Sural looked at the text, translated and scrolling across the screen. While he had a penchant for crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, detective work was not his forte. “Commander, if you are suggesting that the ‘who’ is the child, then the Romulan commander in pursuit is not operating on her own but under anothers’ orders. Suket, being female, could hardly be the ‘father’. If this supposition is true then another is pushing Suket to retrieve the woman.” Logically that was not sound either. All that would be required would be for Suket’s ship to do enough to take down the shields of this freighter and beam a team over and take the woman after securing the ship - given that they were presumably only scientists and children. Still, if guards claimed to be the father, implying violence done to her, then carrying someone of important lineage was dubious. “Were there any DNA tests on the fetus Commander?” he asked as the XO had performed that search.

D’Vash would find record of Rhaelara refusing to comply with any DNA test, stating “I don’t need to know, I don’t want to know.”

Sural waited patiently. However his own mind was active and ‘working the odds’. As illogical as it was the Vulcan found that the nature of the vessel as a ‘ghost ship’ was creeping about his psyche as a sehlat might creep about the perimeter of an encampment just outside of the range of the light. He had never considered a vessel to be a living thing, however, he had not missed the analogies toward that idea. And here, with the freighter on what could be considered ‘life support’ with no viable way of fixing it, Sural considered that a problem to his senses. It was not a feeling; that would be illogical. It was more of a professional mindset that he, like a doctor, would seek to keep the patient alive. Here, even on support, its life was bleeding away. No, the vessel was not the ‘prize’ that Suket would be after.

D’vash leaned back in his seat and sighed. “She refused to take a DNA test. Said she didn’t want to or need to know who the father was.”

Scratching his scalp, the XO continued to think of possible reasons why Suket MIGHT be after the child. “Maybe. . . . maybe the child is the answer to a prophecy, the next great leader that will reunify the empire. . . . .I don’t know. I’m reaching for anything, Sural. Isn’t there a Vulcan saying, something about ‘when the logical isn’t the answer, consider the illogical’, or something akin to that?”

“That is most .. illogical, Commander. Even what may appear to be illogical, once known, becomes logical through understanding.” Really, how could humans truly think this way? Like a long suffering parent, Sural would have, if human, sighed. “That supposition can easily be validated by interviewing the refugees. If it is a legend or myth then it would be known by at least a percentage of them.”

He glanced down. “Loges have been transferred to the Olympic from the freighter. Unless we choose to perform a room by room search I cannot see why we cannot accomplish the same examinations from the Olympic.” He wouldn’t admit to getting jitters, but Sural did want to get back.

The only thing remaining of note in the ship’s logs was an attempt by the first mate, who could be identified as the dead man in the room with them, to flag Dr Meinok as a potential risk shortly after departure. The Tal’Shiar has been looking for him for two years prior. It was likely this raised the first mate’s suspicions. A note read ‘I do not know why there is an open warrant for Dr Meinok. But we are carrying a fugitive and that alone unsettles me. The Captain seems to think he’s harmless.’

“Something tells me that search would be a waste of time. We may as well head back . . . .wait.” D’vash gave the log when more glance when something caught his eye, something he had almost missed.

“Look here. He pointed to the note about the Romulan doctor. “Could be something, maybe nothing, but it might be worth it to at least search Sickbay or the doctors quarters.”
