“I’m David, or Dave if you prefer,” he said. “What would you like to talk about, Ekoagroh?” He took the seat next to the petty officer’s, and swung one leg over the other, leaning slightly in.

“I don’t know. I’ve never been good at starting conversations.” He started trying to think of topics but he was never good at this.

“Well, let’s start at the top, then. What drew you to Starfleet?” David asked, smiling gently. He understood the difficulty in conversation and small talk, and did his best to silently convey that understanding to the man across from him.

“I was always fascinated by starships when I was younger. I have a rather large collection of model ones at home.” He said, opening up now instead of waiting to do so and seeming distant. “I guess I just wanted an excuse to serve on one.”

“Fair enough,” David agreed. “What has been your experience so far in the fleet?” he asked conversationally, being careful not to come across as requesting credentials but merely asking the man’s opinions.

“Sometimes I wish I had joined as an officer instead of an enlisted, but then I look out the viewscreen when at the helm and realize how wrong I am.” He decided to sit back a little. “And I remember that I get to fly my favorite vehicle in the universe.”

David smiled. “I imagine that must be quite the feeling. When did you start flying?”

“I flew my first shuttle when I was 15. It was very exhilarating, especially since I was a teenager at the time.”

“Anything in particular that drew you to flying?” David asked, “and anything that almost drove you way from it?”

“Yes. My fascination with the skies and the stars, and seeing them from within instead of from outside. That, and I love the thrill of flying. To answer your second question, when I almost blew up on the side of a mountain when I was 17 nearly got me to quit altogether. My girlfriend at the time convinced me to try again about 4 months later.”

David smiled in reminiscence. “Mhm, having people around us to encourage us after failures is so important - and also my job, by the way, so please drop by if you ever need to. But I remember a lot of people like that around that age for me too. How did you learn to fly?”

“My friend and I decided to go to a flying class together when we were 15. We both loved it, although I loved it much more than he did. Around the time I nearly crashed, he decided to stop flying altogether as he was getting ready to go into manual labor. We’ve drifted apart since then.”

“That does tend to happen too, unfortunately,” David said. “But at least we make new friends after it does. How long have you flown starships?”

“I’ve been flying starships since eleven years ago. The thrill still excites me, you know?” He said, smiling a bit as he thought of it. “There’s just something about the helm that draws me to it like nothing else.”

“I definitely understand that,” David agreed. “Is there anything else you’d like to discuss, petty officer? I believe you’re cleared for duty otherwise.”

“Was wondering, what drew you yourself to be where you are? I’m sure most counselors aren’t asked their own questions.” He smiled and chuckled a little, but his question was sincere.

“It was mostly the work of Professor Larnin, back at the Academy. She took me aside as a cadet after having observed me and recommended I look into counseling, then helped me during my extra education in the field. I still sometimes contact her with problems I’m having trouble figuring out - within the bounds of confidentiality of course,” David said, chuckling at Ekoagroh’s remark as well.

He smiled. “It sounds like you two are great friends. How long have you known each other?” Ekoagroh was taking this opportunity to get to know David. He may have a hard hitting personality when he actually gets to work but in relatively informal settings, even those such as a mandated meeting with a counselor, he was rather the opposite.

“Since my second year at the Academy, so four years, I suppose,” David said. “And hopefully, many years farther into the future. Are you still in contact with anyone from your training?”

“Unfortunately no, I never really talked to anyone during training anyway. I was too focused on my work.” He said, a hint of remorse in his voice.

“It’s never too late to start,” David noted, smiling. “You can’t go back to what might have been but you can build connections with those around you now. And those connections will certainly benefit you in the future.”

“You’re probably right. I’ll certainly try to actually socialize this time.” Ekoagroh said, sitting back in his chair. He crossed one of his feet on top of the knee of the other leg.

“There are generally shipwide events every so often, that’s a good place to start,” David noted. “Or go to the mess hall and strike up a conversation with someone new.”
