David ran out of the turbolift, followed shortly after by a team arriving from sickbay. “Lieutenant, report,” he asked, accepting the medical tricorder handed to him and going to work on the nearest patient. “Any idea what caused these injuries?”

Lt. Cmdr David Morris, XO and outgoing CMO

“i’ve got a wounded Vulcan Captain, appears to have been wounded by some animal, but I was unable to determine what kind of animal it was.” Cel reported, “He was not apart of the team we were sent to locate.” He added as he helped the wounded vulcan off the shuttle.

-Cel
“Understood,” David noted, kneeling next to the captain and checking vitals. “How long would you guess he was injured for before you found him?”

Lt. Cmdr David Morris, XO and outgoing CMO

Rosa rushed around the corner, kneeling down across from David. She focused her attention on the patient. “Captain?” she inquired, firm and loud in her tone. An easy way to check the Vulcan’s reaction, and if he was still aware enough to know what’s going on.

<Dr. García, CMO>

The supposition that it was an animal, by Morris’ and Rosa’s estimations was a little iffy. It was a nasty jagged wound down his back but that was all it was and while it may have been a single bad claw or something there were no other injuries that would suggest a paw or something had done it. That would have been difficult to ascertain in the field, however, so that estimation was as good as any. The Vulcan had lost a lot of blood and was in shock - he was also quite unconscious. The identifier on him denoting him as a Captain was that he was wearing a Starfleet uniform.

One of the two other Vulcans who were there, the female, said, “He came into the camp on his own after climbing a short, steep cliff, then collapsed. I would estimate from his blood loss that his injury could not have been sustained past an hour before his finding the camp.”
- Wookiee
“Understood,” David stated. “Dr. García, let’s get him transported to sickbay. I don’t think it’s safe to move him by conventional means. And I’m not sure this was an animal - it could just as well have been a fall or even a bladed weapon. I’d like to talk with him once he’s awake and see what he can tell us - it may turn out to be important intelligence.”

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

=^= Dr.Garcia to sickbay, requesting emergency medical transport. Patient is male Vulcan, get a bed ready. =^=
She spoke with a sense of urgency out of habit, like a true battlefield medic. Pulling out her medkit, she was able to inject a simple coagulant compatible with most humanoids. If it worked it could save his life, and on the off chance it made his condition worse at least they were on their way to sickbay.

|Dr. García,
CMO/CNS|

The transport went smoothly and soon they were materializing in Sickbay. Orderly disorder being the order of business the Vulcan was soon on a biobed. The coagulant was compatible with him and helped him; soon his vitals were displayed along with a 3D image of the nasty cut. With further scans there were local biomatter present that may risk infection and some foreign matter along the deeper regions of the wound that will need extraction.
- Wookiee

“Nurse Rossi,” Dr.García ordered, directing her gaze toward one younger man in particular, ”I need a biopsy of the edge of the wound and a basic toxicology screening please. Look for anything that might react with our anesthetics or make it unsafe to operate.”

He nodded affirmatively. While the nurse was taking the samples, Dr.García prepped to disinfect the wound. If it was an animal wound, as reported, she wanted to be sure what she was dealing with. Venom, bacteria, viruses, all of these things that made dealing with these types of injuries complicated.

After the nurse was done she went over the wound with a disinfectant and focused on stabilizing his vitals. Rosa didn’t want to close him up just yet with that debris, but also didn’t want to operate until she was sure it was safe.

|Lt. García,
CMO/CNS|

With Dr. García having the treatment well in hand, David figured he wasn’t strictly necessary for the time being. That said, it was wise to stay nearby in case something went wrong or he woke up. So here he’d ended up, sitting in the CMO’s office beginning the paperwork for this patient. He kept one eye on the goings-about, as he’d gotten used to when this had been his office, but mostly figured that with the major danger averted, he could leave this in the hands of the actual CMO and not usurp her job.

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

OOC: You do have the two other Vulcan archaeologists there hanging about too :)

OOC: Ah - I’d figured they were minor injuries that had already been taken care of!

