Having gotten a physical out of the way was a good diversion for the big hurdle in any new posting: meeting your superior officer. Jamie trusted his skills as a chemist, and more so, as a scientist, but despite all that, it was impossible not to notice a lingering sense of unease building as he approached the Wolverine’s lab. Taking deep breaths, holding them for moments as he made his way to the door, he stopped before it, and entered when the door opened. That sense of unease is partially why he was looking forward to a posting like this, on the Wolverine, anyways. There’s no sense in fearing it, Jamie hoped.“Hello?” Jamie spoke as he entered, glancing about. His body tensed up, but just as quickly relaxed. For every lab accident he’s seen aboard a starship, he has to have experienced a thousand more moments of joy - and for as much as the moment felt turbulent, he was just happy to find ‘home’. His smile turned from one of uncertainty to one of confidence. He was ready. Probably.
Well, so long as he was able to find the Chief Scientific Officer, anyways.

“Hello!” Commander Erin exclaimed, jumping up from behind one of the lab tables. “I hope I didn’t frighten you, Ensign,” Bryson said as he made his way around the table.
The XO paused for a moment to receive a PaDD from a passing NE, then turned his attention back to the new officer. “You must be one of the new transfers?” Commander Erin asked.
The First Officer stopped about two feet from the Ensign before glancing at the PaDD he was given. “I think Lieutenant Rhodes gets on duty within the next 20 minutes, but you’re more than welcome to wait here.” Bryson looked up from his PaDD and gestured to an empty stool near one of the tables.
Erin (XO)
Just as the XO gestured to the empty stool, the door behind the new Officer slid open again and a tall man, slightly taller than the XO even walked in carrying a gym bag that had the collar of a Science Blue shirt sticking out of it.
Wearing the Wolverine exercise tank top exposed the man’s arms which, on the left, appeared to have a a tattooed sleeve in black shaded ink running from his shoulder down to below his elbow. A closer look might reveal that the images were all different animals from Earth that appeared to be emerging from smoke, and a more discerning eye might see that they were not all the same hand that had done the tattoo work. The higher work did in fact look slightly more faded than the lower.
Once he stepped through the door he paused, striking pale blue eyes moving over the two of them and his face expressionless, a light beard neatly and tidily trimmed. His pose was ramrod straight, shoulders squared but somehow he made it look normal and casual, as if this was him. Which of course, it was. Looking between the two of them, he said nothing at first, just lifted the cup of coffee his left hand held and then placed that gym bag on one of the Science benches to the side of the door.
“Good morning,” he said as the coffee cup dropped from his lips, his voice carrying the distinct clipped tone of an upper class Englishman. “Getting an early start are we, Commander?” He nodded to Bryson then looked at the new man. “You must be our new Science Officer, welcome to the Wolverine.”

Jamie quickly moved out of the way of the door, not settling into any seats so readily, given that he was in the presence of the CSO and the XO. He thought about it, about how much fear is an appropriate response for something as simple as reporting for duty. His conclusion was that he hadn’t earned the ability to be casual, yet. That was something that he had to work for, which he was certainly planning on, if all went to plan. All he could do was hope that that image became reality.
Bryson smiled and turned his head in the direction of the lab station he was just at. “I was on the Bridge earlier listening to Lieutenant Petrov and Warrant Officer Morieno going at it.” Commander Erin stated, turning back to the CSO. “I thought a little break from the children would do me some good, but once I got down here, I realized that I’m not a scientist and would probably end up devolving a poor Ensign,” Bryson explained.
“Oh, uh, hello, sirs.” Jamie stirred together a quick response, not wanting to dwell too much on his own words, which he kept plain and sterile, with nothing more to say than what he thought he should. On the other hand, his body was as rigid as a board, standing similarly straight, but likely on the opposite end of the comfort spectrum - he was statue-esque, and coupled with his relatively young appearance, it painted a wholly regular picture - just an officer trying to make a good first impression.
The XO awkwardly stood there in silence while the new officer went through the rigamarole of meeting his Department Head for the first time. Bryson was glad those days for him were over. The only person he needed to check in with was the Captain, and even then he’s known the man for almost 9 years.
“Thank you. I just got here, not long ago, sir,” Jamie nodded, smiling for just a moment. Suffice to say, Jamie was concerned most with staying within the lines, at least, as far as the ship’s functions go. He imagined that he’d have more than enough time to play scientist on a ship like this. But hearing a welcome from the superior officers definitely helped ease him up a little. And if the words helped a little, then actually being inside the actual science lab helped a lot. “Reporting for duty, sir,” he added, with a calmer, less frayed voice, one that struggled less to find the words he wanted.
He wondered if he’d get better under pressure, but it was too early to make any solid conclusions. Either way, he was definitely trying - that much was evident.

“At ease, Ensign,” Duncan smiled lightly and turned for his gym bag. “You’ll need to be relaxed in case one of the experiments that the Commander was fiddling with decides to explode or eat you.” While he reached for the bag and pulled the Science Blue tunic out of the opening, shaking it out and frowning at a crease that appeared to have formed from being caught in the zip a pair of tattooed wingtips could be seen on his back protruding over the top of the gym tank and finishing under his shoulders, although what the wingtips were attached to couldn’t be seen. Sliding the shirt over his head, he glanced at the XO and grinned.
