David crossed the mess hall floor, the sharp clacks of his footsteps a juxtaposition to his overall extremely relaxed demeanor. He took the last tray of snack food he’d replicated from the incredibly helpful NE, and set it out on an empty table. True to his counseling background, the XO had decided it was long past time to know and check in on everyone on the crew, and therefore had earlier today sent out an announcement that anyone off shift was more than welcome to join him in the mess hall for an informal gathering at 1800. And it was indeed 1800. He sat down near the entrance, waiting for his crewmates to gather.

Enter Zekk, donned in his crisp Starfleet uniform, embodying the demeanor of a seasoned crewmen despite his Ferengi heritage. Arriving ahead of schedule, he seized the opportunity to meet the executive officer before the hustle and bustle of the crew filled the room. “Commander Morris,” Zekk approached, trotting across the mess hall. “It is good to see you again, I hope you’re still not looking for payment after helping me the other day!”

Alita stepped into the mess hall laden with a snack tray of her own. Sure, the first officer could replicate whatever he so chose but she would always be the de facto ships cook and would come prepared as such. She saw the commander and the new Ferengi petty officer and approached with a smile.

“Hello gentlemen, hope you don’t mind if I just set this anywhere. I got the announcement about a meet and greet and just couldn’t resist. I don’t think I’ve met you thus far. My name is Alita Claire and I’m the ship’s Chief of Security.” she said by way of introduction to zach. Alita was dressed in off duty casual, jeans and red blouse with a daring neckline.

  • Alita, MO/COS

“Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Chief Claire,” Zekk smoothly interjected, his Ferengi charisma bubbling beneath the surface. “I’m Zekk, freshly aboard this vessel as your humble Operations specialist, and helmsman” he stated, injecting just a hint of self-importance into his tone. “And if I may say, those snacks you’ve laid out seem quite irresistible. A true testament to your culinary prowess, Chief. Are they… free?” His words were laced with flattery, a hallmark of his trading instincts kicking in as he navigated this new terrain of interacting with high-ranking females.

Alice walked into the room and scanned the landscape. The new guy was not hard to spot. Everyone was crowded around him making him welcome. It was not that Alice didn’t want to meet him. It was more that the booze tended to be top-shelf and not the synthahol stuff they tried to pass off as whiskey. Moving to the bar, Alice ordered a drink and waited. The new guy would break free in a minute or two and then she would meet him. Having a helmsman as your friend was a huge benefit especially when you wanted to get something on board without all the pesky questions associated with using the transporter.

Alice Spencer CSO

“Yes, the food is free. The friendship is free also. It’s really not that complicated here. Think of us as the family you’re going to get to know. Welcome aboard.”

Alita thought the prospect of having a Ferengi board was definitely interesting. It fit well with the ship, the livelier the better or something like that. She noticed Alice walk in out of the corner of her eye and thought that was an interesting prospect also.

Zekk couldn’t help but nod appreciatively at her words, though inwardly he found the notion of simplicity intriguing yet perplexing. “Indeed, Chief Claire,” he replied with a thoughtful look on his face. “A straightforward approach, at least on the surface, I can respect that. Though, I must admit, an civilisation that doesn’t fully appreciate the intricacies of an economic system does seem rather… complicated than simple, a monetary system makes sense. And Family often means entering into contracts, so I guess at least that is true with me Joining Starfleet.” He flashed a knowing smile, hoping to convey both his understanding and his unique perspective on the matter.

David nodded in assent, Alita beating him to the response. “Please take as much as you’d like,” he agreed. He slipped out of the growing crowd around Zekk, rather joining the science officer at the bar. “Lieutenant Spencer! I don’t think I’ve properly gotten to meet you. Glad you could make it!” He smiled. “I’m looking forward to getting to know you.”

“I think that every family among every race is different. Human families, mine most definitely, are full of contracts. They are subtle and social, not monetary as you would think most definitely not. It’s like you do this thing for me in 20 years from now I will owe you a favor, if not me then my child. Complicated right?”