“I don’t believe we’ve officially met, Commander,” Rosa commented calmly while applying a respiration device to the still unconscious Vulcan, “But we’ll probably have more time for all of that later, huh? Can you stick around an help with the surgery? An extra eye or two always helps.”

|Dr. García,
CMO/CNS|
“Of course, Doctor,” David replied. “Wherever you need me.”

The tests ran did not show foreign biological matter or toxins. Were it an animal there would likely have been some, but there was a lack of that present in these tests.

As well, there were, in the wound traces of synthetic material of a fibrous nature. Some of it was his uniform tunic but some was not.

The Vulcan’s vitals were low. He had lost a lot of blood and shock had destabilized his system further. By all appearances he was certainly unconscious from that but there were signs that he was also in a kind of Vulcan healing state. The vitals were not going down but still they were not perceptively increasing either.
- Wookiee

Rosa made the necessary preparations for removing the foreign material, slightly relived to see signs of the patient stabilizing into a natural healing state. She began to extract the fragments it from the wound, starting with the smaller pieces and working from the outer edge inward. Another on the medical team working with her to close up the bleeding were the pieces were being removed. As each was removed they were set into a sample collection container so they could be analyzed afterwards. Dr. García tried to recall if she had seen something similar to these before, based off of her experience as a nurse and field medic during her years of service.

|Dr. García,
CMO/CNS|

The foreign matter was both of a synthetic plastic and metallic nature with some other fabric like pieces. From what was another story … the operation took some time with the niggly nature of it .. and was happily coming to an end when ..

David stepped over to one of the conscious Vulcans. “Can you recount the events leading up to his return with these injuries?”

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

The male Vulcan turned to David and raise a brow. “I am scientist S’kath and this is scientist T’Lae.” He paused to give effect that he thought it rude to suddenly interrogate before introductions. We returned back to our campsite from a survey at a lower level, only returning when the mists became too thick and dangerous to logically remain longer. When we arrived your people were in the encampment. It was only 8.3 minutes later when he appeared at the edge of the encampment and collapsed. We have never seen him before.”

At that moment the sickbay doors opened and Osa lead two others in. One was a short, squat alien that marked the description they had of the Kein species - one of the two who were sparring in the system - and a taller, dignified man with combed back dark hair and pronounced cheekbones and jaw.

At that moment there was an alarm at the operating table - the Vulcan’s vitals suddenly slumped. His heart had stopped!!!!

At that moment the man entering saw what happened and called out, “Captain!” ..
- Liv, Vulcans, David .. oh and Wookiee

David spun away from the two Vulcans at the alarm. Acting more on trained instinct than fully-fledged thought, he took running strides over to the operating table. “NE Laurens, I need a cardio-stimulator,” he stated urgently. He accepted the device as it was handed to him and began cardiac induction. “Do you know him, and do you know what may have injured him?” he asked the new visitors with a fraction of his attention, not looking away.

Executive Officer

Dr. García stepped back slightly to allow Commander Morris room to attempt resuscitation. She kept her focus on the biobed readings, changes in vitals and brainwave activity. And one eye, figuratively, on the clock.

|Dr. García,
CMO/CNS|

The man took some strides into the room to be stopped by a security crewman. He peered over the man’s shoulder at what was happening. “No!” he said. “He has a nanite controlled bio-gel pacemaker. The stimulator will short circuit it. He needs to have manual resuscitation!”

David stopped at the warning, barely in time, and began CPR, a bit unused to it but still confident in what he was doing.
After that outburst he said, “I’m Lt David Barclay, physician on the Pythagoras. The Captain, last I knew, was taking an escape pod to the surface after placing myself and Liv into a transporter memory cube.”
- David Barclay

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

David stayed where he was. The short Kein woman moved over to where he was and again took his hand. Unattended once more the two Vulcans stayed where they were, watching with interest.

Despite the efforts the Vulcan captain was not responding. “Ternal adrenaline hypo, 6mm,” David said. “Vulcan adrenaline accelerator.” His eyes flickered from the action to the overhead display of bio readings, grey eyes intent.
- David Barclay

“Hypo ready,” Dr. García replied, “Injecting 6mm now.”

