Remy had gone over the reports from the previous mission numerous times, looking for something to keep him from doing what he was about to do.

Finally, not finding any reason to hold off any longer, he set the Padd on his desk and tapped his comm badge.

Cel was sitting in his room, looking up at the ceiling. His eyes were closed, deep in thought.

‘Hannibal was out matched and out maneuvered at Zama.’ Squared stated in Cel’s mind. ‘Scipio knew his tactics, learned from his past battles and beat Hannibal. What else do you need to get that.’

‘Yes’ Cel thought back. ‘He did lose at Zama, but why did he lose at Zama? Look back farther, what lead Hannibal’s campaign to that battle? Political failure on behalf of the Carthaginian leaders. Lack of support back home. Hannibal lost the war when he failed to learn political lessons when he was still in Spain.’

=^=Ensign Thienna, please report to my ready room as soon as possible.=^

‘What could this be?’ Squared thought cautiously.

=^= On my way Captain.=^= Cel replied.

‘I don’t know, but this discussion about Hannibal isn’t over.’ Cel replied as he got into his uniform and left his quarters.

‘Maybe he is sending us back prison?’ Squared said sarcastically.

‘Maybe I should tell him about you, then I would be rid of your whining.’ Cel shot back in anger and frustration.

A few minutes later he arrived at the Captains ready room and pressed the chime.

-Cel

“Entre’”, came the command with the captain’s Cajun accent.

Remy indicated for Cel to sit in one of the empty chairs. As he did, Remy began. “I ‘ope you ‘ave recovered from de psychic attack, Ensign Thienna.”

Cel raised his eyebrow briefly at the word Ensign, but nodded his acknowledgement.

“De reason I called you in ‘ere is because I ‘ave gone over Lt. Claire’s security department report from dat mis-SHON, an’ i ‘ave to say I am a bit concerned. You ran off on you’ owm–no backup an’ no word of what you were doine. A bit reckless, np?”

He took a moment to consider. “A calculated risk.” He replied simply. “We needed information on what was approaching the town. We still had transporter access and, we needed to ensure that you and the townsfolk were protected.”

-Cel

Remy sat quietly for a moment, his intense dark brown eyes scrutinizing the junior officer before him. Finally, the intense look broke and he smiled slightly. “It was a calculated risk. . . .dat paid off, Cel,” Remy answered using the security officers first name.

“Needer the scientists nor colonists were aware of any sentient live on de planet. You were able to make first contact and in doing so, you saved de lives of dose beings. Congratulation, Lt. j.g. Thienna.”

The captain reached into a desk drawer and pulled out a small bos, opened it, and slid it across the table in Cel’s direction. Inside the box sat a brand new shiny gold and black collar pip. “You were instrumental in makine first contact in a situa-SHON dat could ‘ave turned out much worse.”