Elita thought of her own crazy tiny whiny family and smiled. Her green eyes began to sparkle a bit as they usually did in times like this. Glancing down she picked up a nibble from the plate and she would thoughtfully.

“So, tell me about your family?”

  • Alita, MO/COS

“Ah, my family,” he began with a nostalgic but sad smile. “My father holds a prestigious role as a Ferengi exchange vault agent, a position of great importance endorsed by none other than the Grand Nagus himself. He is entrusted with overseeing the intricate workings of the latinum exchange and safeguarding the vaults where our most valuable assets were stored.”

“Then there are my brothers,” he continued, a hint of pride in his voice. “They’re off chasing adventures near Deep Space 3, always seeking new opportunities on the frontier. Each of them has carved their own path, but they share the Ferengi spirit of ambition and entrepreneurship.”

“And my mother,” Zekk’s expression softened as he spoke of her. “She’s the heart of our family, quite literally,” he chuckled. “She regurgitates the best jellied-gree worms you’ll ever taste. A true culinary artist, if you can believe it.”

Alita tried very very hard not to make a face. She may learn to jelly them herself, but there is no way in hell she would be regurgitating anything for this fine young Ferengi.

Remy walked into the lounge. He wasn’t aware that Alita had prepared a spread, but had smelled the food she had prepared from the corridor. He loved her cooking and had really appreciated her efforts to make the recipes she had received from Tanty Mattie’s cookbooks. Each time she made one, she was getting better at satisfying his desire for real Cajun food.

Stepping up to the buffet, he took in the delacies, looking for something in particular. After not seeing his favorite, he turned to Alita and exclaimed frustratedly, “Cher? I don’ see no beignets? ‘Ow can you make all dis an’ leave out de beignets?”

“What are de beignets” Zekk enquired curiously, the Captain accent difficult to understand “Is the ship’s universal translator broken?”

“0 they are one of the most delicious things I have ever learned to make. And they are this man, Remy Boudreaux’s, favorite things on the ship. Well perhaps one of his favorite things on the ship. Here, let me show you where I’ve hidden them.”

“Oui, jus’ ONE o’ my fav’rite tines on de ship,” Remy chirped in while giving Alita a wink.

Alita stood up and walked to the table she had prepared. Literally, she had brought her own table. Leaning down she pushed back a bit of tablecloth and lifted a small section of the table itself. Sliding out another small section of the table she revealed a compartment that held quite a bit of beignet, hot and steamy just the way they were supposed to be.

“As if I would ever forget them. You should know me better than that chere. Help yourself.”

  • Alita

Zekk scrutinized the beignets before him, their golden exteriors dusted with a generous layer of powdered sugar that glistened under the ambient light. Their pillowy insides exuded a tempting aroma, hinting at a delectable sweetness within. “They are edible?” he mused aloud, scepticism lacing his words as he cautiously reached for one. As he picked it up, the powdery coating left a residue on his fingertips, eliciting a slight grimace of distaste. However, his experiences with Huueman cuisine had taught him not to judge by appearance alone. With a tentative bite, the beignet yielded beneath his teeth, releasing a burst of warm, sugary flavour. Its texture was a delightful blend of crisp exterior and fluffy interior, leaving a lingering sensation of indulgence on his palate. Zekk’s initial hesitation gave way to a surprised appreciation as he savoured the unexpected pleasure of the Huueman delicacy, though, in the back of his mind, he couldn’t help but imagine how much better it would taste if it were stuffed with savoury tube grubs.

“Dey are delic-SHOUS, no?” Remy inquired.

Alita laughed and smiled. Obviously, they were definitely edible. She recalled her first several times making the damned things though.

“The first several batches of beignets I made we’re definitely not edible. I could have used them for bricks to build any type of primitive Hut you can imagine but, I figured it out. Glad you like.”

  • Ailta

He leaned toward Zekk abd in a conspiratory tone added, “We could ‘ave shot dem out de torpedo tubes an’ dey would ‘ave punched a ‘ole clean trough de ‘ull of a Cardassian Keldon class battleship.”