Even if the adrenaline and CPR triggered an arrhythmia that was better than flat-line. She also had some sterile gauze ready, a simple but effective solution to keep any extra bleeding under control. Though the nurse had already sutured up any open wounds from removing the debris, CPR was hardly a gentle procedure to follow surgery.

“Mr. Barclay, if there is anything else we should know about his medical history now would be the time.”

While the commander continued, Dr. García examined the three-dimensional display. Zooming in on the heart region, looking for signs of damage to his pacemaker.

|Dr. García,
CMO/CNS|

The pacemaker was difficult to see as it had been bioengineered and barely discernable from the surrounding heart tissue. But, thanks to computer analysis, it zeroed in on it and ran a series of diagnostic readings next to it. Many of the readings were in yellow. “Yellow indicates it’s in standby,” David said. “If the adrenal injection works it should in essence cause the pacemaker to synch again.” He paused. “He has other minor health issues including a Vulcan form of asthma. Typical Vulcan disciplines have rendered it to be more of a mild nuisance but as he is not a young Vulcan it has sometimes become more pronounced when it acts up. He has with him or should have small strips of alensma corticosteroid which is placed just at the nostrils.” Barclay paused. “He has always compared it to earth horseradish.”

After what seemed a long time but was less than a minute the vitals suddenly made a jump and the heart meter sounded again on the display.
- Wookiee

David let out his breath as the heart meter flared to life. He stepped back to allow Dr. García access to reseal wounds and turned to Lt. Barclay. “Thank you for the warning. I’m David Morris, the XO. Is this Weena?” he asked, indicating the Kein. “I watched your log on the Pythagoras,” he noted by way of explanation.

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

David moved around the security stationed there and approached, reaching out his hand to shake it. “Very pleased to meet you, sir” he said, glancing toward the biobed and the low but stablizing vitals and then back again. “This is,” he said, gesturing her to approach with him. “It seems that it was rescuing her that attracted the Wis that resulted in our hurried evacuation. I still don’t know why we weren’t destroyed but I’ll not look a gift horse in the mouth.”
- Wookiee for Barclay

Dr. García continued work withe the patient as she overheard the conversation. She prepped the extracted debris for science in case they wanted to look at it later.

“Is it possible that we could find more survivors from your crew?” she asked, though she was prepared for the worst answer.

CMO/CNS|

Bump!

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

Once more, a bump!

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

“That I hope,” David said quietly. “Everyone else was beamed down but I don’t understand why they aren’t there, obvious. They were not transported far.” His shock, wearing off from this, he said again, “We beamed everyone down to a landing site that was above the mists. It was in the log for the site as Camp 12 Alpha. And you say nobody was found?”

“No one else has come through here. But, it is possible they are still on the planet, they may turn up later.” Rosa said, attempting to reassure him. Though she also realized the reality of the situation.

Several minutes had past and the CO was curious to what was going on down in Sickbay. =^= Commander Morris, do you have a status report on the personnel brought aboard?=^= Bryson asked.

Captain Bryson Erin
Commanding Officer
“=/\= Yes, sir,” David reported. “Two researchers from the planet, as well as the captain of the Pythagoras, Lt. Barclay - the CMO, and a Kein named Weena, who was mentioned in logs recovered from the ship. The captain is unconscious but stabilizing, the rest are conscious and in good condition.” =/\=

Lieutenant Commander David Morris
Executive Officer

Bryson made a low audible sigh of relief; their main concern was nearly taken care of. =^= Commander, when you have time, can you get a full report from the researchers, then call a Senior Staff meeting, so everyone can receive an update, Bridge out =^=.

The Captain had to applaud his XO for taking care of the situation in Sickbay while he made sure everyone returned to the Wolverine in one piece.

Captain Bryson Erin
Commanding Officer

The long lost Wookiee

Dr. García gave a nod to the Commander, acknowledging the Captain’s request for him to assemble a senior staff meeting. The patient was stable, for here the other medical staff could certainly handle it.
