Baker cleared his throat as he hit the door chime to Lt. Claire’s office. New ship, new CO. He hoped he had a better relationship with this one than the last. But, from what he’d heard of the Wolverine, he had hopes his new CO would be quite admirable.

The door opened and a tall slender man in his mid- forties stood in the doorway. He wore the rank of LTjg and had a simple stoic expression on his face. He looked up and down the young man briefly.

“Can I help you Petty Officer?” He asked

Basil started slightly as the door opened before flashing the lieutenant a smile. “Basil Baker, sir,” He said extending a hand, “Tactical Specialist reporting for duty.” He looked past him to the office behind and said, “I’m supposed to be meeting with Lt. Claire? Is this her office?”

Alita had been so engrossed in several screens at once that Cel, in his knowing her so well, had just handled the situation. Glancing up, she smiled at both of them.

“Thanks Cel. Maybe we do phaser drills with this one in half an hour. Come on in Petty Officer.”

“Basil smiled and entered, “Thank you, Mam,” He said, his accent turning Ma’am to sound like palm, rather than Ma’am like ham. He stood at attention in front of her desk and said, “Petty Officer Basil Baker, Tactical Specialist, reporting for duty, Mam.” His Scottish accent gave a Shhing quality to his S’s as he spoke. He had dark black hair and a beard that matched and deep green eyes. He focused his attention to just above the Lieutenant’s head as he waited for her to speak.

Alita always appreciated the sense of decorum and formality new people usually had on the Wolverine. Most people in the security department had a running bet on how long that would last.

“At rest and take a seat. We don’t stand on formality so much here but, it is definitely appreciated. Welcome to the Wolverine. My interviews are quick because I like to learn about you by working with you. What made you decide to go tactical?”

Basil gave a nod and relaxed before taking a seat. “Well, Mam,” Basil began, “I’ve always been a rough sort, I suppose. So getting into a scrap never bothered me. I also want to defend those who need defending. My parents were both killed when I was younger. They died in Starfleet as security officers. They saved the away team at the cost of their lives. So I like to think I’m following in their footsteps.”

Alita had a sense he had been assigned to the right ship.

“I hope you are able to make a long career of it here. Tell mea bit about your academy days.” she said.
