Lily walked and sipped her coffee along with the rest of the crew from the Wolverine into the latest PD or professional development put on by SF HR titled You call yourself a Starfleet Officer, I call you an Intergalactic Rockstar. The week-long event was designed to build motivation and enthusiasm in the officer ranks teaching you confidence, integrity, empowerment, innovation, communication, and motivation. Starfleet felt it was so important that they flew the entire group to another planet for the event while the ship was in dry dock for routine repairs. The event was run by a perky little blonde by the name of Satie O’Riell. She was five-four and probably a buck twenty-five soaking wet. Her long blonde hair was pulled up in a ponytail that swayed with every step. Aside from her ever-present optimism and smile the most annoying thing about the woman was the high beat, bubble gum pop songs or drippy, sappy inspirational tunes blaring through the auditorium the second the pneumatic doors swished open. On the first day, the group was met with You are the Solar Wind Beneath my Nacelles sung by Rhett Midler. The only thing stopping the tactical retreat by the Wolverine crew was the bodies of the CO and XO who were bringing up the rear. The crew of the Wolverine excelled at everything they did. There was no crew that was better at their jobs however like all things. For as professional and exemplary as they could be, the crew also had a lot of fun and be as humorous as the next with tricks, pranks, and a lot of camaraderie on their downtime. Spinning on her heels, Lily looked at Remy, “Sir you have got to be kidding me. Are we really going in there,” she asked indicating the space behind her. Music was making her even cringe but not more than the balloons, decorations, and colorful banners stating You got this or UP UP and AWAY for Success
Grabbing her hip, she pulled out her communicator stating with full confidence, “there has got to be a medical emergency somewhere I am pretty sure that needs me.”
“As he reached out and took the communicator from her, Remy gave Lily as ‘tsk, tsk’ look, and slid her communicator in his pocket. “Jus’ to be safe, so you don’ try to sneak out.”
“You....you should really check that sir,” Lily grimaced and balled up her hands. “I am pretty positive I saw someone telling me they were going into cardiac arrest.” It was all a lie of course but she had to find a way to get the phone out of his back pocket. The humor on how she must have looked like a kid at the dinner table desperate for her phone was not lost on her. Nor did she care.
As if hearing the conversation between the Wolverine’s commanding officers and their crew, a spotlight as bright as the sun illuminated the group in the doors. It was so blinding that if anyone had been caught off guard looking directly at it they would at best be seeing spots or worse temporarily blinded.
“Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,” the song began to play accompanied by Satie’s vocals.
It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face“Welcome welcome,” Satie began to gesture to the group to enter the room. It was clear she was talking to the group at the door who might now appear to some more as a group of green cadets instead of the exceptional and battle-worn crew they were. It wasn’t often however they were verbally stalked and blinded by spotlights upon their innocent walking into a room.
“You don’t have to walk a step behind,” the song continued as Satie talked over the lyrics and at times used the lyrics as she spoke. Of course, as always in situations like this, there were at least a couple of groups that were eating it up. They happy chuckles and clapping only encouraged Satie O’Reill to keep her laser attention focused on the Wolverine crew at the door.
“Come come in,” Satie gestured in a long sweeping gesture in tune to the music.
Noting she was going to get nowhere with Remy, Lily turned her attention to the XO. “Sir,” she gestured, “I will lead by your example and walk a step behind you.”
“Bryson,” Lily looked at the XO. “You can not do this to us. Do something. I know what these people are like. They are just like the people from home and that is why I left. Tell them, Duncan,” she randomly whacked to her right trying to stage the first unofficial mutiny in the history of the Wolverine.
“These people are just like the people from home, and that’s why she left. There I told them Lily.” Duncan repeated her words in a flat monotone. “Hey does that mean they have cookies?” Duncan sounded almost excited now. “Cookies would make this way better. For all of you, I mean. “
Bryson merely shook his head. Certainly, he didn’t want to be here anymore than the Doctor, but he wasn’t going to let her wiggle her way out of this one. This was payback after Lily almost let him drown in Sickbay with a magical bucket and mop.
A beautiful face without a name for so long, the songs lyrics wafted through the auditorium only to be added to by Ms. O’Reill.
“But they have a name. They are the Wolverines. Grrrrr,” Satie made a growling sound and pawed the air like some deranged squirrel. “Get in here guys. Come on everyone give them a hand!”Lily Locksley and Satie O’Reill
“What in the blazes is she doing?” Duncan paused and looked at Satie performing her rabid squirrel act. “Did they get her from OMAP or something? One of those cancelled shows?” Duncan crossed his arms in front of him and dropped his forehead into his palm.
As the group made their way to their seats, the spotlight followed them bright and tight like a tractor beam. Satie continued a bizarre and maybe slightly disturbing impression of a Wolverine on stage growling and clawing at the air in time to the music.
Leaning over to Lily, Duncan whispered in her ear. “Hey, if she does that to the XO every time she walks past him or looks at him, we should arrange for her to get a raise.”
Remy indicated to his crew to continue on to their seats that had been assigned to them. Along with Bryson, he brought up the rear of group. Leaning over to his XO and adding just loud enough for Bryson to hear, he said, “So much for keepine a low profile, no? At least look like we are enjoying ourselves, Commander. Dis is supposed to be good fo’ morale, I t’ink more fo’ dere’s dan ours.”
“I’m not too sure about that, Captain.” Commander Erin chuckled, “By how Lily is acting, she might strangle O’Reill.” Bryson mentally noted to keep an eye on the mischievous Lieutenant from where he was seated. While he waited for the proceeding, the XO planted a nice smile on his face, even if his insides were feeling the opposite.
