Toren had been dreading this. Micah’s old office. He knew from the ships manifest that she wasn’t the counsellor anymore, he guessed that after what had happened she hadn’t felt up to helping others, but still, the place had far too many memories for him to feel at ease in.He approached the door and rang the chime. When the door slid open, he stepped inside smartly.
“Ensign Nalar, reporting for Psych Eval”
Ensign Nalar
The door opened with a shhk, revealing the counselor’s office behind. The decor of the office was strange, to say the least. Other than the nice, human-sized couch, everything looked like it had been manufactured for a child. The desk was half the height of a normal one, and even the computer looked small. There was a chair opposite to the couch that, strangely, was proportioned for a child but was tall, almost like a high chair. The counselor himself, well…
Toren stopped for a moment, caught off guard by the unexpected decor. He had expected it to be different from Micah’s day, but this was odd, and for a moment he wondered if he had accidentally come to the wrong room.
The man was a feline alien, no more than three feet in height when standing. He wore a sleeveless flowing grey robe, with gold, silver, and reddish embroidery covering it in intricate detail. Honestly he’d rather wear nothing in regards to cloth, but that didn’t seem to be approved of around here. On his ears were a selection of bright golden rings, some with small gems embedded in them. His wrists bore woven rope bracelets, the right arm wrapped from wrist to elbow in braided twine. His right leg, although not visible from where he was seated, bore an intricate silver brace, the metal woven in its own patterns.
Toren’s eyebrows raised when he saw the strange little creature in front of him A cat? he thought to himself, No, not a cat he could immediately sense the swirling emotions of a sentient being, Earth Cats didn’t have anything like that level of emotional depth.
The small alien stood and walked to the open door to greet his guest. “Greetings,” he said, his head dipping respectfully. His right palm rested on his chest, then extended out in a graceful motion towards Nolar. “May your hearts beat strongly, and your love grow wide,” he spoke as he performed the action, then pulled his hand back, folding his hands in front of himself.
“I…yeah?” Toren said, not sure what, if any, response was appropriate to such a flowery greeting.
When he did this, it would be shown to the ensign that on his hand he had three fingers and a thumb, as opposed to the regular four and a thumb. “Thank you for coming. Please, take a seat,” he spoke, gesturing to the comfortable looking couch, then moving over to his chair and gracefully leaping into it.
Sathut, CNS
Toren settled himself on the couch, easing into its soft cushions, he had been in a number of psych evals since the war, and the lies were already forming in his head, so familiar now that he often had trouble remember which stories were lies and which were true.
“Let’s get to it then shall we Doc?”
Ensign Nalar
“I suppose. However, I am not a medical doctor or a psychologist. I am a counselor. So, please, don’t call me Doc. My name, Sathut, will suffice,” he said with a smile. “If you are too stiff to call me by my name, you can call me Counselor.”
“Sathut then” finding that he liked the little Cat, despite his position as what Toren would derisively call a “shrink”.
“I’m sorry if my greeting made you uncomfortable, it is a traditional greeting among my people. The equivalent of a handshake, I suppose. So, Ensign Toren Nalar, where are you from? I can see from your file that you are Betazoid. I suppose that means you can read my mind or something, doesn’t it?”
Sathut, CNS
“It didn’t make me feel uncomfortable, it’s just a bit…more…than I’m used to,” he said truthfully.
“As for where I’m from, Betazed originally, although it’s been a while since I was back, I suppose I don’t really have a home anymore, you know how it is for Starfleet” his tone was light, friendly, but he was on guard, careful not to give too much up too soon.
“As for reading your mind, we’re generally not supposed to do that. Betazoid kids are taught more or less from birth than non-Betazoid minds aren’t the be read without explicit permission, apparently non-telepathic sentients don’t like the idea of us rooting around in their minds, although I’ve always thought it was more to do with the fact that most people lie constantly, and they hate the idea of someone being able to see the truth” he grinned, speaking truthfully and easily. “I can sense your emotions though, that’s like the human sense of smell, you can’t just switch it off, I guess humans can pinch their noses, but it doesn’t really work like that with minds” he joked.
