Okay, now they were getting somewhere. But she also had so many more questions. “How much longer do we have Katrina? Can you tell me about familial structures? Is there any? Or is there any sort of hierarchy or formal government?”

Michael Conrad was not a man who so readily gave up information to anyone. “By my estimation, we have 5 minutes and 22 seconds. Do you still wish to hear of…fizzle…the structures of their society?”

Decisions, decisions. She didn’t even have time to consult anyone, nor would she have even at the beginning. “Please tell me anything you can about Leamas, or Archanon, and any history they have together. And, thank you Katrina.” Ylana took a deep breath and hoped she had chosen wisely.

Katrina gave her best nod before speaking. “Archanon is a prince in the kingdom of Kalidon. He is an heir and the first in line to the throne of Kalidon. He operates currently as an ambassador to foreign entities. He is also known as a warrior and protector of his people.”

She then transitioned to Leamas. “Leamas is a former heir to the throne of Kalidon. He had once operated as a guide for people. However, all titles and authority were stripped from him upon his act of treason and attempt at a coup d’etat. Leamas was once one of the few Kaldonians able to utilize telekinesis within limits.”

“Archanon and Leamas share some history with each other. Archanon was Leamas’ replacement after the attempted coup. He also assisted in presiding over Leamas’s case before the Grand Arbiter and the Guardians.”

“There is no confirmation, however Conrad believes they could be distantly related as well.”

Katrina paused allowing it to sink and giving Ylana a chance to ask anything else.

Huh, well that was news! This wasn’t just some enactment of justice, this was a family battle, of which she understood, even if hers had never resulted in anything like that on Kalidon. “If Leamas was the former heir, then the current ruler of Kalidon is a relation, correct? And how does one become an heir?” Her mind was whirling and she knew this would make all the difference.

“To qualify as an heir to Kalidon, the individual must understand and pledge themselves to the ancient ways of Kaldonian rulers of the past. There is a key phrase though, that we discovered. ‘Ancient ways’ seem not to signify what sort of laws a ruler enacted in the past, but ‘ways’ signifying how rulership was to be conducted from the throne. The exact meaning is a bit vague, however it appears that Archanon, current heir to the throne knows it well. There does not necessarily mean a physical relation is in effect.” Katrina paused as her image began shifting more erratically.

It was too complex of a subject to get all the details she needed and Ylana was starting to feel the intensity of her disappearing time. “Why the coup? What was Leamas’ motivation for trying to seize power when he was already the heir?”

Katrina looked as though she were concentrating. “It was a dispute about the Vren. The Vren were attempting to voyage into the Kalidon Nebula. Attacks were being had, however the King was resorting to tactics of holding a defensive line. Leamas wanted to take the attack to Vren, to discourage any further attempts at entering the nebula.” She fizzled some more and shook her head. “I am sorry. I was not given long.”

There was a delay as she considered her next response while fizzling. “I’m not supposed to share this, but given that I was given such a very short time, I’ll do it anyway. I am a copy of the original Katrina program. Katrina is actually still aboard the Black Sparrow. She would have more information. Or you could always talk to Archanon.”

She fizzled some more. “Good luck,” was the last words the program spoke to her before disappearing. The data rod ejected itself from the computer, emitting a small clatter as it struck the floor.
