(This is the dinner mentioned in “My Kingdom for a Shuttle!”)

Bree had lain down for one of the two hours she had till dinner. The adrenaline had finally worn off, and the alcohol had taken its toll. She woke up to the alarm and got ready for dinner with Captain Urg. After cleaning up the best she could without a change of clothes, she opened the door and realized her guards were still there. “Well, hello there. Urg said I could ask for K’Letn,” slightly mispronounced, but close. “I could ask for her if I wanted to see the ship.” She glanced from one to the other and waited for some kind of response.

“Fire-Born”

One of the guards held a small device up and spoke something guttural. He then nodded to Brianna and said “Lady K’Letn will be with you shortly.” and he motioned her back inside. A few minutes later the door opened and the Klingon female Brianna had seen in the shuttle bay was standing there. “Lord Duroc tells me you wish a tour of the ship. Please, come with me. How am I to address you, human?”

Lady K’Letn

Bree stood up as the woman entered and nodded respectfully as they moved into the hallway. “I am Brianna O’Harra. You are welcome to call me Brianna or Bree. Either is fine.” She fell into step with the woman and glanced at her. “What would you like me to call you, Ma’am?” She didn’t know enough about the name Urg had given her to know if it was a first or last name.

“You may call me Lady K-” and she stopped and shook her head. “K’Letn. Just call me K’Letn. Follow me, Hum-… Brianna.” and she began leading her through dimly lit passageways and past dozens and dozens of crew. The vast majority of the crew were Klingon, but there were some that weren’t. Humans, Bajorans… even a Cardassian was seen… walked past them as they traveled through the ship. Most crew nodded in deference to K’Letn, but some simply nodded in acknowledgement. She didn’t seem to notice any difference.

K’Letn

Brianna smiled. “As you wish, K’Letn. The name suits you well.” It was a definite compliment. As they moved thru the ship, she glanced and nodded to the crew as they passed. “So with such a large and impressive ship, what do you recommend for sightseeing first?” She was half laughing realizing that a ‘tour’ was probably a bit more vague and broad. And they had less than an hour.

K’Letn stopped and looked down at the Mining Director. She appeared to be weighing a decision. Finally she said “Follow me.” and she made an abrupt turn and started heading aft.

It took a long time to walk the length of the massive vessel. K’Letn pointed out some of the places they passed and answered questions in a cold but polite manner. Finally, they reached their destination: a single lift door at the end of a noticeably seldom used passageway. The door opened and they stepped in and the lift rose.

When it opened, they were facing a short flight of stairs going up. K’Letn led the way and when they reached the top, they were standing in the middle of a clear dome. They were at the far aft end of the ship, and the length and breadth of the ship stretched before them. Three chairs sat near the front, facing towards the bow. K’Letn motioned her to the one on the left, her taking the one on the right. The one in the middle was larger, deep blood red hide and black obsidian, with the image of a massive hammer sewn in gold thread into the back.

As they sat, K’Letn said “You have questions, I can see that. Ask them. I will answer what I can. You should have some idea of who… and what… you are dining with tonight.”

K’Letn

Despite her ability to easily find her way back, the places she passed were a blur. In her mind, the layout made a bit of sense, but then, every once in a while, they passed something that seemed out of place by several decks. She chalked it up to Klingon oddities.

When they reached the observation dome, she couldn’t hold back her genuine reaction. “Oh gods…!!” She walked towards the edge of the done to look down at the vastness of the ship and the planet below. “This is… well it’s incredible!” She turned and took the offered seat.

As K’Letn asked about unasked questions, for a moment nothing came to mind. Then she took a deep breath. “You said I should know what I’m getting into. What did you mean by that? I gather he is the chosen of his deity. And that he finds interest in the mining projects I do. And, apparently, was told by his deity to ‘watch me’ cause of my fire. Not sure what it all means. So what do you recommend I know before I go have dinner with the man?” She had turned sideways in the seat, her hand absently running over the larger chair arm admiring the craftsmanship.

“I recommend you are careful. And you need to know that he is…” and she took a breath and slowly exhaled, then looked directly at her.

