he governor’s office had been newly decorated and was filled with artifacts from Andoria. Some were personal, while others had been given to Renn in recognition of his contributions to his homeworld. The room was inviting to the eye, something he had hired a decorator to ensure. It was kept cool at sixteen degrees Celsius. Renn would have preferred it closer to zero, but that would have been horribly uncomfortable for the rest of his staff.

Renn was dressed in a fine gray suit, something suitable for his new station, with the fabric standing in sharp contrast against his pale skin. He stood before the window and, to anyone who did not know him, appeared to be looking out across the city. In reality, he was simply meditating. He was blind and could not look at anything, but his other senses more than compensated for the lack of sight, providing him with something similar to sonar, though with far greater fidelity. He was still not entirely sure how he had gone from a newly assigned engineer, to leading the terraforming project, and finally to governor, but somehow he had. He intended to honor the position the people of OED V had entrusted to him.

Rende grinned to herself as she rode the lift to the top floor of the government tower. She’d only spent brief time here and never on the restricted floors. She was grinning because this was the LAST assignment she would have ever thought Star Fleet would pull her out of retirement for. She’d come to love Oed though, and Eldorin and Tabris were very supportive. It was a new challenge and one that was more in line with Rende’s true heart.

The lift was open to the city and she took in the city scape as she raced up the floors. When it stopped, she turned and stepped through the doors and up to the receptionist’s desk. “Good mornin’ ta ye. I’m Rende Asam. The powers tha’ be have assigned me ta Oed as the Star Fleet Lt. Gov. I was hopin’ te make an appointment ta meet with the Goven’r.”

Capt. Asam, Lt. Governor

The receptionist smiled, “He is in and his calander is clear for today, you may go in now if you like” she said, Renn had an open door policy so long as he was avialiable he would be.

“Ah, thank ya very much. And what is yer name my dear?” Rende had always had the policy to know names. No one was invisible.

“My nam” she was interupted by a call. “Govener Renn’s office, how may I help you?” she asked waving Rende on.

After thanking the receptionist again, she moved to the massive oak doors that marked the office of the Governor of Oed V. She knocked smartly to announce herself. Even though the receptionist said to go on in, Rende had manners.

Capt. Asam, Lt. Governor

“Come” he timbered voice called from the window. He did not turn to face the woman who entered the room. He recognized his old friend, there was no hiding how she was from him. “Captain Rende, I can almost her your accent by the way you walk into the room” he said turning and closing the distance. “They convinced you to come back?” he asked.

Rende stepped into the room and took it in. Her eyes landed immediately on th’Renn. “Goven’r th’Renn.” She moved over closer, letting her foot falls tell where she was, though she knew he could tell on his own. She laughed. “Oh aye. No’ a hard sell really. I love servin’ and I’ve come ta love Oed. How did they convince ye ta give up terraforming and go inta politics?”

Capt. Asam, Lt. Governor

He smiled “im not entierly sure how to answer that,” he said opening his arms wide, for her to.step into his hug. “I opened my mouth in a public meeting and the next thing i know i win the election by a landslide.” He said smiling broadly.

Rende laughed as she stepped in and shared a tight hug with her friend. “That sounds right. So, shall we be moan our fate or get to work? If your office is in the same state as mine, I am drowning in what was left undone.”

Capt. Asam, Lt. Governor

Vaelir smiled broadly, then moved over to one of two sofa’s and a couple arm chairs that sat in the south west corner of the room, it would have over looked the ocean had it still been there. Instead the empty basin was filled with small grasses and other plants and things that had taken hold there. “Well the work can wait, come sit” he said his movements were beyond gracefull, they were almost hypnotic the way he seemed to drift over the ground. “Tell me about you, how is your family?” he asked.

She followed and sat down across from him. The furniture was very comfortable but not ostentatious. She looked out the window imagining how it might be in the next decade or so. “Well, Eldorin complained that taking this position meant he couldn’t run for the Director of Building and construction position,” she laughed. They both knew Eldorin would be amazing at it, but he would quickly get irritated of the paperwork and lack of hands on work. “He’s been helping out with Star Fleet while they are short handed. How, with the size of the contingent here I have no idea how they are short handed.”

“Tabris is wonderful. He’s still working for Star Fleet, but he’s been helping with the environmental modifications and energy upgrades for the complex and then the colony. He really likes it here, working with the people rather than over looking from space.” There was obvious pride in her voice when she spoke about her son.

