Oliver stood outside the Chief Engineer’s office straightening his uniform. He’d been doing so for at least a full minute, trying to make sure it looked presentable. Even after four years at the Academy, he still hadn’t gotten used to the feeling. Finally he breathed in and thought to himself, Don’t worry. You got this. It’s just like pulling apart cars back home. Except for it being nothing like that. Just try not to make a fool of yourself.

With that rousing pep talk to himself, he raised his right hand and pressed the chime on the door.

Sural’s brow rose. How time ‘flew’ as the Terrans said it, when one was pursuing curious mysteries of … well, he had peeked at the latest ‘3D Chess Digest’ that had just come in and become intrigued by the accompanying ‘chess problem’. What move would one do here? However, duty called, which technically was what he should have been doing anyway. Curiously he did see the similarities of 3D chess with that of staff scheduling and assignments. Chess pieces, however, were much less wont to complain. He pressed the corner option on the console and the door swished open.

“Ensign Pierce, please come in,” Sural said, straightening to stand. “Welcome aboard.” He recalled the human propensity to social etiquette and gestured to the replicator on the wall. “Help yourself if you wish.”
