The Federation had set up a kind of tachyon net that would note any physical disturbances if it was crossed along the neutral zone. Which, unfortunately, was not complete. He tapped at the side of his nose in thought. Perhaps the tachyons could be emitted as a burst. Certainly they would spread but, maybe, if the cloaked vessel was there it would not be ‘rerouted’ around it by illusion but reveal the ship. He would need help from Science on that one. He checked to see the status of the science department …
NE Reno ..
OOC: Ishtar seems away so will still ponder this ..

OOC: Thank you for your patience! I had to clear up a little confusion first. :D

IC:
“You seem to be pondering something, Ensign.” Ishtar approached Reno in the midst of his contemplation. “Penny for your thoughts?” She didn’t wish to disrupt him in the instance he was onto something, so she held back to see what had his features twisted with deep regard.

Lt. Nhamashal, CSO

The more he thought about it the more Reno thought it was beyond even this vessel. It would be like a needle in a haystack to find, and even more if it was a moving needle. In the ‘old’ days of submersibles they sent down depth charges, but did they have enough to even do that? Could they configure them to emanate in a sufficient area of space? Even ‘dusting’ the areas with residual tachyons to be like a cloud a ship would need to pass through would be hard. If they could ‘paint’ the cloaking field that would be even better. Again, they’d need to know the ‘what’ to even be able to think it.

Reno tapped at the screen in front of him. “Cloaked ship out there in the wide area of space. But where? How do we light her up? I was thinking tachyon bursts but on a moving target it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.” He glanced up. “Thoughts?”
- Reno, NE
OOC: Bump .. Gene

“A tachyon burst isn’t such a bad idea.” Ishtar plundered her mind for data on cloaking devices. A few seconds passed until something came to mind. “Generally speaking, when Romulan ships are cloaked and moving, they give off slight Tetryon emissions, especially when at warp. Although, considering the circumstances, I doubt this vessel has gone to warp. Still, there is a slight change there may be Tetryon signatures.” She explained, assuming the cloaking device was Romulan. “On normal scans, Tetryon radiation won’t show up. However, since Tetryons only appear in subspace, we could try a low frequency subspace scan. If anything, it could give us an idea of where this ship might be and we could angle the tachyon bursts to that general area. It won’t be perfect, but it’s a thought.”

Lt. Nhamashal, CSO

Reno scratched at his forehead. “Uh, right,” he drawled, indicative of his thinking, though it had made others think he was not very bright. “Tetryons. Well, I can configure this here system to go low band subspace. Could y’all help me with the configuration on what we are lookin fer? Y’all take that station here and I’ll work at this here one. I’ll work a varied range of low frequencies rather than a specific one.” It was a thought. He was fine with the equipment but when it came to some bits the Texan was out of his league. Like trying to tease the ivories to make music - which he felt was only adequate at at best - he could work the systems. Plugging in parameters like this was best suited for his friends in science. Glancing to Ishtar, he thought, and some rather sweet lookin ones at that.
- Reno, Eng

OOC: Bump

Reno finished inputting in the parameters. And then considered his next idea and accessed the database to present simulations from each class of Romulan ship that they knew of in their history. He figured that over the years of building better mouse traps that the older ships with their less advanced cloaks would be easier to detect while the more recent would not. “I’m ready to run a simulation exercise on subspace tetryon detection.” Knowing this might take a bit, he hit the enter key. If Ishtar wanted to add other parameters she was able to in real time. For now he would see what came up. His right leg bounced as he watched the small screen.
- Reno, Eng

Occasionally, sensors would detect a blip. It was the shape of a Valdore type warbird, but too small. It didn’t really fit any known Romulan ship description. It seemed to be circling the Olympic like a predator would its prey, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

-Matrix

Reno wasn’t about to claim any kind of victory on detection. In fact he would have likely failed testing in any kind of Academy testing. But it looked right and well, the question was - what did he do that ‘was right’ on detection. Reno tried to fine tune his calibrations better to at least narrow down the subspace frequencies that did pick it up, as well as plot out the ‘range’ of this orbiting ship from theirs. Was it static orbit or did it vary? Was it on one plane or was it on a 360 degree field? Was there a pattern based on the blips? Once he had those parameters going in the system, Reno turned to the XO.

“Sir, I have a possible hit. Small ship. Valdore like but smaller build. I have plots on the sensor hits. Trying to fine tune things and plot out a pattern.” Really he didn’t think he would get a pattern. Rommies were pretty adept at the art of ‘sneak’.
NE Reno

Moving the tetryon beam around would reveal a pattern that this ship was rapidly circling in something of a sphere. Possibly an attempt to trap the Olympic in place.

-Matrix

Reno tipped his cowboy hat back some to rest higher on his forehead as he looked at the developing pattern. And didn’t much like it. They were circling them. That was hardly a big deal but looked to be more than simply a tactical move to stay in motion. This seemed to be more and when the Rommies did it definitely more. “Uh Sir, we may have a problem.”

