“Half of them, their mothers died in cage birth, they think that’s normal. I guess I should explain, cage birth is what we call it when the conditions get to a mother, but her will made her baby survive. Probably happening upstairs right now. Maybe your medicine can save her. We never got a chance to try that.”

“Enough about the New Empire. Those replicators. Are they common outside of starships? We grew up in a home without them. Not because we were poor. We owned a restaurant. We all knew how to cook.”

-Matrix

Sathut dipped his head sadly to hear about this ‘cage birth’ that the young Romulan spoke of. He perked up a little more at the question about replicators. “In some places and on some worlds. Where I grew up, they were used for the creation of material objects, but all of our food was grown naturally. In some communities on Earth, all the food is replicated. It varies.”

Sathut, CNS

“It was much the same at home. It’s funny to me how two such large societies can hate each other so much but be so similar. In school, the Federation was blamed for every time we came into conflict. And yet… we can have a completely civil conversation.”

-Matrix

“Perhaps they fear the implications of the similarities. Humans are an imperfect race, and have some inherent vices. They pretend perfection and yet continue to struggle with their problems. Romulans, as far as I can tell, can be much the same.”

Pretha smiled. “There is plenty and I am sure he will desire it warm and fresh. How about we get you something more. It seems you could use a break. Perhaps a stimulant drink to help you stay awake? Or even a more relaxing substance you help you sleep? You are safe here and if the boy wakes, I will see to it, personally, that he gets food.” If she couldn’t get the tray from him, she’d have to resort to deeper scanning on a closer, more personal, level. Something she didn’t want to do if she didn’t have to. But she also had to think of everyone. Not just those in the bay, but the rest of the ship as well. Martyrs and fanatics were the worst. They were unpredictable and one was never sure what gesture, word, or action would set off a chain reaction that was unstoppable.

Pretha

“You… are right. Let me check while this is warm if he is awake. If he’s fallen asleep, I’ll get him a fresh plate when he wakes up.” He picked up the plate and walked over to the boy. He set the covered dish down near the boy’s head and said something quietly. Probably the child’s name. When he didn’t stir, the Romulan returned with the plate and said. “Looks like he’ll get a full, fresh plate. I hope he doesn’t get sick overeating.” The man smiled disarmingly. “A problem I’m delighted to have. I have to ask-“ He looked at Pretha’s rank pips. “lieutenant, why the interest in a maths teacher’s plate?”

-Matrix

Sathut glanced around and, seeing the children laying on the ground, stood up. “I am going to see if I can procure some more comfortable arrangements for these children. In the meantime, would you gather up any trays of finished food and place them back on the Replicator to be returned to energy?”

Sathut

Eris nodded. He looked at his younger brother who was slowly eating. “Finish your dinner Hirael. Before it’s time for breakfast.” Then he made his way around gathering up plates. Both those that were empty.and those next to kids already asleep.

-Matrix

A general announcement was made that Rhaelara had given birth to a baby boy who she had named Ecurai.

=/\=Sickbay to Cargo Bay. Could please locate a Doctor Meinok and escort him to Sickbay. He should be among our Romulan guests.=/\=

The man in front of Pretha said “That’s me. I suppose Rhaelara wants me to see the baby.” A security NE nodded for him to follow. “Lt Cmdr’s orders” he whispered to Pretha.

The two left. But Dr Meinok left his tray behind.

-Matrix

Lifting the lid of the tray would reveal a plate too clean to have ever contained food.

-Matrix

Pretha frowned and took up the tray. Something troubled her. Moving away from everyone, she set the tray on the console by the door and taped out a query to the computer.

Locate sources of element previously monitored ((forgot what it was and it’s been snipped lol)). <<

If it was still in the room, that was good. But, her heart sank… if it was gone and moving down the hallways now…

Pretha
CoS

The base elements being carbon, oxygen, and chlorine, they were hard to trace. They were too common to be placed at a single source. The computer started running a search for compounds comprised of the three elements.

As the search continued, a science officer appeared next to Pretha. “Lt Oberon? I’m Ensign Reid. Well, actually Dr Reid. I’m not a medical doctor, they’re Ph.Ds. I’m with the science department. I was just consulting with Dr Harding. Um. I think, I’m fairly certain, that someone onboard has manufactured phosgene gas. Or at least the makings of it.” He showed Pretha a PaDD with the chemical makeup and dispersal methods of Phosgene. It seemed to be aerosol primarily based.

