Sural was not precisely in Engineering yet. He had risen and had been meditating prior to the start of his shift. He had the ‘holopaper’ set to be able to open the dark teak like door to the small porch. While he couldn’t enter it obviously, he could sit in front of it and overlook the coppery dunes laced with faint colors of blue from the particles of minerals swept along by the winds.

=^= Crawford to Lt Sural. Sorry to disturb you sir, but Winston Hillchurch has reported an issue of a possible .. criminal act. He didn’t say it but implied a possible murder in one of the Jeffries Tubes =^= He gave the location of it. =^= Security is present. =^=

Sural’s brow rose. His first thought was ‘who’? =^= Do we know who the victim is? =^= Sural asked. =^= Initiate a log of all Jeffries Tube accesses over the course of the Gamma shift. I believe Ensign Hillchurch was conducting turbolift diagnostics. Pull his information as well to log lift accesses and commands. This may be helpful for Security to narrow who was about at that time. Filter the results as well to the three decks around the murder. I will be down presently and will review the results then. =^=

Crawford replied =^= I’m about to do a roll call for the Engineering crews to see if anyone is missing. =^=

=^= Very good, Lt. Brief me when I arrive. Sural out =^= With that, Sural rose and began to dress in his uniform from his traditional meditation robes.

——————————————————————————————-

Meanwhile in Engineering .. Lt Crawford closed off the comms and wiped his face. “Swell,” he said. “Nothing ever happens at the ‘beginning’ of a shift. “Gerry! Replicate me a rakdajino.. I’m not getting to bed anytime soon.” Nor will he be reading his Zane Grey novel before bed today. =^= Computer, prepare a report of all Jeffries Tube access for the past 8 hours, as well as turbolift command and entry. And, send out a comms check for a roll call of all Engineering persons on Gamma shift. And … Alpha shift excepting the chief. =^= He nodded as Gerry brought the sludge of coffee that was as thick as cough syrup. He took a sip and stared at the console. Best be safe on the roll call. It was getting near the Alpha shift. He always preferred Gamma. Usually it was quiet. They may run a lot of checks and get out and ‘fix’ things but hey, that was engineering and one could learn a lot of the ship on this shift.

Sural and Reno Crawford

The computer chirped and began to compile a report on the nearest screen. Personnel who came and went as well as turbolift logs printed nearly into rows and timestamps. The list of each was rather long during that far of a time frame.

-GM

Reno leaned on the console, his chin in his palm, fingers tapping at his lower lip as he scanned the data. Now and again he took a sip from the sludge that the Klingons enjoyed so much. Seemed more like his mothers’ soup now that he thought of it. When the lists were compiled he set the mug down. It wasn’t in the volume of the data that really mattered. It was how they filtered it that was the important thing.

=^= Computer, narrow Tube access to five decks above and below 15G, including that deck. Compare access with duty rosters to indicate any accesses which were a deviation from the roster. Correlate the above two searches with the Turbolift access. Who exited on those decks. =^=

He took another sip and glanced over. Who had and, more importantly, who had not reported in on the roll call.

Reno for Sural

He was soon interrupted again.
=^= Hillchurch to Engineering. =^=
Reno replied. He was impressed with himself; the coffee must be kicking in. =^= Crawford here. What do you need Winston? =^=
=^= Did our transporters just fire? The bo-body just got transported out. Can we ch-check the pattern buffers for an ID? =^=
=^= Winston, what is going on down there? =^= Reno asked, his southern accent taking over some. He felt blind and he didn’t like that at all.
=^= I don’t know =^= Winston said softly. He sounded nervous.
=^= Stand by. I’ll check. =^=

“Hang in there Winston,” he said as he brought up transporter control records. They weren’t exactly anywhere near anywhere so it should be pretty sparse.
“Report, Mr Crawford,” said Sural as he entered, accompanied by a growl of his stomach. He had not eaten yet.
“Sir, we’re logging turbolift and tube traffic, and doing a roll call of two shifts of Engineers. I’m just trying to glean anything out of that. And Ensign Hillchurch just reported a transporter whisked away the body. I was just checking on that now.”
Sural considered that. “Very good. Shut down all transporters except for command/department head authorization along with the proper code authorization. Let me know what you have on the transporter information. If necessary employ the transporter chief on this. Mr Portier should be on duty very shortly if not already. As for the data, do a reverse time analysis of the turbolift and Tube access starting from when you were informed of any issue. Create a short list of names for myself and the security chief.”
“Aye sir,” Reno said, happy that someone else was there to make the decisions. He bent to the task of determining the transporter activity.

Sural, meanwhile, reported to the bridge. =^= Sural to bridge. We have had information that there was unauthorized use of the transporters, or at least a transporter employed. I have authorized the transporters to be locked down to all but department head or command staff. We are investigating the transporter and other access data at this time. Do you have any further orders? =^=

Sural, CE

From the bridge came the XO’s reply.

