Karilan slowly stood up and faced Eela directly. We go where we want to go… together. They leaned in slowly and their lips met Eela ‘s. But the physical contact was just a part of what they were starting to share. Far deeper than any touch or kiss, deeper than any telepathic link… the energy between them was a fundamental part of each of them. And it began to meld and shift into a single force… a singular drive to know one another. And it was into that drive that Karilan fell into with Eela right next to them.

Eela could have wept the moment Karilan kissed her and connected their energy with hers. This was the connection she craved but could rarely truly find. This unadulterated knowing of someone else brought about by setting everything else to the side and simply being. When she used the canar, much of the time Eela kept a piece of her shielding active, filtering out the extraneous lest it overwhelm the other other person who could feel things through her. She knew instinctively that she would never have to do so with Karilan, that between the two of them their connection and the blended energy was so strong that it created a protective bubble that kept out everything else they didn’t need or want.

How beautiful.

Karilan ‘s energy didn’t support Eela ‘s, nor the other way around. Instead it was as if their entwined, combined energies evolved; a whole becoming far, far more than the sum of its parts. Karilan, for the first time in their life, just was. There were no dynamics of give and take… hers and theirs… no boundaries or separations. The two didn’t become one… they became them.

The slightly tipsy Eela who arrived for what a friend at the Academy dubbed a ‘booty call’, had vanished, calmed and enhanced by the Eela that had been sitting deeper down waiting till it was truly safe to come out. As Karilan removed her dress and her brace, and she in turn removed Karilan’s robe, the physical need for pleasure and satisfaction had faded, no, morphed, into a desire to wrap herself up in this blended energy they were creating. And this was so much more tender and satisfying and grounding than anything she had experienced before. Here she was in her sixth decade of life and Eela was having a first. There weren’t all that many ‘firsts’ for her anymore- certainly not when it came to intimacy- but that was the reality of how her life had unfolded and the ways she had learned to hide herself.

The Eela in their mixed energy was irrepressibly enthusiastic, and compassionate (not just to others but to herself in this moment with Karilan too). There was the heady experience of rituals and knowledge and the way that a person could savour the processing of learning. And oh how she savoured this, savoured the lack of edges between her and Karilan. For the first time in her adult life, Eela felt truly herself. No canar needed, no ritual. This was the ritual.

Time passed in a haze she cared not to examine and when at last fatigue crept into her awareness, Eela turned to lay on her stomach, head turned to face Karilan’s beautiful face and draped her arm over the person who claimed her hear tin a way she could never have imagined. Hand still connected to them, she needed no spoken words to convey everything on my mind and in her heart.

Karilan dozed slightly, but was still awake enough to look at Eela. “I have never known anything like that. I… I am a little dizzy. I’m still not sure where I end and you begin.” They smiled at Eela and said “And if I am being completely honest… I don’t care to know. I feel… I don’t know…” and they set their hand on hers. “Whole.”

Her smile was radiant, lit up from deep inside. “Oh do alenn sunai ko murkailen,” she said softly in her native dialect of Dinaye, an older dialect of the main Haliian language known as Liada. “And through you I bleed colour.” She let that saying wash over them as she imagined a bubble filled with their energy that swirled with colours. My Sutanna, Eela thought to Karilan, using her pet name for Karilan. My aurora.

Eela shifted onto her side and drew the covers over them. “There are ancient stories on Halii about the special bonds touch telepaths could forge. For thousands of years, this has been our gift. It is also the thing that the canar brings to the surface, the tangible aspect so many Haliians, including myself, are seeking. Lan, I have tried to find this feeling my whole life, and I’ve come very close a few times. This is the first time it has truly happened, and there was no canar involved either.” She shifted herself closer, still leaving some space, but close enough that her arm could drape over Karilan’s body, her fingertips caressing her lover’s back. Karilan now understood what it meant to be Haliian and that the connection she craved, and needed for her mental , physical, emotional and spiritual health, stemmed from something fundamental in her biology that sought this beautiful and exquisite entanglement with another being.
