Alston stepped off the secure transporter pad from the Government Tower into the CIA Headquarters. While he didn’t mind walking or taking a slider back and forth, time was of the essence here. And one of the perks of being Director, access to the secure transporter network. For now though, there were questions to ask, and hopefully get some answers out of what they were able to find out from their suspect. As he passed through the CIA control center, he stepped into his office, and tapped the secure communications terminal.
=^=Mr. Reilly, would you please join me in my office.=^=
- Mace
=/\= On my way. =/\= came a reply after a few seconds. It took the Deputy Director a little more than five minutes to arrive, but he did and walked into the office, allowing the door to slide close behind him. “Director.” he said with a half-grin, knowing that Mace had little use for titles. He took a seat in front of the desk and said “You know, when I came into the office this morning I said to myself it had been too quiet lately.” and he chuckled. It had, in fact, been anything but quiet.
Reilly- Deputy Director, CIA
“Ah, so you are the one I can blame for today,” Alston said as he hit a button on the desk and secured the office. “I really do hate that phrase, because something generally explodes.
“Did you find out anything else from our ‘guest’.”
Coming around the desk he sat down on the front edge. He made a mental note that he needed to do some rearranging. He always hated the brass lording over the peons from behind a big desk, so he wasn’t about to get into that habit.
- Mace
Being struck by an idea, Mace spun the terminal on his desks around and since he was now back in HQ, he was curious to see if there was anything else about Devray Technologies and Thurston Kennick in their classified database.
- Mace
The buzzer on his desk sounded, reaching over Alston opened the comm channel.
=^= Director, we have the files you requested on Kennick and Devray Technologies.=^=
=^= Understood. Let’s see what you have. =^=
Keying the security systems, he release the lock on his office and let the door open. There was something about being handed the data that Alston still liked. Plus while networks were supposed to be secure, his teams wouldn’t have a job if that was really true. Some things were best to have plausible deniability on who actually saw the information.
“Sir, this is what we were able to pull from the classified database so far,” the analyst who walked in said as he handed over a PADD.”
Alston nodded as he took the PADD. As the analyst left he secured the room again and started flipping through it.
“So, any more connections to Devray that you were able to get out of our guest?” he asked looking up at Mr. Reilly.
- Mace
Reilly would have discovered that Tokerl received a large sum of latinum transferred from a shell company a week before arrival that can eventually be traced through a series of companies until the source shows it was a suspected Orion Syndicate front on the colony, a business in the Plaza Exchange’s seedier side called Qaro’s Market, which sells various goods, some legit, but there has been suspected black market activity they haven’t caught yet. One of the two names on the ownership documents is Sistin, the Syndicate middleman that hired Tokerl. Surveillance has caught Roland Cavanagh entering the shop on several occasions in recent months. (Cavanagh is the mid-level technician who gave Tokerl the Devray Tech device that granted him access to Dash’s apartment).
As for Kennick and Devray, on the surface, everything looked legit. But anecdotal reports about the CEO himself said that Thurston Kennick is rich and greedy for more money and power. His company’s movement from R&D into manufacturing of tech had been escalating and they had been tossing their name into consideration for different contracts on Oed. His nomination for Lt. Governor was by Federation Councillor Gregson Clarke, who was the representative on the Federation Council for Alpha Centauri. Clarke historically had no issue stirring up contentious issues on the Council and was noted to have grumbled about the statement Hyrushi and Dasca sent to the Council.
Just then, both their comms chirped with a classified message to the MCD group running the case. It came from the Oed Police Forensics technician, Aliana Ripkiz (whom they had interacted with earlier). She had traced the blackmail messages (https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf6/oedv/posts/242693/) with some difficulty but found that the original origin point was Devray Technologies HQ. She had the computer ID, but couldn’t narrow it down farther than a terminal inside the building.

Reilly pursed his lips and then took a deep breath through his nose. “Well… I don’t know about you, but even circumstantial evidence is still evidence. It’s certainly not enough to go after Kennick directly… but I’d be inclined to think it’s justification to at least conduct a covert investigation. And we just happen to have a new computer hac-… er… analyst… who I have no doubt can get into that system and find us anything that can be found.”

Mace held up a hand towards Reilly, “If you wanted someone that played by the books, you wouldn’t have dragged me out of retirement. I know what work the people here are doing.
“I think the real question is, has the Governor established a line on what we can and can’t do? Or should I say, theoretically, how likely are we to have to justify an investigation in front of a court?”
- Mace
Reilly shrugged slightly and said ” Well see that’s the thing… we are so new right now that we don’t really have any presedence for what we are allowed to do. And we don’t really report to anyone except the governor. And we both know he wants the responsible party dealt with in some form or fashion.” He looked directly at Mace and then said ” And it would be a hell of a lot easier to tip off the police if we knew exactly where to tell them to look and what to look for.” He gave Mace the kind of smile that only those who spent more time in shadow than in sun could give. “And I’m sure after we find it, some anonymous whistleblower’s conscious will get to them and they’ll tip them off. I mean, it’s not like we would have any part of it after all… right?”
