The following was displayed on all consoles.

“Come one, come all, tot he annual Wolverine Christmas Party. Bring a big appetite and lots of good cheer. Warning, the punch may be spiked. The theme this year is silver and gold, uniforms not required.”

On the holodeck Alita had dove headlong into this project. It meant she didn’t have to think about all the strangeness and sadness she had experienced lately. It was hard to figure out a theme. Christmas in New Orleans was out without a lot more research to do it justice. She had thought about just taking them to the California house. Christmases there were always magical and sweet. Unfortunately the program wasn’t finished and her last memory of it was private and special. It could have been more special if she had just taken some initiative.

‘Oh but enough of that!’ she thought.

The event space was a large rectangle with a door down the middle of one of the sides. Directly across from it was a large Christmas tree laden with garlands and lights. As before, she had boxes of decorations for the crew to choose from. She wondered if Remy would remember the star she had given him last year but tried to move her thoughts on from that as well.

On the left end of the rectangular space was a large fireplace that crackled with life and, on the opposite end, was the buffet. The open space of the room was filled with groups of tables and places for dancing.

One of the people working on decor with her, probably Mimi, had hung an obscene amount of mistletoe. For the life of her, Alita couldn’t understand why. As Alita looked at it with a critical eye, she thought it might be a bit garish until she dimmed the lights and lit the candles which gave the whole place a twinkling effect.

Greve had found her way to the holodeck, although, she had not been so keen on dressing up. In fact, the most ‘Chrsitmas’ spirit she showed, was the gold and silver winter sweater she wore, and the small reindeer antlers she had in her hand, but was debating on whether or not to wear them. Of course, Greve was an Orion, and Christmas was not a holiday she was accustomed to. Although, that didn’t stop her from celebrating with those who did endeavour the holiday. Quietly, she glanced around the establishment, a sense of curosity about her gaze. It was beautiful, she couldn’t deny that.

Auzria, who had never been much of a partier, showed up simply for the hell of it. Recognizing the ‘theme,’ she went simple with it. Having pulled on silver-tinged blouse and golden stained earrings, she called it good. Brushing her hands against the white, slim jeans she wore, as if brushing off hair, a simple habit, she stepped on to the Holodeck, looking around. She caught sight of the doctor, but only gave a nod, searching for others and whoever had put on this party.

Ahearn arrived soon after. He was dressed in a sequined red suit that reflected the light and, set against his green skin, made him look like something out of a tacky Christmas catalog from the times of Earth’s mid-twentieth century. On his shoulder, he carried a large box. Various ribbons and bows peeked out of the top, and the sound of glass clinking came from inside. Looking at the assemblage, he said in his lilting Irish accent “So where do ya want these presents and party-favors, then?” and gave Alita a big smile. It seemed that the Chief Scientist was in something of a holiday spirit.

To the left of the large Christmas tree was a bay window lit with candles and a large poinsettia took up most of the lower half. Alita had just finished tying a silver bow on a wreath hanging from the top of the window. Jumping from the chair she’d been standing on she greeted her friends with wide smiles.

“Those can go on the circular table next to the buffet and my, don’t you look like a Christmas card…” she said smiling a bit at Ahern.

Ahearn smiled broadly and made his way over, setting the box down and then he began unloading more than a few wrapped gifts… and then came the bottles. Many, many bottles. All clear, with no label, holding a brown liquid and sealed with a cork stopped covered in a deep maroon colored wax. These he sat out on the table, and then reached into the box again and came up with small rocks glasses; each etched with a crew member’s name on one side and a profile of the ship with
‘Wolverine, NCC -99199’ under it.

In her mind, last year’s party was a bust. But this year, Ayla was in a different headspace. No longer new to the ship and still tiptoeing around her and Remy’s reunion, she had settled in here quite well. There were still questions about whether K’Mar’s block would really do the trick, but for now she was feeling more at ease.

Stepping into the space for Alita’s party, he Napean counsellor felt almost overdressed. Christmas was a holiday she knew about and had celebrated with many of her Human colleagues and her ex, Edward, when he had been inclined to. But she had no particular attachment to the holiday. That didn’t preclude her from getting dressed up for it though. Alita hadn’t specific the dress code other than ‘no uniforms’, but that left it wide open. So she opted for somewhere in the middle. She smoothed out the silver velvet dress that hugged her curves and fell to her knees loosely. With one long sleeve and the other shoulder bare, it was modest and yet fun and not too fancy. But where she might have overdone it was by wearing the somewhat extravagant emerald and diamond necklace that Remy had given her. With her curls pulled off her face in a slight twist, it sat prominently just below her collar bone.

Spotting Alita, Ayla smiled and moved over to her friend, reaching out to indicate she intended to giver her a hug but didn’t want to interrupt her conversation with Ahearn.

Ahearn smiled as the Counselor came in and stepped aside so the two could exchange greetings. Lifting up a bottle, he took out a small pen knife and began scoring the wax just below the top of the neck.

Alita smiled and embraced her friend.

“Lovely party, my friend,” Sharise said softly and sincerely.

“Love your necklace,” she whispered.

Ayla touched the gem-laden piece and flushed slightly. “Not too much?”

Now Alita didn’t feel quite so overdressed. She usually opted for casual clothing but had been trying to step out of her comfort zone in many ways lately.

This year she opted for an ankle length, emerald green, satin dress with a deeply rounded neckline, short sleeves, and a lace back. There were silver and gold beads and sequins placed at the neckline, waist, and ankles.

“The first person to tell me I look like a pretty little Christmas tree is going to meet my cast iron skillet.” she whispered before stepping back.

Ayla couldn’t help but laugh lightly. “You look lovely.”

Turning she smiled again.

“Welcome Azuria, welcome Doctor. Make yourselves at home and grab a plate. There’s food of all different kinds, lots of options for any dietary preferences. Oh, and if you don’t want to wear the antlers, feel free to put them on the tree.” she said smiling all around and stopping to eye Ahern’s bottles.

“I believe I will do just that. Thank you,” Greve smiled. “By the way, my name is Greve. I don’t believe you’ll be needing to call me ‘doctor’ around here.

Nodding to Alita, she headed for the tree, finding a place to hook the small band into its needles. Humming in satisfaction, she turned to head back to the others.

Turning to Ahrean, Ayla smiled. “And how you this evening Draddock?” she asked warmly. “You’re certainly very festive looking.”

Auzria was seemingly quiet, in comparison to those around her. Which, for anyone who knew her, was a rarity. However, she couldn’t say she knew the people very well, so she only smiled and nodded when she heard her name. Truly, to uncertain to say much. And, really, the whole idea of Christmas reminded her that she was lightyears from her daughter. Which meant, another Christmas spend split apart. Sighing, she brushed the thought away, adjusting the hoops that hung from her splotched ears.
