Pangolin sat behind his desk, fingers interlocked as he stared at the small holographic display. They needed just a little more information, information he couldn’t access. So far this had been the first truly productive cross-agency investigation, so he was spending more time waiting for his counterparts to gather more evidence. He didn’t doubt that he could find much of what his colleagues did; it was how he was trained. But the school of Joseph Karlson didn’t put much stock in being able to prove cases before a Federation Court. That way of working had been effective, especially during the more volatile years on Oed but the shift to a more cooperative atmosphere with the new agencies and the hostile manner in which the government was handling relations with the Federation proper meant a new era. No more shortcuts, no more blackmailing criminals into behaving, no more hanging would-be assassins from the top of the hospital, no more taking part in illegal raids against Klingon diplomats and helping in replacing a Klingon High Lord. He sighed wistfully.

The old man had run the police on a simple philosophy: as long as Civilians weren’t harmed, it was fair game. And at times it had been a game. It had been nearly a decade since he’d seen the old man let loose, and he was hoping it didn’t happen again anytime soon.
