David stepped off the turbolift onto Deck 7 a few minutes past 2400. He probably should be in bed, but it was relaxing to wander the lowest deck of the ship this late. Few crew members were down here normally, and it was even less during the night shift - even the lighting was dimmed slightly. It was nice to be able to spend some time outside his quarters just able to reflect and decompress from the day of Command - of course, before too long he’d head up a deck and get into bed.

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil stood against the wall near the holosuite, eyes closed. He looked tired, even more so than a few days ago when they’d had his meeting. He hadn’t noticed David, at least not right away. Then he heard the Commander’s footsteps and looked over. “Commander. What are you doing here this late?”

~ Zoi

David smiled slightly, his expression likewise exhausted. “Just wandering. It’s a good way to think before I sleep. How about you?” He quirked one eyebrow. “Have you been sleeping much?”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

No. But Sisnil simply shrugged. “Enough. It’s a little late for ‘before you sleep’. Don’t you have big, Starfleet Captainy things to do?”

~ Zoi

“I did them earlier, hence now being ‘before I sleep’. He yawned. “The paperwork’s the worst bit of the job.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

“Believe it or not, I had paperwork, too.” Sisnil said. “Not nearly as much. But I was never interested in Starfleet anyway.”

~ Zoi

“Why not?” David asked, genuinely curious. “There’s the red tape aspect, but you’re obviously competent and don’t have a problem with ships and space.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

“Not everyone has a high opinion of Starfleet and the Federation,” Sisnil replied. “Though, you are an odd one.”

~ Zoi

“Oh?” David asked. Much of the exhaustion in his voice and expression was beginning to fade, though he was still clearly tired. “What do you mean?”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

“You’re the only person I’ve known to shoot a man and then check if he’s okay,” Sisnil replied. His exhaustion did not change. As a doctor, David could probably tell he wasn’t sleeping well.

~ Zoi

“I’m not going to give up caring for someone just because in that moment they’re my enemy - I never intended to do you what harm I could avoid, and occasionally stunning can have some side effects, so it was the right thing to check you once you weren’t immediately a threat.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil regarded him with a mixed expression - cold, but curious, almost confused. “Mercy gets you killed. ‘Ought to learn that, working in intelligence.”

~ Zoi

“There is always a small risk that it’ll end up hurting me, but that’s well worth not compromising my morals over. I can act when I need to, but if I don’t need to, it’s worth showing that mercy.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

“Small in regular activity maybe,” Sisnil shrugged, “At the end of the day, it doesn’t concern me so long as it doesn’t put me at risk.” He looked at David, “So let’s hope it never comes to that, you mushy hearted softy.”

~ Zoi

David smiled. “So, you never answered. What are you doing down here? Not that it’s forbidden or anything.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil shrugged. “Standing. What does it look like?” He gestured towards David, “Clearly I’m not the only night owl.”

~ Zoi

“I just don’t sleep enough,” David joked. “I’ll be up in another 5 hours or so. But why down here?”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil shrugged. “The sounds of the engine, I suppose? The ship I’m accustomed to is considerably smaller than this one.”

~ Zoi

“That’s an accomplishment - the Brazen class is pretty small for a ship,” David noted. “Of course, it is still a Starfleet ship. If you’d like, you’re welcome to replicate a sleeping bag and spend a few nights in one of the storage rooms down here - they’re cramped, but if you rest better, I’m willing to grant that.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil smiled. “We fly on a forty year old cargo vessel.” He commented. Then he shook his head. “I won’t sleep better without-” he paused awkwardly, leaving out something he was going to say, and said instead, “something else.”

~ Zoi

“Well,” David said, “you should talk to Dr. Tessan and see what he says when you go for your physical and eval. It’s possible you may be able to be prescribed sedatives to at least help your body recover, if nothing else.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil glanced at David. “Physical? Eval? Do I look like a Starfleet officer? I’m not doing that.”

~ Zoi

“You are still a member of the crew - yes, you are. It’s for your own good, and it’s important info to have on hand.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil opened his mouth to deny it - but David was faster, insisting he was in fact, a member of this crew. He sensed David’s sincerity - the man really believed the crap he was spewing. “Why?” He asked suspiciously. “What would you possibly need to know?”

~ Zoi

“On the physical part, if you get hurt during a mission or fall ill, it tells us anything to be careful for, and lets us catch something that without that data we’d otherwise miss. Plus, you did lead a fairly dangerous life. Of course, you were treated after our altercation, but a second look never hurts. On the psych eval, not only does it help you be able to integrate into the crew and helps your physical health by not neglecting your mental health, but can help us as a command staff understand what approaches work best when working with you, - although it, like your medical information, remains confidential between you and the doctor except with your explicit consent, or, to a lesser degree, is available only on my authorization in a need-to-know situation, for example if your life was in danger, and even then only the pertinent parts would be revealed and nobody outside of myself and potentially my XO, Commander Claire, would learn it.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Sisnil flexed his fingers. “No offense, but I’d rather a bunch of random people not know the specifics of what my weaknesses might be. I’ve gone how many years in my ‘dangerous lifestyle’ without those things?”

~ Zoi

“I could order you to, but I’ll at least try to convince you,” David sighed. “That’s exactly why it’s important. Just because you can walk around with a piece of shrapnel in your leg doesn’t mean you should. And while I understand the vulnerability aspect, exactly one person will know unless something goes very wrong. And that person is an experienced, licensed professional that I think you’d like, personally.”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

“I don’t have shrapnel in my leg. Nor do I see why I, as a non-officer, should be inclined to follow your orders to do that.” Sisnil shrugged, “I may like him as a person, I don’t deny that.”
