T’Mor have finally come to realize that despite her scientific interest, she could not simply keep overrunning her quarters with plant specimens. She had accumulated quite that collection of sprouts of many different species. It was manageable while they were all still young seedlings. However, as all living things they grew over time. At this point they had overrun her storage space, overgrown her bedside trellis, and overflowed their pots on the table. It was to the point her bunk-mates insisted that something must be done.

To grow so attached to her specimens to insist that they must stay in her quarters was simply illogical. Though it would have been more efficient to dispose of the excess plants, it would have also been wasteful. So through word of mouth and private communications she has sent out a message through the ship: For the next 36 hours, the plants were available for relocation. Afterwards, the rest would be destroyed. Gleefully, her bunk-mate NE agreed to spend their recreational shift helping to “re-home” the plants. Though in return, T’Mor was now using her down-time to complete the same task.

James heard about T’mor’s dilemma, and figured he could help by taking a plant. But what kinds is she getting rid of? He needs a hearty one.

Ensign James black

James would have come in and seen a large variety of plants, all neatly separated into grey plastic cups labeled with their correct taxonomical names.Remaining were a few samples of genetically engineered catnip topped with purple and gold flowers, mixed varieties of succulents, a small collection of herbs like basil and mint, and some small crop-producing plants like sweet-pea and tomato. Upon seeing Ensign James, she thought for a moment. And then, picking up one of the cups, she approached him,

“Perhaps Pilea cadeirei ?” T’Mor suggested, “Drought resistant, low maintenance, and safe for most pets.”

(Bump to avoid AWOL)

James picked up the plant, liking that it’s low maintenance and is pet safe for spike. “Thanks T’Mor, for the plant I’ll take care of it.”

Ensign James black
“Your are welcome, Ensign,” T’Mor responded. This plant giveaway so far had been a success.

“It simply requires sufficient light and water. I also recommend pruning annually, and keeping note of it’s size. Pilea cadeirei has a very hardy root system, and may break through it’s container if it becomes to large.”

Alita had heard about T’Mor’s plant situation and decided it certainly wouldn’t hurt to see if she could supplement Alita’s herb garden. Space on the ship was so limited that she had to be very careful in how she allocated it.

Walking in, she looked around and waited for T’mor to finish with James.

  • Alita

Alita could have noticed that a small table had been set up next one of the lower bunks, labeled with a card that read “Herbs” Many of the samples were young, growing out of 3-inch containers. Like every other plant, each was labeled with a scientific name, however some had the distinct look and smell of peppermint, coriander, basil, and chamomile.

After T’Mor was done assisting Ensign Black, she approached Alita.

“Commander,” she greeted her with a respectful nod, “Do you require my assistance at this time?”

Alita smiled as she continued to look at the herbs.

“Well that depends on if you want to let me have most of these actually. I use a lot of them in cooking and tea every once in a while. You see basil, I see pesto. You see chamomile, I see my grandmother, Anna’s, favorite morning tea. Just let me know what you would like me to take off your hands.”

“Any specimens not removed will be disposed of.” T’Mor responded. As typical, she was trying to remain neutral in her expressions, even if she didn’t agree with the extremeness of her bunkmate’s request. Still, it was good that word about the situation was getting around.

“You may take as many as you wish, Commander.” she continued, while arranging the labels to be more visible as she talked, “They are not very popular, due to their care requirements compared to other specimens. My research often requires isolating the genes that produce certain ‘hardiness’ in botanical life forms. These are merely control samples to compare to the hybrids I am developing.” Though she wasn’t going to admit it to the commander, most of the herbal hybrids were disappointing. There was always something off about the aroma or flavor or texture, which is more important for herbs than standard crop plants. Still, there was likely no way Alita could sense that disappointment through her stoic demeanor.

“You seem to be familiar with these species, have you cared for them before?” T’Mor asked, looking back toward Alita.

Alita’s budding empathy was tickling the back of her skull. She had often wished for a guide in matters such as this but hadn’t found one yet. Perhaps this was something she could discuss with T’Mor at a later date.

“I do my fair share of gardening at my home on Earth, it’s kind of a family thing. I admit that there’s a lot that I’m not quite sure of so I’ll most definitely be calling my mother, or my grandmother, if I get stuck. For now, I guess I’ll just take all the herbs.”

Alita started carefully gathering the small pots.

“Would you mind stopping by for tea in a few days? I think I have something interesting to discuss with you but, not right now.”

  • Alita

“I will consider it, Commander,” T’Mor responded, “However, I have been very busy with my research as of late.” T’Mor averted her eyes slightly, as if a little nervous rejecting the offer.

“As I said before you are welcome to take them. I trust that they will be successfully cared for, given your experience.”

(OOC: I’m sorry I wasn’t able to tell you this earlier but T’Mor is transferring to the Ark Angel after this weekend. I just got everything settled recently. I’m very sorry as this seemed like it could have gone somewhere interesting! :( -Ava)

Alita picked up the last of the seedlings and carefully made her way form T’Mor’s quarters.
