Lily walked and sipped her coffee along with the rest of the crew from the Wolverine into the latest PD or professional development put on by SF HR titled You call yourself a Starfleet Officer, I call you an Intergalactic Rockstar. The week-long event was designed to build motivation and enthusiasm in the officer ranks teaching you confidence, integrity, empowerment, innovation, communication, and motivation. Starfleet felt it was so important that they flew the entire group to another planet for the event while the ship was in dry dock for routine repairs. The event was run by a perky little blonde by the name of Satie O’Riell. She was five-four and probably a buck twenty-five soaking wet. Her long blonde hair was pulled up in a ponytail that swayed with every step. Aside from her ever-present optimism and smile the most annoying thing about the woman was the high beat, bubble gum pop songs or drippy, sappy inspirational tunes blaring through the auditorium the second the pneumatic doors swished open. On the first day, the group was met with You are the Solar Wind Beneath my Nacelles sung by Rhett Midler. The only thing stopping the tactical retreat by the Wolverine crew was the bodies of the CO and XO who were bringing up the rear. The crew of the Wolverine excelled at everything they did. There was no crew that was better at their jobs however like all things. For as professional and exemplary as they could be, the crew also had a lot of fun and be as humorous as the next with tricks, pranks, and a lot of camaraderie on their downtime. Spinning on her heels, Lily looked at Remy, “Sir you have got to be kidding me. Are we really going in there,” she asked indicating the space behind her. Music was making her even cringe but not more than the balloons, decorations, and colorful banners stating You got this or UP UP and AWAY for Success
Grabbing her hip, she pulled out her communicator stating with full confidence, “there has got to be a medical emergency somewhere I am pretty sure that needs me.”
“As he reached out and took the communicator from her, Remy gave Lily as ‘tsk, tsk’ look, and slid her communicator in his pocket. “Jus’ to be safe, so you don’ try to sneak out.”
As if hearing the conversation between the Wolverine’s commanding officers and their crew, a spotlight as bright as the sun illuminated the group in the doors. It was so blinding that if anyone had been caught off guard looking directly at it they would at best be seeing spots or worse temporarily blinded.
“Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,” the song began to play accompanied by Satie’s vocals.
It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face“Welcome welcome,” Satie began to gesture to the group to enter the room. It was clear she was talking to the group at the door who might now appear to some more as a group of green cadets instead of the exceptional and battle-worn crew they were. It wasn’t often however they were verbally stalked and blinded by spotlights upon their innocent walking into a room.
“You don’t have to walk a step behind,” the song continued as Satie talked over the lyrics and at times used the lyrics as she spoke. Of course, as always in situations like this, there were at least a couple of groups that were eating it up. They happy chuckles and clapping only encouraged Satie O’Reill to keep her laser attention focused on the Wolverine crew at the door.
“Bryson,” Lily looked at the XO. “You can not do this to us. Do something. I know what there people are like. They are just like the people from home and that is why I left. Tell them Duncan,” she randomly whacked to her right trying to stage the first unofficial mutiny in the history of the Wolverine.
Bryson merely shook his head. Certainly, he didn’t want to be here anymore than the Doctor, but he wasn’t going to let her wiggle her way out of this one. This was payback after Lily almost let him drown in Sickbay with a magical bucket and mop.
A beautiful face without a name for so long, the songs lyrics wafted through the auditorium only to be added to by Ms. O’Reill.
“But they have a name. They are the Wolverines. Grrrrr,” Satie made a growling sound and pawed the air like some deranged squirrel. “Get in here guys. Come on everyone give them a hand!”Lily Locksley and Satie O’Reill
Remy indicated to his crew to continue on to their seats that had been assigned to them. Along with Bryson, he brought up the rear of group. Leaning over to his XO and adding just loud enough for Bryson to hear, he said, “So much for keepine a low profile, no? At least look like we are enjoying ourselves, Commander. Dis is supposed to be good fo’ morale, I t’ink more fo’ dere’s dan ours.”
“I’m not too sure about that, Captain.” Commander Erin chuckled, “By how Lily is acting, she might strangle O’Reill.” Bryson mentally noted to keep an eye on the mischievous Lieutenant from where he was seated. While he waited for the proceeding, the XO planted a nice smile on his face, even if his insides were feeling the opposite.
