The PR Director shrugged. “Nothing overly surprising. Many colonial worlds are banding back and forth on whether or not they would allow their people to be put in this position. The council is strongly expressing that they are Federation colonies and subject to the council. The diplomatic corp just keeps expressing how delicate negotiations and along with official first contacts are.”

Jeanette gave a soft snort. “So the usual and expected, okay. I am expecting to be called into a meeting with the Vren in the next few days as we sort of get our feet under us again. I need to know even the tiniest glimmers of dissent or uncertainty. Maybe we as a group can address them in small ways that will make things move along more smoothly.” Or at least it was her hope. Then again, being hopefully was really a huge part of her job. After all, you couldn’t be there to negotiate peacefully unless you had some hope it would go well.

Revna was diplomatic until it was time not to be. “What would help a lot is if we could make an official announcement that the murderer was caught and we can truthfully say they had no connection to the Vren. The longer it takes to find the person responsible, that more rumors are going to circulate and create a false truth for people to manipulate.”

“Yes,” that would help a great deal,” Jeanette said, though her tone was almost flat. “Obviously I can’t be kept in the details of the loop, but I do know the investigation is moving along. When they have something to tell me, I’ll know.” Her shoulders sagged ever so slightly as she watched the screen. Knowing the who and why would help so many things but Mathis was not so naive to think it would bring her closure. Not in the way it might for others.

“Well we shall not wait around for fate, but make our own, hmm?” Revna said. It would not bring closure, but it would make Mathis’ job easier.

Mathis sighed. “It’s not so simple. I can’t just go around demanding people tell me things. Everything is too precarious right now. But I’ll take suggestions.”

Revna shook her head. “No, we must wait for the authorities, but we can shape the next few days with the Vren. I think it would be good for you and Ambassador Kek to be seen together sooner rather than later.” The PR Director agreed, “The sooner you are both seen together, even unofficially, the more control we have of the narrative.”

Jeanette rubbed her lower lip with the side of her fingers before she broke into a genuine smile. “We’re all supposed to be meeting later this week, but you’re right, a preemptive and casual appearance would help a lot of issues. I like it. I’ll contact Kek and see how he feels about it. Maybe a stroll through Sloan Square and some of the commercial areas would be good.” In fact, her mind was already creating a scenario where they could genuinely talk about cultural differences and similarities.

“Just tell us what you need, Ambassador. We’ll get it done,” the PR manager said. Revna turned to her. “Would you like to greet the new hires before you contact Ambassador Kek? They are getting a tour with security at the moment.”

Jeanette offered a warm smile. “You know, that sounds perfect.” The people who worked these halls were going to be part of something rather amazing- history in the making. It was important that they all knew what she was about and that she was here to support them just as mush as they were here to support and her work.

Revna nodded and turned leaving the room. She didn’t hesitate as she walked. Without checking she led Jeannette straight to the group of new hires getting a tour from the head of security. They came up behind the group. When he finished speaking she cleared her throat softly, but the sound carried with firm authority. The group turned. “Forgive us for interrupting, Captain. Ambassador Mathis wanted to greet the new staff.”

Jeanette took in the group and despite her fatigue and deep grief, she broke into a warm smile. “I won’t take up much of your time, but I think it’s important for you to all know how much I appreciate your presence here. The work we are beginning together is history making here on Oed. And certainly in my long career this is a particular first for me. I’ve run embassies before, but I’ve never created one from the ground up. And thus we have a wonderful opportunity to make it exactly what Oed needs, rather that what others believe Oed needs.”

She took a steadying breath. “I’m not going to deny that this is an incredibly difficult time for myself and my family. But like I said yesterday at the memorial, Dash was very invested in this work. He believed in it wholeheartedly. And so I can think of nothing that would honour his memory more than delving into the work of building bridges with both Oed and the Vren with optimism and hope.”

“If you have questions or concerns, I invite you to bring them up at our regular meeting, or come see me if you prefer. I welcome input and discussion. That is all I have and I will let you get back to your tour.” It felt good to say what she needed to, to let them know they were a part of a new team and that they would decide how it went.