Now what should he say? There was zero evidence of malice but for the fact that the Romulans were doing it. “What do you think of this pattern, Commander? Are they laying mines? Have their own Tholian web?” Cloaked mines were not unheard of. And they were king of the cloaks.
- Reno

OOC: Bump .. Gene

OOC: Unless I’m mistaken, at the moment, Reno has the conn in the absence of PCs.
OOC: Eep! You’re right!

IC:
Continuing to scan would show no evidence of cloaked mines. While it was not out of the question, it seemed more trouble than it was worth. If anything, this was for intelligence gathering and waiting to strike like a predator in the jungle.

-Matrix

Reno having the conn. Who would have ever thought that he would have that. But what a place and time to do it!!? He set his hat on more firmly and called to the Captain. When in doubt, report. =^= Reno to the Captain. Reports from the freighter is that they are nearly done there and soon to return. One body has been beamed to sickbay for postmortem. =^= He had that from the transporter operator in an engineering status. =^= And we seem to have a Romulan cruiser doing circles around us. Cloaked. Small ship. Valdore like. Picking her up randomly in sensor searches. Good cloak on her. =^=
- Reno

=^=Understood, I’m on my way.=^=

A few minutes later Hamilcar returned to the bridge. He turned to NE Reno. “Where is she now?” He asked as he took his place in the command chair.

-CO

Capt. Reval followed Hamilcar onto the bridge, black coat billowing behind him. “I will bet you every last bit of money I have she’s circling. She’s looking for your ship’s weakness.” Scans would confirm that the Romulan ship was still circling.

-Matrix

Reno tipped his hat back. “Circling she is, ah, Captains,” he replied. “Last range is …” he said, looking to the sensor reports. He would bet it was outside of weapons range but likely not too far out.
- Reno

The Romulan vessel was actually perilously close to the Olympic, and moving at high speed. Getting a target lock would be impossible at this point.

-Matrix

“Battle stations. Helm, turn to face her, ready Phasers.” Hamilcar stated calmly, looking at a tactical display on his arm chair.

“You might want to sit down for this Captain.” Hamilcar stated simply, not looking up from the display.

-CO

“This is a mistake.” Reval said. He muttered something to himself in Romulan. The warbird stopped circling and came nose to nose with the Olympic. They received an incoming hail from Suket.

-Matrix

Pretha walked in and her body tightened as she readied her stance for a fight, hand on her phaser before realizing the battle stations call was because of what was outside.

Seeing NE Branson at the ready at the security station, Pretha stepped off to the side to remain out of view of wonder came to the screen as the hail was announced. Something told her right now was not the time for the heads of security to be seen.

Lt JG Pretha Oberon
CoS

The viewscreen lit up an the image of a Romulan woman came to centre. She had the state of a sociopath in her eyes. “I am Commander Suket of the I.R.W. Relos. You have something I want. Give it to me, and I’ll let you keep your band of traitors.” Reval stepped to the centre of the bridge. “Traitors. Traitors. Traitors!? We’re not the ones who abandoned everything Romulus stood for as soon as it was convenient!”
“Reval… you’re insignificant now. I will speak to the Captain of the Federation ship or I will open fire.”

-Matrix

Hamilcar remained seated watching the exchange with curiosity, while at the same time annoyed that the screen came on without his orders.

“Easy Reval, I’ll talk to her.” He said calmly. He stood up and put his hand on the romulans’ shoulder, in a gesture to move out of his way.

Reval stepped aside, but remained next to Jasar.

=^=This is Captain Hamilcar Jasar of the USS Olympic.=^= He put his hands in his pockets, he stood in the center of the bridge casually, his chin slightly up as if he didn’t have a care in the world.

-CO

=/\= Captain Jasar. I suppose I must educate you. Unless you secretly bear Intelligence agents. One of the traitors abandoned his service to the Empire. He is a key asset in an ongoing project. I will have him. By any means necessary.=/\=

-Matrix

These were the security situations Pretha hated. You can’t protect everyone when it’s ships firing against one another. And with everything else she had been doing, this was the first she was hearing about a traitor of any kind.

She shook her head slightly at the other security officer as he started to turn in reaction to the growing pitch of voices. The crew needed to remain calm and let the Captain handle this. Diplomacy wasn’t the Security Chief’s strength and she knew she couldn’t help right now except remain quiet, pay attention, and support her CO.

Pretha
CoS

Reno chewed his lip and split his attention between the viewscreen - he had little chance to actually ‘see’ a real Romulan in the ‘almost flesh’. Being in engineering most of the time limited that opportunity. But the chief was away and a sitting duck in the freighter. With their shields up they’d not be easily able to beam them back. It certainly was a sticky situation. His eyes glanced at the power levels on the ship ensuring that the shields were up and at optimum levels. Romulans were tricky but at least the shields were between them and him.
- Reno, Eng NE

The Olympic’s power levels were at their optimum and shields were at full capacity.

-Matrix

=^=Greetings Commander.”Hamilcar stated simply. “Tell me about this agent. Why is he so important?=^= Hamilcar asked. He studied the Romulan intently as he awaited the reply.

-CO

Suket’s eyes narrowed. =/\=Romulan projects are not yours to know of. Especially after you let our world and people die.=/\= Reval’s every muscle tensed as though he wanted to leap through the viewscreen. =/\=You have five minutes to deliver what I want. After that, I will be forced to take him by whatever means necessary.