=^=Confirmed, Lt. We just had an alarm signal go off up here. Did someone beam in, because there’s nothing within transporter range to do so, and if somebody beamed out, well, there’s nowhere to go.=^=

=^= The visual report was that the victim was beamed out. Stand by for further details. Perhaps it would be prudent to raise shields. That should prevent further attempts to beam in or out from an outside source =^= Unless they had better or different technology, but that bridge could be crossed when they came to it.

Sural would her D’vash order a sensor sweep, and then return.

=^=Sural, alert security. I want a pair of guards stationed in each transporter room, even if they are locked down, someone may still try to use them. Let me know ASAP if it was one of our transporters.=^=

Odinson (XO)

=^= Acknowledged, sir. =^= he said.

Sural glanced over to Reno and lifted a brow as if to say, ‘Anything?’. Reno, on his side was doing a transporter by transporter check for activity. “Working on it, Chief.”

While Reno was ‘working on it’, Sural tapped his badge. =^= Sural to Lt Oberon. The bridge has issued a .. request .. to have two security guards placed at each transporter room. I might advise to include the four cargo bay transporters as well. =^= He did a mental calculation. Ten transporter rooms, two emergency transporters would make 24, plus an additional 8 for the cargo rooms. They are typically set for bulk cargo and not ‘people’ but, like many things, they can be adapted.

Sural & Reno

The files showing the logs for the transporter usage had been buried deep and encrypted once. Once the encryption was broken it showed that the body had been placed in the pattern buffer and then purged through the plasma vents in the nacelles, thoroughly destroying the body as evidence. The logs had also been erased but kept a signature from an ensign in the Botany department.

-GM

Reno whistled and shook his head in appreciation. “Cowboy, you are good,” he said, working at the encryption. This was waking him up, or the coffee. Or both. But the gamma shift lead was excited by the mystery at hand. Until he pondered whether he knew the person who had been killed. After all, the ship was a small city but not that big. And everyone in a town knew everyone, or at least knew of a person who knew another, and so on.

Sural had gone to study some readouts and the reports that had been made while Mr Crawford was checking the transporters. “No matter which way he looked at them he couldn’t see a pattern emerge. There was no starting point, but he hoped there may be soon to follow any lead.

“Got it!” Reno called over. “Kinda.” He qualified. “I have the identity of the user, an ensign from Botany, but whoever did it covered their tracks better than a rattler on stone. Body is plum gone.”

“Do you have a name of this individual?” Sural inquired. They could then work at it further. Botany?

Sural & Reno

OOC: In understanding your post, I took it to being that the perpetrator on the logs was the Botanist, and the person incinerated was the victim. Correct me if i got that wrong there … Gene

Ooc: yes, victim was shredded by transporter to dispatch the evidence.

IC: The logs showed the name of an Ensign James Gully. Service number: 6193-243. Science Department, sub department of Botany. Personnel file showed him as a 2 and quarter meter height individual with dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes with Medium skin tone. Multiple counselor notes would show him to be a tremendous flirt among the younger female staff. Known for going to other department after shift hours to try and woo females coming off shift.

-GM

=^=Wait, you said victim. Victim of what? What’s going on, Sural?=^=

OOC: As far as I remember, no one let the XO know of the dead body. That is, unless I missed it somewhere.

Odinson (XO)

Sural composed himself and reported, standing straight as he spoke. =^= Sir, my apologies. Ensign Hillchurch came across the security chief at jeffries tube 15B. She indicated that there was a body inside. Mr Hillchurch did not see the body, but a transporter effect did occur that, according to the security chief, transported the body away. We have been conducting a roll call of the engineering group and logging accesses to the lifts and tubes, as well as transporter records. =^= He took a breath as Reno waved him over and pointed to the screen. Sural read over his shoulder. =^= According to transporter logs, which had been encrypted, the victim was in the science group, a Botanist by the name of James Gully. My assessment is that he had been transported from tube 15B and his pattern eliminated. =^= There was more to it than that but that was the boiled down essence.

“Report this news to the security chief and chief science officer,” he said quietly to Reno. He nodded and leaned into the comms. This was getting better than one of his Zane Grey novels!

Sural, CE

=^=Has Captain Thorne been notified yet?=^=

As he was listening to Sural, he was, at the same time accessing the file of one James Gully, botanist. =^=Thank you, Lt.=^=

Odinson (XO-leaving the bridge and heading to deck 7)

OOC: access to transporters were by fully. Not victim.
-GM

OOC: Er … um, Vulcan blush .. e-mailed you there ..
IC:

Reno groaned and took a long drink of his sludge. “Uh, Chief, might have collared the wrong dog.”
Sural lifted a brow. “I was unaware you had a dog, Ensign.”
“Actually I do,” he said, then, “Ran this again. Transporter logs say it was Gilly who was operating the transporter, not who was killed. Uh, I think. The decryption analogue was not perfect.” Well, good excuse as any. “Checking again to confirm.”
