Bernard loved the smell of engineering. He must have been standing in the doorway for too long because another ensign was staring at him. Walking into engineering he was looking around in awe. This was his first posting since he graduated from the academy.

“Excuse me Ensign, can you point me in the direction of the Chief?”

“The Chief is in Transporter Room 1, he’s dealing with a major problem, so I’ve heard,” said the NE.

GM

“Thanks, I guess I will stick around here till he shows up. Is there anything I can help with around here till he returns? I wouldn’t want to bother him with a routine check in if he’s dealing with something important.”

OOC: This was supposed to be alt time line before the sim.

OOC: Well with my magic wand I just waved it is now in an alt time line before the sim. In this time line the CE is in Main Engineering looking over an inductor coil that failed and was removed for inspection.
IC:

“You.” Petrov called out to the new engineer who had come in. He waved the man over.

The coil in front of him appeared fine. No obvious overheating marks or obvious fractures. However the reading showed a quantum fissure along the induction path. Unfortunately for most you really had to notice the quantum irregularity as a vibration on a level almost untraceable. In other words most engineers would not find the problem.

“”Figure this out.” The CE told the new Engineer but remained to see if he could.

Bernard was ever so slightly perturbed until he noticed the pips on the uniform. Turning the coil around in his hands he then pulled out his engineering tricorder modified to his liking. At first he didn’t even see that something was wrong. Then a spark of remembrance popped into his brain. He remembered that his professor showed him once that if you set a tricorder to a harmonic resonance scan you can then pickup the faintest of cracks. He set the coil down on the desk in front of him and changed a few settings on the tricorder. It beeped with the affirmation of a quantum crack within the coil.

“Well Sir it would appear as though a quantum crack has formed within the coil. But according to Star Fleet regs the coil should still be functional until a micro fissure forms. At which case the redundant system wold pickup the load and notify us of the issue.”

Fresh out of the academy

Petrov said nothing at first. He had a reason. One was to figure out how able the new engineer was. The second was to see if the man could develop into an asset he could use to make himself look better or a threat to his preeminent position as the best engineer on the ship. He decided at this time he could use him as an asset.

“Very good engineer…what’s your name?” He suddenly asked not knowing who the man was.

“Ensign Summers, Bernard Summers sir.”

“Ok Summers your the third engineer to look at this and no one else found the issue. Your now alpha team leader and report to me.” He said and suddenly tossed the coil into the air. He cared less if summers could catch it or not. If he caught it then he showed responsiveness and if not then slow movements and weakness. Petrov walked away to his office as the coil continued its downward descent.

Bernard was supprised when he was now suddenly Alpha team lead. So much so that when the coil was tossed he nearly missed catching it. Instead it fumbled about in his hands a few times before he finnaly got a firm grasp of it. “I got it!” he said aloud.

He then took a seat at the nearby work station thinking about what exactly it means being the alpha team lead. Besides it being the first shift, he really had no idea about what it all entailed other than to keep the ship running no matter what.

Walking back towards Petrov’s office he brought the coil with him. “Sir, I’m sure there is someone here with more experience who would be more fitted for the position. I have just recently graduated from the academy.”

ENS - Summers - ENG

“Would you prefer a recommendation from an experienced CE that your unfit for duty and busted back to the Academy? Figure it out. Ineed people who can solve problems and your the only one who did that this morning. I am sure you can remember the lessons on leadership. Check the status board for what needs to be done today and get it done.” Petrov said all in a hurried and not so nice tone.