Her heart picked up a little. “And the grandchildren are amazing. I’m going to miss all the time I get with them. I get to spoil them rotten and see them everyday. Julin starts school this year and is so excited he can’t stop talking about it. Mercona is afraid all her friends will be in different classes and is begging not to go this year. They are all in school now, so I guess it’s good I have something to do.”

Capt. Asam, Lt. Governor

He crossed his legs and listend, hearing about her family gave him great joy. “I should very much like to see them again” he said. “They are partly why I asked you to come back, you have a vested interest in making this a place they can grow in.” he said, “It will at least mean your heart is in the right place when you disagree with me.” he smiled, he had been working so much he had never made it back to andoria long enough to find mates. “Well that and to spoil your children and grandchildren, I was never able to have any of my own” he noted.

“Well there is always time, Vaelir. And they would love to see you again. We will have to have dinner together soon.” She chuckled, “Well at least when we argue, we will know we are enjoying it. Though the press might think we will kill each other.” Rende laughed more at the thought. She never had much use for ‘the press.’

Capt. Asam, Lt. Governor

He laughed, “I’m afraid the critizizm will come when I’m called upon to kill and wont” he said. “I am dreading that day,” he said looking her way, in was another reason he called her, he knew it would be a last resort for her, and could trust the call if she had to make it.

Rende snorted. “So that’s why you wanted me. You know I hate doing that.” She paused and considered him for a moment, “But it is a decision that I am able to make, and I’ll never suggest it unless I feel it is absolutely necessary.”

“Speaking of such things, you are going to need personal security. The governors of Oed have a nasty habit of being assassinated.”

Capt. Asam, Lt. Governor

He laughed, he supposed that’s true though just because he was a pacifist it did not mean he was weak or did not know how to defend himself. But she was correct he would need a body gaurd or two. “You are correct, do you have recomendations?”

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

“Several, but I think you should start by seeking out the General of the CCDA or the police force. Star Fleet could provide that, but I think it would be best if you looked at the colony first for such resources. Show your support and faith in them,” Rende recommended.

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

“Indeed” he said in his best vulcan way. “So now that you are here, what are you going to tackle fist?” he said, I’m hoping that we can increase the teraforming activites, I so miss snow” he noted, “A glacier or two would be welcome as well” he smiled, he knew that was a long way off.

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

“I think my first job is to make sure the new CO gets settled and then I want to have a long talk with CCDA about how we work together to be the most efficient for the colony,” Rende said. “The vegetation is amazing. Water is next? I read in the files something about a Vten gift that is helping the growth?”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

“If I’m honest I’m not sure I agree with the previous Governor on the decisison to use it” he noted the concern in his voice clear. “They say its extremists that are causing the problems here on OEd and that may be true” he said pausing to take a drink of water. “Would you like something to drink, I am sorry I did not offer when you came in” he appologized starting to stand.

Vaelir th’Renn

“Coffee if you have it. Water if not.”

Rende nodded slowly considering his words. “It seems risky, after so many years if hostility, but you can see the results.” She stared out the window at the passing sliders. “But I have been around long enough to know that whole cultures can change on a single moment. So far they have been peaceful.”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

Renn smiled and stood, moving over to a small drink station, he poured her a cup. “Black?” he asked “It’s a dark roast, bitter, but very good” he noted.

“Yes, thank you. I have a feeling, the stronger the better,” Rende commented. She could hear it in the music of his emotions.

Setting down her cup he sat back down across from her, corssed his legs and looked at her. “They are very cunning, I fear we are playing checkers and they are playing three dementional chess. Now they want a nursury here,” he paused, unsure what he wanted to say next.

Vaelir th’Renn

Rende took the cup and savored a long slow sip of the bitter rich liquid. She let the sip linger as she thought over what he said. Her mind immediately going to tactics. “Mmmm, I would have to say a strong no to that. If they are playing chess, what better way to convince a people to let in an invading force but to ask ‘what of the children?’” She let her mind play over the possibilities for a moment. “I can get the Star Fleet scientists to look for a suitable planet or moon. If their planet can’t be saved, they will have a world all their own already. The other thing to consider is many of the residents are not happy with the Vren being here. They tolerate it, but setting up a nursery for an entire species? There is a risk that some of the more forceful might try to damage the nursery and hurt the young. We can’t guarantee their safety, and I don’t want to put Oed at risk of retaliation.”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

“I agree” he said, “It’s just asking to dump fuel on a fire” he stood and walled across to the window again, he had never been good at sitting still long. “Have starfleet see if they can find a suitable plannet somewhere close. The entire race is going to need to be moved somewhere” he noted. “Have you had a chance to check out operations for starfleet here on OED yet? ” he asked.