-Matrix

Hamilcar ignored the history lesson. =^=Well, who is he, who am I looking for? These people have requested asylum. Why should I just give this one person over to you?=^=

-CO

Suket made a sound almost akin to a growl. =/\=Meinok. He’s government property. His work is important to the regrowth of the Empire. The rest of them, take them or leave them. They’re not my problem.=/\=

As if cued by hearing his name, Dr Meinok sped onto the bridge. He looked at the image of Suket, then to Reval, and he whispered “I’m sorry.” before pulling a detonator out of his pocket. He glared at Suket. “Not one Romulan leaves this ship! Not. One. I will never work for you people again. I would rather die.” He primed his weapon. “Phosgene gas. Crude, but so simple to make. Carefully distributed, it will kill everyone on this ship. Starting here. With me.”

Suket kept her comment simple. =/\=Five minutes. Deliver him.=/\= And she cut off the channel.

-Matrix

Reno froze. Great. Always some crazy guy with a bomb. Since everyone - namely the rebel - was focused on and glaring at Suket Reno used one hand with his body in between them to lightly tap at the engineering controls - to isolate the bridge from the ventilation systems. If anything goes down it will only go down here, he thought. Unless he has more around the ship … Reno didn’t want to die but he’d not let a thousand others die from his cowardice. Site to site transport was too risky. He could easily activate it before the beam took. They had five minutes.
- Reno

The only areas still at risk of spread from Meinok’s device were the turbolift and Captain’s ready room.

Reval snapped out of his trance. He whispered to Jasar “Don’t trust her. She’ll attack this ship as soon as she has what she wants. Meinok… he must’ve left for a reason. Your ship, your call.”

-Matrix

Reno made sure the shields were up. It was an automatic thing; the last thing he wanted to see was sabotage suddenly there. As he did that he locked out the turbolift to the bridge. As much as it would be nice to see the cavalry charging in that likely wasn’t a very good thing to do in this case with a trigger happy boobie trapped Rommie. One thing that he did do after setting a force field up in the turbolift was to scan to the Romulan ship. He knew that all his tapping might be suspicious but they still had a warbird out there to deal with. If they thought that the ship would attack it would behoove them to keep an eye on it.

The warbird had raised shields and primed weapons.

If he had a chance he’d open up a comms channel to security so they could hear what was going on on the bridge. They might not be able to use the lift but Reno woul dhope they’d be smart enough to know they could beam into the ready room undetected. He wasn’t concerned about that - his concern was to make sure that if anyone died by this one bomb it would only be the bridge people.

Reno

Security was alerted to the events on the bridge.

Pretha scanned the bridge quickly to see if anyone was gonna play hero. Seeing Reno tap the console, she desperately hoped he had called security or medical or had done something equally useful.

She then spoke in a calm voice, but one loud enough to be heard over the din of gasps and whispered shock. “I’m guessing you’re Meinok? I’m Pretha, Chief Security Officer. You’ve asked for asylum and the captain just claimed he’d give it. May I ask why you believe such drastic measures are called for when we have shown you no reason to feel angry or betrayed?”

Meinok’s eyes followed Pretha, but his body did not turn. “It is not that I don’t trust you- to a point. But every person has their limits. Trading one person to save 39 others may seem rather appealing. I will not orphan my son so that I can make bioweapons for the Tal’Shiar. I will not be a part of their murder machine. I am sorry Lt, Captain. But this was the only way to be sure.”

As she spoke, she moved her body sideways along the consoles and wall on the port side. Her cody moving ever closer to the main viewer. She was hoping to turn his gaze to her and focus on her and not the others on the bridge… especially the CO. It flitted briefly thru her mind that she was grateful the XO wasn’t here.

Pretha
CoS

Meinok didn’t move. He seemed genuinely regretful that it had come to this.

-Matrix

A light on the security station console began blinking, indicating an incoming mesage. Ir someone was able to see the meassage, it would read, =^=What kind of bio-weapon is on the bridge? Odinson.=^=

Odinson (XO)

Hamilicar raised his hands up and took a step sideways, slowly walking between the consoles and Meinok, towards the viewscreen. What ever happened, his first command, he had to deal with a suicide bomber, on his bridge no less. Not the start he was looking for. Regardless of what happened, he couldn’t let that bomb go off. He had an idea, he hoped it would work and his staff would understand.

“Tell me more” He said, as calmly as he could, still slowly walking between the consoles. “What do you think will happen if you are returned to her.” he said, gesturing with his head towards the view screen.

-CO

“You don’t understand. This” he gestured with his bomb “is what they want. Bioweapons. Ways of killing large numbers of people. Captain. I don’t want to do this. I don’t like this. I will hand you the device right now if you can assure me that the Tal’Shiar will never kill anyone with the products of my work again.”

-Matrix

“How do you expect me to make that assurance?” He asked, still moving slowly, trying to position Meinok between him and his COS. “I can protect you as best as I can, but I can’t guarantee that they don’t already have some specifications or prototypes of your work.”