OOC: Love the references!! Lol!!
OOC: Thanks and for anyone that wants to join…this is supposed to be as painful as possible like most work HR events. Feel free to absolutely run with creativity and the ransom notes to Satie O’Reill. lol ~ KateBoudreaux (CO)
Erin
XOAs the crew’s bottom’s hit the seats, it was soon apparent the torment was not going to end so quickly. “Nelson Flatbottom,” a hand immediately was thrust between Bryson and Remy introducing himself. “I am captain of the Gnat.” The man had a smile indicating that unlike the rest of the people here, he and his over enthusiastic Xo wanted to be here.
“Captain Flatbottom,” Remy replied and acknowledged his counterpart.
“Benjamin Over,” the XO extended his hand just as enthusiastically as his boss. “Executive officer of the Gnat. Can you believe how lucky we were to get a spot at this conference? Our CMO barely got us registered. Who was responsible for you being here? Your doc or your counselor?”
“Dat would be two of my oder senior staff members,er, Lt. Dunn and Lt. Under, Mr. Over” Remy said with tongue in check. “Unfortunately, dey had to stay on de ship to run tings.”
OOC: I can make pop culture references too, Kate!!
Bryson returned the handshake and gave a fake, but authentic looking smile. “It appears our gracious Doctor signed our crew up for this ‘breathtaking’ event.” Surely the XO was going to have a few words with the Lieutenant about how to best appropriate the Wolverine’s medical budget.
Lily cringed and slide down slightly in her seat again feeling like a kid in school trying to avoid answering a question.
“And to think, I suggested Risa and Klingon Tai Chi,” Duncan shrugged and looked at Lily. “Yeah baby you were so right. That was such a dumb idea.”
The light did not turn off as the crew hit the seats. Instead it spun in blinding fashion on Remy as if he were the guest of honor. As before Satie smiled and sang while talking altering the song as needed.
Remy held up a hand to block out the glaring light shining in his eyes.
Did you ever know that you’re my hero
Mumbling under his breath, he replied, “I’d ‘ate to see ‘ow you treat you’ enemies, mam’selle.”
“Probably does that squirrel impression and rips out their throats,” Duncan muttered just loud enough for Remy to hear. “Then bedazzles their bodies.”
“What captain isn’t? We all see them as our heroes. Our leaders and dare I say…our father figure.” Holding the microphone she nodded in a sincere manner. Even though her words made her sound like she was crazy, it appeared Satie believed them to be true and heartfelt. This was only encouraged by a few in the large auditorium that hollered out responses like ‘of course’, ‘absolutely’ and ‘I agree.’ The more comments lobbed at Satie the more she seemed to feed off of them.
Leaning towards Remy now, Duncan looked at him seriously. “I am not calling you ‘daddy’, best you get is ‘Sir, sir.”
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle“Or a wolverine in this case am I right,” she laughed. A low ripple of laughter filled the room. It was not the laughter than came with a happy moment of humor. It was more the nervous laughter of someone trapped where they did not want to be and felt a sense of fear over coming them.
“Seriously, where did they find her?” The CSO shook his head slightly. “She is so familiar, I just can’t put my finger on it. Didn’t she host Blues Clues?”
“Captain Remy Bordreaux you are the wind beneath your crew’s wings. Did you know that? Did you,” she spoke in a clear and encouraging tone. “Because your crew does,” she signaled to the officers that accompanied him to the conference.
Remy tried to sit as she mentioned him again. . .
“Keep standing please,” she signaled to Remy with a hand motion for him to stay standing. “Remy Bordreaux graduated from the academy in 2384 as the top 10% of his class in tactics. He then went on to serve on the Radical, Saracen, and Olympic.” It was clear she had done her homework on the crew.
“Ohhhh, someone has a fan club!” Duncan laughed. “Do we get Remy stickers?”
“Remy Bordreaux,” she screamed his name out and held her arms above her head as if trying to encourage the room to clap even older than they had. The clapping was sporadic and hesitant. Not due to anything negative with Remy but more that the crowd was on edge no sure what was going on except for the crew of the USS Gnat seated directly behind each member of the Wolverine. They clapped soundly and voraciously with pure happiness.
Bryson played along and jokingly laughed at the Captain in his embarrassment. “My wings need a bit more wind, Cap!” The XO laughed, slapping his knee.
“Den I fart in you’ general direc-SHON, Bryson.”
It might have appeared to go unnoticed
“Bryson Erin,” she called out immediately signaling the XO. “You are not unnoticed.” She took a deep breath and sang the next lyric.
“Good girl,” Duncan nodded, looking at Lily. “Here comes that payrise.”
“Oh you have got to be kidding me....” Commander Erin muttered for only the CO to hear. Bryson sunk down in his chair to stay clear of the spotlight that was trying to find him.
Remy grabbed Bryson by the arm and pulled him to his feet and immediately sat down, covering his smirk with a hand.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it
The Wolverine would be nothing without you“Stand up Bryson. Come one. Let’s give him some encouragement,” Sadie began motioning the crowd to clap as the spotlight settled on the XO.
“You can do it!” Duncan called out in an odd, definitely not clipped English accent, pumping his fist in the air and joining in with the crew of the Gnat.
Bryson groaned but stood up to appease the lady. Trying his best to keep a professional composure, the Commander turned to wave at the crowd. He wanted this to be a dream, but he knew this was far from it.
