The hours of surgery it took to put her ship crash patient back together was grueling. It was touch and go as they repaired busted organs and arteries not to mention the time it took set broken bones. When Linarra took off her bloody gloves and threw then away she was nearly shaking with fatigue she stubbornly refused to let another doctor take over. She never left a patient once she took their case. The series of tests run on his blood came back with an ID. Atticus Wolf. There wasn’t very much in his records beyond a name and string of vague information about the places he had been reported seen. Other than not even a family history. Linarra drank her black coffee near the recovery area where they had taken her patient.
“If our mysterious Mr. Wolf lasts the night then he may make a complete recovery. That is a strong if,” Linarra recorded into the console for her evening notes to be typed up later by her secretary. Thank the gods for her secretary, something she never had as a CMO. Whether he lived was now mostly in the hands of Mr. Wolf and whatever deity he served. The man was alone so Linarra grabbed her padd and sat and waited doing her regular work in a chair next to his bed. Her hair was put up in a messy bun after hours of surgery and wearing doctor’s scrubs. The nurses moved around her nervously since they weren’t used to having a half klingon on their floor and certainly not the head of the hospital.

It took hours for Atticus to regain consciousness, which was amazing really and a testament to the skill and determination of the doctors and nurses that had saved his life. In most other locations, and if they had been moments longer, the man simply would not have had enough spark of life left in him to save. If it could even be called consciousness, the light pierced the darkness he had known like a sword opening a water sack. The sudden deluge of light, even in the dim recovery room of the hospital, shocked his senses.

He lay there quiet for a moment and took in his surroundings, as much as he could understand at least. His final thoughts had been that he was dying, he had known he was, so now he was thoroughly confused to find himself lying on a soft surface and with light, absent dust and pain, filling him. His eyes like those of a newborn, still sore and fresh, gave him blurry vision as his green eyes took in what they could from where he lay. Minutes passed before he turned his head and saw a figure in the distance, man or woman or whatever it was, he could not tell. Feeling weak and knowing he was physically unable to resist any danger, The Wolf raised his hand, a signal he was awake. Whatever was going to happen might as well happen now, as long as he could stay conscious.

Atticus Wolf

Linarra’s head turned from her padd as soon as she could feel his mind wakening, slushing through the fog to consciousness. The Wolf thought he had been dying and was surprised to find out he hadn’t. Now he was alarmed that someone was there to harm him. What kind of a life had this man led? She slowly came closer and reached out to touch his hand. His hands were large and looked as if they had been used in more than a few scruffles in his day. She thought perhaps he was named correctly, a wolf indeed.
“I’m a doctor, No one is going to hurt you. You’re in the hospital but you’re going to be alright,” Linarra told him gently trying to reassure him. While she was close she checked his vitals and his breathing.

The figure had transformed into a woman as it had approached him, and through the blur that still existed he recognized the doctors clothing. Her hand took hold of his, and was warm and felt delicate to him after the rush of adrenaline from the ship. He couldn’t quite understand what she was saying, it was all still fuzzy to his ears and senses, but he could see her clearer now she had come close. His eyes rested on the woman and noted her smile, her strong and handsome features that beheld an underlying confidence and softness all at once that seemed at odds with the Klingon features of her slight ridges, and then she turned her eyes to him. They were dark and Atticus, even through his daze, recognized them instantly as a Betazoids eyes, even with the gold flecks that made him want to stare at them until he could no longer stay awake.

Things began to stir in his mind but he could not understand or place them yet. Betazoid meant telepathy, and he didn’t understand why something was screaming the word WALL in his subconscious over and over. He thought he should know this woman, although he knew he had never met her. For the moment, she offered safety in his weakened state, and as he looked at this eyes and felt the hand on his, Atticus was powerless to prevent unconsciousness take him again. Not the unconsciousness of injury, but this time of a deep sleep.

Atticus Wolf.

Linarra would protest later that she didn’t blush, and that hearing the man’s thoughts about her eyes hadn’t been flattering. She would say that she was flushed from fatigue but in the moment she allowed a soft smile to cross her full lips.
Rest and heal Linarra sent to him to complete the short communication they were having.
Wall…wall…,echoed over and over and so she slipped out of his mind. He was entitled to his privacy. Mr. Wolf was her patient and that didn’t give her the right to read his mind without permission. At least now he was calmer. Forgetting about the work on her padd Linarra stayed right there by his side holding his hand.

The sleep took him for hours, deep and undreaming as his body recovered and his mind reset to where it needed to be. Sometime the next morning, light again split the darkness as he awoke, in the same bed but no longer with the fog of injury, medication or stress to cover him and lead him back to sleep again. He awakened knowing he was in hospital this time remembering the woman, or thinking he did, not sure if he had been dreaming or not. His first urge, reaction really, was to sit up, but in his mind he knew what his injuries had been and he did not know how well they had been healed, or if they had at all.

He lay in bed for a few moments, mentally checking himself until he was satisfied he had everything he was supposed to, and then pushed himself up on his elbows slightly, testing his body and looking to see where exactly he was, his eyes searching the room, but his body revealing fatigue and stiffness he expected was due to his healed inuries, after all it was now obvious his bones were no longer broken, but the muscles around them were still weak without use and would take time to heal themselves from the damage, even with modern medicine. Quietly, he was pleased he was in such good shape, it would give his body the best chance of a fast recovery and was probably what had kept him alive in the wastes in the first place.

Atticus Wolf

The night had passed quickly for Linarra after that. The fact Mr. Wolf had regained consciousness for even a little while made his odds of making it significantly higher. She had fallen asleep writing up her report about the surgery and a kind but stern nurse had woken her and guided her to the barracks created for tired nurses and doctors who needed to crash after a long shift. She laid down on one of the beds and went back to sleep in seconds.
It wasn’t her nature to sleep past six in the morning so she woke up and showered, put on fresh clothes and brushed her hair and pulled it back in a braid. In her mind she kept hearing the Wolf’s thoughts about her eyes. Linarra know it was stupid but she had never really thought of her eyes as attractive. She took a deep breath and shook her head trying to center herself before she started the day. When she exited the barracks she went to check on their ship crash patient. Linarra walked to his room as she looked at the padd with his chart before looking at him.
“Good Morning Mr. Wolf. I’m doctor Riccio. I’m glad to see you’ve been recovering rather well,” she said professionally.
