A large, bearded man eyed Valkris and her companions up. His right eye had a patch over it with three small claw marks edging out, healed over by time and now faded. He rubbed his tongue across his teeth then leaned backwards. He seemed to struggle accepting Valkris’ statements. Slowly the head of the current operation looked to the nearest Black Sparrow member and spoke.“So, mind repeating to me again why I should take your word for this?”
Valkris growled, but reined in her temper. She knew he was playing stupid in hopes to resell the animals and pocket the money, pretending no one had arrived for them. It wasn’t going to happen. Her eyes glanced toward the obviously dug out section where the animals were kept. Their drugged growling and wandering in their cages echoed into the tunnels where they were drowned out by the howling wind. The only issue was that their ‘sellers’ were being stubborn about releasing their cargo after seeing the Black Sparrow crew follow behind her.
“You were sent a message about it from my employer. I have a copy of it and when the animals are loaded, you’ll get the rest of your payment,” She stated then pulled out a small device and passed it to him.
The man scowled as he took it and looked it over. Finally, he passed it back unharmed. He looked at the nearest Black Sparrow member then asked a question.
“How do you two know each other?”

Conrad was always ready in instances like this. He knew his part and he knew how to give it some flare as well. “She’s my first mate’s former lover. She needed a ship and obviously wanted the best one around. I’m sure you know of the Black Sparrow.” Of course, he played it off as though it had been a secret he cared nothing about. Kanok, situated by them both, made no inclination to either decline or confirm Conrad’s statement. Blankness was written on his face.
The Black Sparrow was surprisingly well known for its many odd jobs taken up. And Conrad was certainly a personality to remember, especially when it came to getting his own way. Was he a conman? No, certainly not! But if you decided to rig the game and deal him a bad hand, well…all was fair game after that.

The man looked Conrad up then down. After a few moments, he seemed to accept this and turned to his comrade. A short whispering conversation was held before the burly man nodded and talked down the tunnel. Seeing Valkris’ suspicious glance, he began to explain.
“Bart is just going ahead to make sure the crew has the animals ready. When he gets back, I’ll show you the cargo you’ll be hauling.”

Conrad sighed. Waiting. He was not fond of waiting, given that it typically left him idle and doing nothing. What was a man to do in such times? He started pacing and eyeing up the entrance rather absentmindedly. “How long do you think that will take?” he asked curiously as though he had somewhere else he had to be.

“I’m curious myself,” Valkris pipped up.
Her arms uncrossed and fell down to her sides, released from their resting position. She didn’t give the man time to reply when she continued.
“We don’t have all day here. My client is waiting for his animals and I know he doesn’t want anyone nosing around his ship.” She pointed out then tacked on.
” I rather not give security all the time in the world to check his credentials and find issues. It wouldn’t suit us or you. So let us help to make this faster.”
Valkris’ teeth gritted in resistance to anything the man was about to say.
He inhaled and snort, giving in to her words, “Fine.”
His thick hand gesture for the pair to follow him down the tunnel.
“Do as you’re told and stay out of trouble, or it will cost your client,” he grumbled.
