“Understandable. The transition does impact the psyche, so I do doubt this will be the last you see of me.” She smiled over at the CNS, knowing better than to start things of raggedly. After all, she very much doubted that they would be too estranged from each other, at least until the year was up. And after that, the generalized ‘see you around,’ may come into play. At her question, Greve seemed a bit stuck for an answer. “You likely ask that question to everyone that comes through this door, in one way or another. In listening to their responses, it is easily possible for you to forget yourself and your own progress, or perhaps, lack thereof. No prompt, truly, beyond consideration and curiosity.”

Ayla smiled genuinely. “Yes, it is possible, even for an experienced therapist like myself. We’ll talk more about this after the formal part of your eval is done, but I went through my own difficult transition before coming to this ship. And yes I will ask that question of others. Some come here focused on the present and future and forget that everything that has come before has shaped them into the person they are. It doesn’t mean one should dwell on the past, but it’s worth reflection so you can appreciate where you are in the moment.”

She leaned forward slightly, her gaze becoming slightly more intense. “I see a courageous and strong person before me, Shaidi. The courage to be who you are and take whatever comes with it is one of the most brave actions a person can take. Some are under the misguided notion that bravery is found in danger and placing themselves before it, but I will take your kind of courage every time. Because it’s lasting. So on a ship designed for battle and that will see its share, I want you to remember that and that I see you. And I look forward to getting to know the person you are.” They weren’t jus words but heartfelt declarations. Sharise had spent years working with people who hid who they were, often behind their uniform, and it was refreshing to find anyone who did the opposite.

Greve wholeheartedly believed the only way to cure oneself, was to embrace the issue. It one could not learn to accept and move on, they would be forever inhibited by the constant cycle of fear and regret in doing so. It was damaging to the mind and even to the body, which she understood perhaps a bit more than a common person, being a physician, herself. She pitied those incapable of accepting who they were, only barely knowing what hardships they must face in a path that may or may not have been their own. It was never fair, for those people to feel the need to hide themselves in plain sight and it was saddening, simply to know someone felt the need to turn away from who they were, feeling uncomfortable in being.. real.

“Courage seems a common trait for a ship like this.. the courage to remain where you have been assigned; the courage to come back from any misdeed you may have committed; the courage to allow yourself another day, when the feeling of helplessness can so easily consume you; the courage to do your job, even if you don’t find yourself worthy of it. This ship is full of courageous people, whether they believe in themselves enough to be outwardly courageous, or whether they are quiet and skeptical, finding themselves to be inwardly so.” Greve appreciated her words, judging by the soft, green lipped smile thatfollowed them. “Thank you, Counselor. I look forwards to fully meeting you, as well.”