-Matrix

“Phosgene....” Pretha whispered as she tried to place why alarms were going off in her head at the word. “I’m guessing that’s not a good thing.” She tapped another query into the computer.

Locate concentrations of Phosgene or larger than usual amounts of the chemicals used in its making.>>

She had the feeling it was a long shot, but she had to start someplace. As the computer worked, she nodded to the scientist. “Is there a test you can do to find out if that compound was in direct contact with this?” She tapped the edge of the tray she had balanced on the console.

Pretha
CoS

Reid gently took the plate. “If it was mixed on this or the base chemicals were stored here for a significant time, there might be residual particles.” Not lifting his eyes from the plate, he left for the science labs. The computer indicated that no aerosolised phosgene was onboard the Olympic. The base compound was present in sickbay. The computer deemed this harmless, as it was not airborne, nor likely to become so.

-Matrix

Pretha watched him go, with a bit of hope that it could be a lead. Then was frowning as the computer came back negative. She moved to the door and nodded to the NE security officer there before heading for the bridge. This wasn’t something that needed to go across the comms. She decided that with everything happening, chasing the CO wasn’t a good idea. Stopping at one of the corridor panels, she waited till no one was nearby and tapped an inquiry for the location of the CO.

Pretha
CoS

The computer told her that Captain Jasar was currently on the bridge.

-Matrix

((Moving Pretha to bridge))

Sathut blinked, having zoned out. “What was I doing? Ah, finding a way to make this place more comfortable for the children. Perhaps…” He wandered around in thought.

Sathut

Eris found his way back to Sathut. “I think it would do everyone some good if we made this place a little less… sterile. A little homeish.” He smiled and waited to hear Sathut’s thoughts.

-Matrix

“Perhaps something comfortable to sit on. Some toys for the young ones, perhaps. Definitely some chairs, and cots to lie on.” He determined.

Sathut

“Good ideas. How can I help?” Eris asked. The Romulans looked happy to have any shelter at all.

-Matrix

“If I can get permission to get some of that stuff down here, you can give me a hand in moving things around,” Sathut replied. He pressed his commbadge. =^=Sathut to Ops. I would like to requisition some chairs from the nearest lounge area and some cots for the Romulan children to sleep on.=^=
“Preferably I would like to get you all out of this cargo bay, but that will not be an option until the situation is calmed…” He sighed.

Sathut

=/\=Lieutenant, we have a situation at the moment. Hold tight with what you have. We’ll do our best after…=/\=

-Matrix

Sathut looked to Eris with a slight sigh. “I honestly have no idea what is happening up there.”

Sathut

“Should we do anything?” Eris asked. He looked back at the refugees, blissfully unaware of whatever may be unfolding on the upper decks.

-Matrix

“How about we play a game? Could you get any of the children who aren’t resting? and any teens or adults who are restless or need a distraction.” Sathut suggested. He recruited an officer who had been standing around doing nothing to help him set up some crates in an awkward circle, then went to the replicator and made a soft sphere about the size of a basketball.

Sathut

Eris gathered the children and a few teens and adults. All told, the group numbered 22, including Sathut and Eris, when they were all assembled.

-Matrix

Sathut grinned. “I do not know what this game is called in other cultures, but it is a fairly simple game. Please, could everyone get inside the circle of crates?” Sathut asked.

Once everyone was in the circle, he began to explain a game which in some areas of Earth is called “gaga ball.” The ball was bounced or rolled across the circle with the intent of hitting others in the legs. If it hit your legs you were out. If not, you had to throw it to try to get everyone else out. It was a fairly intensive game, and he hoped it would keep their minds off what was happening elsewhere until the situation was dealt with.

He also invited any officers who weren’t working on anything currently to join in the game, and was pleased to hear the laughter and happy shouting of both Starfleet officers and Romulans within a few minutes.

Sathut

As Romulans dodged about and played, there was a general air of levity. “Well done Starfleet.” Eris said, just hopping out of the way of the ball.

Only moments later, the ship shook. The Romulans hit the deck. “Starfleet! Get down! Unless you want to die!” This was clearly habit from their trip to the Neutral Zone.

-Matrix

Sathut dove to the floor like everyone else, waiting for the shaking to calm down. He crawled over to a particularly frightened looking child and comforted them.
