Nerira was heading to the XO’s office. She had been summoned but no explanation had been given as to why she was needed. Approaching the door she noted the golden nameplate, the name “David Morris” neatly etched in black lettering on its surface. Seeing as she was normally left alone to do her own work she had the distinct feeling, like being summoned to the principals office, as she pushed the door chime.

“Come,” came the light voice inside, and the doors slid open with the acknowledgement to admit the engineer. At the other end of the cramped office, David sat behind his lightweight desk, typing away at the never-ending pile of paperwork that seemed to permeate his life. He looked up at his guest, and smiled. “Ms. Akanar, please sit down. Can I get you any refreshments?”

“No I’m ok,” Nerira replied,
“I just came from the mess hall. Was there something you needed of me Commander?” She continued, taking a seat opposite Morris.
“I haven’t done anything wrong, have I?” she asked slightly worried.

“No, not at all,” David laughed.

Nerira’s expression softened, relived that she hadn’t upset the commander. Her job as it was, currently at least, was entirely dependent on her ability to not piss off anyone that had more power than her.

“You’re here because I’ve just heard that our Chief Engineer has been called away on a personal emergency.”

“Oh… That’s not good to hear at all, I hope he is okay,” she said, concerned.

“To cut the small talk, you’re the best one down there to replace him. From your file and what I’ve heard, you’re smart and know your way around Engineering, and you have experience as a team lead. The only problem is that you aren’t an officer,” he continued, briefly glancing at his console.

After a moment, he spun the screen around to face her, having highlighted a specific part of her file, “But you were.”

Nerira blushed, flattered that everyone on board thought so highly of her, normally people just thought she got in the way on a ship, Hence why she usually operated from a starbase. “Well Thank you, I certainly try my best with the engineering systems, but I don’t know that I am your best candidate. I have such specialized experience that I worry that I may not have all of the necessary skill set. Plus It has been almost six years since I served in any official capacity much less a department head.” Looking slightly confused she continued, “I stepped away from the service because I felt that I could do more for world of science and engineering design if I was not held back by the regulations put in place to help Starfleet run as a large organization.”

“True, you’ve been away from official capacity for a while, but you’re still capable - you were Chief on the Constellation back then, after all. As far as regulations, we do of course follow them - this is a Starfleet ship, after all - but let’s just say we treat them a bit more flexibly. Having your specialized skills is an asset and we certainly can use that experience. Plus, as I understand it, the Wolverine has ended up as a haven for new beginnings and second chances over the years.”

He stood up, opening a drawer. “I took the liberty of clearing this with command. If you’re willing, I have permission to reinstate you as a commissioned Lieutenant,” he offered, holding out 2 gleaming pips. “So?”

“Alright, I’ll do it, as long as I’m able to maintain my position as mission specialist,” Nerira agreed, and accepted the pips.
