Ayla nodded. “Well, for all intents and purposes, you are. But you have your experiences. It’s not a brand new start like you once had, but it’s a start. Sometimes, that’s all you need.” She considered him for a moment. “When you feel that restriction, like you can’t really start again, what emotion comes up?”Lt. Sharise, CNS
“Disappointment, I guess. I had a bright career a head of me. Now I’ll be lucky to make it to back to my old rank before I am forced into retirement.” He replied with a slight sigh.

She studied him for a moment with the same sort of intensity that she seemed to have in his presence. “Well, I suppose if that’s what you’ve decided, then that must be what will happen.” Perhaps it sounded a bit cold or even harsh, and it might even sound strange coming from her, but she said with entirely with a straight expression.

Celador raised in surprise at her comment. “Do you honestly think, that someone who spent 20 years in prison for murder, and after release, is reduced down to a 45 year old ensign, is going to be able to ascend to the rank of Captain and command his own ship before mandatory retirement?” He asked in disbelief, combined with slight anger.

She regarded him coolly. “Well, given that Humans in this century live to be one hundred and twenty years old easily, you’re not even middle aged yet Celador. I think you underestimate what you can and cannot do in a lifetime.” Ayla knew that if he decided that he had limits, then there was very little she could do to persuade him otherwise. But he wasn’t at the point of no return yet.

“But what about my background? Some people think I’m crazy, insane or some sort of pychopath. Doesn’t look good when applying for security clearance.” He pointed out.

Ayla simply shrugged and gazed at him intently. “Prove them wrong. You’re hardly the first person who has gone astray and been working to find their way. You are only limited by these constraints if you decide you are.” She leaned forward slightly. “I’m not saying it’s all in your head or that the constraints aren’t real, but there are ways to work past them. But only if you want to. It might not be easy, but you may find the effort worthwhile.”

Celador thought for a moment, then shrugged. “Maybe, time will tell. I could die tomorrow and this will all be a moot point. So, ” He smiled curiously. “Is there anything you want to talk about?”
