Oliver frowned in front of the ship’s counselor’s office. He didn’t like counselors, he’d been sent to a few too many after his father died and they now simply made him… uncomfortable. Regardless, a check in was required, so he might as well get it over with. I just wish they could have a computer do this instead, he thought.

Putting on a half-convincing smile, he pressed the chime to the CNS office.

-Oliver Pierce, Ensign

The door slid open to what seemed like it would be a very welcoming environment… if you were a cat. There were potted plants in awkward spots, cardboard boxes piled up in one corner, and what looked like a kitty’s climbing tower sitting just opposite the couch that was presumably for the guests. In fact, other than the nice, human-sized couch, everything looked like it had been manufactured for a child. The desk was half the height of a normal one, and even the computer looked small.

The counselor himself sat at his desk, and Ens. Pierce would likely have to do a double take, for at first glance he seemed to be looking at a pet cat that someone had dressed up in some elaborate costume. But a second glance confirmed that yes, that was the counselor. The man was a feline alien, no more than three feet in height when standing. He wore a sleeveless flowing Turquoise robe, with gold, silver, and reddish embroidery covering it in intricate detail. Honestly he’d rather wear nothing in regards to cloth, but that didn’t seem to be approved of around here. On his ears were a selection of bright golden rings, some with small gems embedded in them. His wrists bore woven rope bracelets, the right arm wrapped from wrist to elbow in braided twine. His right leg, although not visible from where he was seated, bore an intricate silver brace, the metal woven in its own patterns.

The small alien stood and walked to the open door to greet his guest. “Greetings,” he said, his head dipping respectfully. His right palm rested on his chest, then extended out in a graceful motion towards the Ensign. “May your hearts beat strongly, and your love grow wide,” he spoke as he performed the action, then pulled his hand back, folding his hands in front of himself.

When he did this, it would be shown to Oliver that on his hand he had three fingers and a thumb, as opposed to the regular four and a thumb. “Thank you for coming. Please, take a seat,” he spoke, gesturing to the comfortable looking couch, then he moved over to his chair (the cat tower) and gracefully leaped onto it. He sat like a house cat, his hands folded beneath the material of his shirt.

Oliver stood in the doorway blinking. He’d heard that the counselor aboard the Olympic was a ‘Raka’, and everyone aboard his shuttle seemed to think that was quite funny, but in the midst of having a shuttle-induced panic attack and not recognizing the name he didn’t ask any questions. He certainly wasn’t expecting this. After a moment’s pause he gave a shrug and walked to the couch and saying half under his breath, “Sure, why not?”

After he sat he looked up to the Sathut and spoke slow, still getting his bearings. “So. What do we start with?”

Oliver Pierce, Ensign

“Well, I believe the best way to start a conversation is with introductions, and snacks if needed. I am Sathut, and I am the chief Counselor on the ship. Is there anything you’d like to eat or drink?” he gestured to the small replicator on his wall. The fur on the feline alien was smooth and a bit long, and he looked for all the world like a dark brown tabby with a white belly and muzzle. There was a bit of white on the end of his tail, and his hands (or were they paws?) were white-furred as well.

Oliver sat in silence for a second. He was hoping that simply accepting the counselor at face value would make the situation less surreal, but a talking cat offering him snacks just solidified the ‘Wonderland’ level of disorientation. “I’m fine. Thank you.” He managed.

After a second he found his manners and returned the introduction, “Oh, I’m Pierce… I mean, Oliver. No! I mean,” He took a breath, “I’m Ensign Oliver Pierce. I here for my new crew psych eval. Pleased to meet you.” With his head buried in his left hand he offered his right one to shake. His right hand was covered with a black glove, unlike his left, and if Sathut were to touch it, he would realize it wasn’t a normal, organic hand but instead was a metal prosthetic.

Ens. Oliver Pierce (Eng)

“I hope you don’t mind if I call you Oliver?” Sathut asked. Them being at somewhat of a distance, Sathut did not shake the ensign’s hand. His arms were quite short and not able to cross that distance. He relaxed in his chair, tail flicking back and forth in a relaxed manner. “Now, shall we begin?” he asked with a small smile.

“First of all, if you could tell me a little about yourself? I can ask questions if you have trouble thinking of things to say, but you can start with… where you were born, perhaps. What your motivations were to joining Starfleet, and why you chose engineering for your career path?”
