SNIP

Once the suit was kicked off, and in a pile unceremoniously dumped by the door to grab on the way out, she moved towards him. “Drink sounds great. What do you have?” She dropped equally comfortable into the mentioned chair. She had no sooner sat down than something caught her eyes and she jumped back up. Moving to a small table with a nearly new looking part on it, she frowned and glanced back at the man. “This is part of a Gen one shuttle power core. This is ancient, even by our standards. How?” She reached a hand out to touch it, but paused. Her fingers hovering just over the surface as if fearing to touch it and make the hologram illusion, for surely that’s what it was, ruin her awe. She shook her head. “That’s not possible. I mean…” She was muttering under her breath as if not believing what she saw.

He laughed and said “Touch it! I have had that for… lords… decades, I think. I found it in the wreck of derelict while my brothers and I were stranded in the Mesolight Sector in an ion storm. Now that was fun!” and he laughed again and poured two flagons of the liquid.

Urg, Lord Duroc

She did. Her hand running over the casing like it was the most precious crystal she had ever uncovered. After a moment she pulled herself away with a look of pleasure on her face. “I’ve only seen them in training manuals. That’s amazing!” She came back and settled into the chair once more. “So, another question. The guards you sent. They were hurt and when they were taken from the shuttle, some female smeared their faces with a purple....goo… or … something,” she was obviously struggling to explain it. “What was it? And was it a punishment?” She was on the defensive, even without changing her seat. But the edge of her voice was subtly hinting that she could be more obvious about it if need be.

“Punishment? Gods no! It is a mark of honor! They bled in service to House Duroc. They are marked as Stalwarts of the House. The… ‘goo’…as you call it… is a mixture of ink and me and my brothers blood. The blood of the House stains their skin permanently. It marks them as those who will be Honored by The Builder when their time comes. Now… drink to the new heroes.” and he raised his flagon to her, and waited.

Urg, Lord Duroc

Brianna relaxed and took up the cup. “To the heroes, then. May they live to save my sorry backside again.” She laughed and took a swig.

The swig was a bit more than she shoulda. She immediately set the mug down and stomped her feet, coughing. Tears filled her eyes ac she looked at him. A huge grin cut across her face as she tried to cough, catch her breath, and speak. “Great bottles… of aged… bourbon! What IS that?” She was laughing and covering her mouth trying to mentally apologize to her throat.

Urg smiled and said simply “Klingon Bloodwine. Not for the faint of heart. Or constitution… to the heroes.” and he took a big swallow and smiled at her. “So who are you? And why the rush for a shuttle?”

Urg, Hard Drinker

Brianna laughed, still clearing her throat. “Good thing I’m not short on either.” She took another swig, slightly less this time. The cough ensued once more, but only a couple short ones this time and a huge intake of breath to put out the fire in her throat.

As he asked who she was, she inhaled a couple times to be ready for another drink and answered. Her voice edged with the rasp of the alcohol. “Good stuff. I’m Brianna O’Harra. Call me Bree. Easier on the tongue.” She smiled. “I’m the new Head of Mining Operations here and it’s not a rush for the shuttle so much as a week’s worth of runaround.” The sip she took this time only elicited a sharp inhale. “WHooo… now it’s settling. I love it.” She leaned back in the chair and crossed her ankle over her knee. “I hadn’t been to any of the sites because of this yahoo’s runaround. In the evenings the shuttle list as available, but the next day, regardless when I come in, suddenly they are unavailable or spoken for. So this morning,” she shrugged with a big grin, “I decided enough was enough. I’m sure the Governor will have my head on a platter before the day is done. But it was worth it.” She raised her goblet to him and took another sip. In smaller doses, now, she could manage the drink and talking.

“In my searching, I found a cave system directly beneath the cliff we landed on. It was bigger than the ones we had previously dug and mined out. So I am thinking either made before the calamity, or natural. That’s when we were attacked. I’m guessing we aren’t the only ones interested in it. Your guards, who by the way I owe my life to and don’t even know their names, were actually really good to me. For all my hell and bother and not listening,” she sighed and shook her head before smiling once more. “Well, they saved me. And that’s something I owe them, and you, a thank you for. Governor would be looking for another Mining Ops and also trying to figure out how to retrieve the taken shuttle.” She took a sip again and rested the glass on the arm of her chair.

Her head cocked sideways, making her look somehow softer around the edges. “So.. who exactly are you and why intervene on my behalf?”

Urg listened and laughed when she finshed with her questions. “I am Urg’tohn, Lord of the Imperial Nobel House Duroc, Chosen of Kavaar’ton The Builder, Defender of The Faithful and Blessed of the Right Hand of Kahless.” and he lifted his drink and said “Call me Urg… easier on the tongue.” and he grinned and took a drink, droplets of it wetting his facial hair. Wiping his mouth with the back of a gloved hand, Urg continued. “I intervened for two reasons, Bree…” and he looked at her intently, his demeanor changing on a dim, going from jovial to unsettlingly intense. He leaned forward and put his eyes even with hers, and they burned with a righteous fire few possessed. “First is the Builder told me to watch you. To witness your fire.” and then he switched back again to jovial and leaned back chuckling. “The second was that I really wanted to hitt that guy again.” and he laughed loudly and banged his fist on the table.