“He is insane. I do not meant that as an insult. It is true. He and his two brothers, all of them are crazy… very much so. Some say homicidal, some say psychotic… but they do not view reality the way the rest of us do, and how they view it is often problematic. Sometimes, that is a blessing. Sometimes not. And he is without a doubt the being most capable of violence I have ever seen… next to his oldest brother.” and she turned her head and looked out over the ship. “Which is not surprising, considering the life they have led.”

K’Letn

She listened and took it all in. “He has offered credit, manpower and equipment to invest in and backup my mining operations. Is he capable of doing that? Or is denying him a better course of action?” Hearing he was capable of violence and seeing the woman’s reaction made her wonder just what there was between the two.

“So you are saying I should have nothing to do with him?” She wanted to know just ‘how’ badly this woman wanted her away. If it was truly to ‘save’ her, maybe she could find out why. And if it was for more personal reasons, then she needed to know that even more!

Brianna

“Oh, he certainly has the resources. The Empire was very generous when it came to House Duroc’s… restitution. No, I wouldn’t worry about any financial agreement he enters into. He could build one of these ships a year for the next hundred years and still be able to do it again. And denying him outright can be… difficult… once he has set his mind to something. Dissuading him from such actions is akin to trying to hold Romulus together with your bare hands.” and she chuckled, but more in resignation than humor.

“Have as much to do with him as you want. I am his mate in public, but we do not share such… intimacy. Mine is debt owed to him by honor. House Duroc was locked in darkness for thousands of years. It took the three Chosen of the Builder to rectify that. I was born into the House that had built itself on the lies that held Duroc in that darkness. I now serve Duroc to make amends for that. My honor demands it, and House Duroc deserves that. But make no mistake… I am not blinded by honor as many Klingon are. My eyes are open, and they see that you will become attached to this House in some way… you just need to know what that can mean for you.”

K’Letn

She had the gall to blush as the woman hinted that she was welcome to make advances. Though if the man had a mate, she was no Klingon, and she knew her body broke easily under their hands when insult was given. “I won’t insult you with saying I don’t find him intriguing. But if you are his, I wish my body to remain in one piece.” She laughed but it had a bit of nervousness to it.

“And as to how I become attached to the House… my guess is as the head of the Mining Operations here. I doubt he will seek more. He strikes me as a man who wants his woman a bit more…” she started to say vicious but she didn’t get that from this woman, “worthy. He is the Lord of a House. You come from the Houses that I do not.”

A thought occurred to her and she turned to face the woman directly. “I need to ask you, K’Letn. Honesty between us. If he were to show more interest in me than as a work partner. What limit would you allow before seeking my blood? You have the right, as his mate, whether it’s a farce or not, to claim whatever you desire if I were to cross the line. So tell me, Lady K’Letn,” the title given with respect. “Tell me what limit you set for me and I will obey it to the best of my ability or come to you if I feel myself coming to cross it.” Her eyes looked at the capable woman and a shiver went down her spine and the fury this woman could possess if she were scorned.

K’Letn bared her teeth in a predatory smile, but her eyes held humor… and a bit of respect for her honesty. “There is no line… in private. In public, I am his and am duty-sworn to end you should you embarrass me. And even he knows better than to do so publicly. In private, there is no line. Although… in that arena, he may find another interested in you in that fashion.” and her grin took on a slightly less predatory note.

K’Letn

She made a mental note and was fine with those lines till the woman spoke of the private arena. “Another intere…” she looked over in time to see the woman and she blushed to her toes. “Oh…” she let her gasp fall flat into the space between them. “And ummm… if your Lord finds me to his liking after that?” She was using humor to mask her confusion at how she had gone from worrying she might be spaced, to wondering what would happen if this woman became an admirer.

K’Letn did nothing to stop her gaze from… wondering… before responding. “You seem to intelligent. I’m sure have the capacity for self-determination.” and she glanced at the bracer on her forearm. “It is time. Come.” and she stood suddenly. “I’m sure Urg is already waiting. I hope you like gagh.” and she gestured to the stairwell.

K’Letn

Gagh? She had no idea what that was.

As she followed the woman back down into the ship, she thought of the response she had gotten. It was an interesting dilemma, for her.

As the headed towards Urg, she wondered just how much interesting her life was going to get. Then she mentally kicked herself as she listened to Fate laugh at her and she shivered. “So what is gagh,” she asked about halfway back to where they had begun.
