate after all. “Hey you is fine by me. Or you can call me by my name. Sisnil.”

~ Zoi

Relax, I’m no threat to you. That was never true. The words reverberated through her skull. Memories flooded and her body went into fight mode. Racing heart, increased respiration, hightened senses. There was no flight. Escape was impossible.

Despite this she was aware of what he said. He couldn’t be bothered, well wasn’t that nice. That was fine though. She would rather be beneath notice. “Deck 6,” she told the cimputer.

“Sisnil,” she said trying it out. The name seemed to roll of her tongue in gentle waves. “Are you going to tell the computer where you are going, or do you just ride around randomly?”

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

“I ride around randomly. Nothing better to do. I’m not an officer. More of a… Consultant. And not by my choice.” He said, voice bitter, but not towards her. He could feel her anxiety. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” He didn’t have the best manners, but he wasn’t out to be a total jerk, either.

~ Zoi

“That sounds boring; you need a hobby.” Not by his choice? If he was a consultant, then maybe his company sent him here? Not her business.

She dared to look him straight in the eye. He was dangerous. She couldn’t pinpoint how, some sixth sense, but she knew it. He was polite now, but she knew if given the circumstances he would be deadly frightening. “You didn’t scare me.” Which was true. His words triggered a memory that still frightened her. She was self aware enough to understand that two people could utter the same words and not mean the same thing. Oh she was wary of him, but not scared, yet. She didn’t think.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

He met her gaze. It wasn’t a serious look. If it was, she would be scared. “Then I didn’t mean to make you scared by indirect means.”

~ Zoi

She didn’t like how he read her. Telepath or not, it was unnerving and uncomfortable. She looked away and shrugged. She opted for uncaring silence rather than talk and have him see more of her. Couldn’t the lift hurry up?

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

It was second nature to him. He did it to everyone. It was against the ethics of most betazoids but he was not “most” anything. “Look, you wanna talk to someone I’ll be around, okay? I’ve got an advantage over other officers: I don’t care.”

~ Zoi

Her arms folded over her chest and she stared at him, “Then why are you here? Why do you want me to talk to you? What’s in it for you?” Not that she had anything to talk about. Right, suuuure, Dradvia.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

“Alleviate boredom,” Sisnil replied smoothly. And companionship. But he wasn’t going to admit that part. Without his twin he was lonely and had yet to really connect with anyone on the ship. David, the Commander, was alright but he was also the one that caught him and got him stuck here. “As for why I’m here, like I said, no choice. Nothing better to do, unless you know of a computer that needs broken into.”

~ Zoi

She started to laugh, but she got the feeling he was serious. Well she had been told the Wolverine took on more…Grey missions. She hadn’t been happy about that either, but orders were orders.

She shrugged again, “Sorry, I don’t know anything about computers that way, or our current mission. I can give you vaccines if they are put of date.” The lift came to a stop and opened on deck 6. “Maybe. I have to check now, I suppose I’ll have to eat later.” Then she stepped off the lift and the doors closed.