Urg, Lord Duroc

Bree laughed at the comment about his name and took another sip. She realized that sipping it a bit at a time kept the fire just long enough to keep her from coughing with the next shot.

When he leaned forward to talk of her Fire and that his Builder had told him to, and that he wanted to punch the man, she frowned. “Again, huh? Seems like the man deserves it… a lot.” She laughed with him. As he finished laughing, she looked at him. “I do not understand who The Builder is, but I believe you. I just don’t know why you Klingon deity would have any interest in a loud mouthed human.” She was musing out loud and wasn’t sure she even expected an answer.

“The Builder’s will is his own. We simply serve that will. And yes, that idiot should be punched everytime he wakes up in the morning, just to get it out of the way.” and he grinned.

He paused and looked at her in thought, and then slammed his fist on the table and said “I have decided. House Duroc will invest in OED V. In addition to the embassy we came to build, we will invest in operations. Mining would be a good place to start. How can my House purchase a mine of our own, and how can we invest in more?”

Urg’tohn, Maybe Not As Crazy As You Thought

Bree laughed as he spoke of the Dock Master being punched on a regular basis. “I would agree, but that would mean I would have to actually go see him every day.” She laughed and watched him look at her. Her own green eyes looking back with equal intensity. As his hand slammed into the table, she jumped slightly, a huge smile on her face. “Well, I’ll have to check with the Governor. But I don’t see it being an issue.”

Her own gaze leveling on him this time. “So… are you interested in supporting an already operating mine? Or do you wish to invest in the exploration of a new mine?” There was a reason behind her query and she watched him over the rim of her goblet as she took another sip of the firewater.

He looked at her and said flatly. “Let’s do both. Do you need operating capital? Manpower? Equipment? House Duroc can supply what is needed.”

Urg, Financier

She laughed and took a deep swig of her wine, her throat protesting with a short cough fit as she laughed. “Well, now… that is an offer, Urg! I admit I’m not sure what all I can get permission for. But it seems, if you are interested, I could use some backing for an exploration into the cave system I found. Like I said, I have no idea what it is, I need to get some more research done. It could be abandoned and played out. Or it could be brand new, or even natural. I will speak to the Governor and see what agreement we can all come to.” She held her nearly empty glass to him and winked. “To a long and prosperous friendship between us, and this ruddy planet.” Her laughter was as wild as her and there was an edge of inebriation to it. While not drunk, she was definitely feeling it. And apparently, she was enjoying the feel.

Urg banged his flagon against hers and downed the contents. “Excellent!! Put me with this Governor and the three of us will finalize details!” and he laughed… or roared, it was hard to make the distinction.

Urg, Son of Kavaar’ton

She laughed. “I’ll do just that. And on that note,” she laughed, slammed her own mug on the table then upended the last large gulp. She coughed again, her feet banging on the ground as she caught her breath between laughs. “I think I should go. If I have any more, I may not be fit to return to the station this evening.” She smiled at him and laughed. “I am gonna have to get me a bottle of this.”

“A barrel will be sent to your residence, then!” and he laughed. He then hit his interface and barked something in Klingon, and then paused as if in thought, and then barked something else.

She laughed at him and shook her head, her eyes narrowing slightly. “I will have to watch my tongue around you, Urg. Something tells me I will talk myself into a Klingon House of pleasure.” She laughed and set her empty mug down.

“Your shuttle is being prepared. You can leave whenever you like…” and he looked at her and said in a slightly different tone, “… or you could stay for dinner. As my guest. Your choice, Fire-Born.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Her smile, a moment ago as jovial and full of mirth as his, softened slightly on the edges. She looked at him for a long, hard moment. She nodded and her smile broadened once more. “I think I would like that. Thank you, Urg.” She had to admit, she was sincerely curious about the man. He was the first Klingon she had been around that didn’t seem tainted by Academy training and years of serving the Federation. His edges weren’t rubbed soft. And his devotion to a deity other than Kahlis had her curious as well. He was definitely an enigma she found as fascinating as wondering what she would find cracking open a strange geode.

He clapped his hands together and said “Excellent! I will give you access to quarters so you can freshen up. We feast in two hours. If you want to see the ship, ask K’Letn. She will show you around. But um… dont turn your back on her. Or let her show you any air locks. She can be… reactionary… to females she sees as a threat.” and he grinned and stood. “In two hours then!” and he walked to the door, yelling in the Klingon tongue. Two guards came in and placed fists on hearts and said “Please. This way, Fire-Born.”