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

“Briefly to speak to the officers still here. A lot of change over there. But I’ve been teaching classes there so I’m not completely unfamiliar. Here was my first stop to check Dasca’s records and then come see you. When we are done, I’ll be heading to the complex. You’ll be able to reach me there for the rest of the day, most likely,” Rende said.

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

Renn did not turn to look at her, “I’m going to forgo a starfleet gaurd if I can” he noted. “I would appricaite it though if you could vet, I’m going to let our military provide the protection butI want a personal non military bodygaurd or two.” he said, pausing “but there is something else”

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

“I think that would be best. Of course I’m sure Star Fleet will want to give me all kinds of security.” She grinned wickedly, which Renn couldn’t see. “I’ve never been an assassin, but I’ve taken out a few.” She turned to look at him, “What’s that?”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

He sat back down and took a drink off his water, this was not a light subject and nothing was certian ,but as a friend he wanted to give her a heads up so she could look good to her brass. “I’m going to recommend to the councile that we pettion the federation for full status to fully govern ourselves.” he noted

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

“Good. It’s about time. There is no reason for Star Fleet to oversee a colony. Oed is not a Star Fleet facility. Star Fleet had a facility on Oed. There is a huge difference.” Rende sat back. “So basically you are firing me.”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

“Well not rightaway , I thougth I would get you to take care of a few things first” he said with a small laugh. “I would expect startfleet would want to keep their facility given the shipyards and all. I don’t see that being an issue”

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

“And the training they get here. Especially at Sacred Heart alone, is invaluable to them. That would be a separate issue to discuss directly with Star Fleet and not the Federation itself. So what do you need me to do?” In all honesty Rende wouldn’t mind staying on as a civilian. Well, for awhile anyway. The next few months would tell out how that went.

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

Renn smiled. “Well I was hoping that you would navigate the off boarding with me and then, go back into retirement and join me as Lieutenant Governer. He took another sip off his water, oh how he missed home.

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

Rende laughed heartily. “I am always going back unto retirement. Maybe this time it will stick.” She lifted her drink and took a long sip. “When are we meeting with the cabinet. I haven’t met most of them.”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

“Sooner rather than later, ” he noted, “Lets try to get something on the books for next week, that is if your are availiable?” he shifted a little looking at his PaDD to see what his schedule looked like. “I’m open first day of the week, and the last, I expect it will be a long meeting”

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

Rende shook her head. “I have never understood how you manage to read a PaDD, Vaelir.” Her voice carried respect.

His antena twitched with amusement, as a smiled crossed his face. “Well I just visualize it” he said trying to maintain a straight face. He then chuckled, “It’s reading it to me but ultra high sonics that you can’t hear.”

“Let’s do it the first of the week. I have no schedule yet. A new CO is arriving from Star Fleet and I will need to meet with him, but he hasn’t arrived just yet.”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

“Let me know what you make of him” he said. “Now is there anything I can help you with?”
Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

Rende nodded, “I will. You will be the first one I call, unless I’m calling for a replacement.” She leaned her head back and stared at the ceiling. “Right now? Nothing I can think of. I haven’t been down to the Lt Gov’s office yet, so there might be things I need once I go through it all.”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor

“Well then, ” he said, “Have you eaten?” he asked. He was starving, “Thought maybe we could get something to eat before we both lose ourselves in the chaos,” he smirked. “We will likly be 15 meters from each other every day and only see eachother once a month”. There was so much work to do, he was no really joking about it. Sure they might run into eachother in the hall from time to time, but it would likly be brief.

Vaelir th’Renn
Govenor OED V

“I’m starving,” Rende laughed. “You know maybe we should block out lunch together at least once a week. At least two hours. Make sure we have time to meet that isn’t interupted.” She sipped her drink, “and not necessarily for work. But for our sanity.”

“So shall we order some administrative assistant to bring us food, or go out?”

Cmdre Asam, Lt. Governor
